He performed the band’s famous You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul, and made up new lyrics at the end of the song.
“You’re my heart, you’re my soul/ That’s only thing I really know/ All over the world, and in Viet Nam/ And especially in Ha Noi/ You, all the people here/ Stay in my heart.”
It’s no doubt that the new lyrics won people over, as the 4,000 audience members stood up and applauded.
The single rocketed him and former bandmate Dieter Bohlen to remarkable success in early 1985. Now, Anders performed it in an “unplugged” style, accompanied by guitarist Lars Ilmer.
Anders explained that audiences everywhere always want him to sing You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul, and he had sung that song for 32 years. “I try to make it fresher by refreshing my style or with modern mixing,” he told Viet Nam News at a press conference before the show.
Over the course of two hours, Anders performed the band’s other hits, including You Can Win If You Want, Cheri, Cheri Lady, Brother Louie, Geronimo’s Cadillac, and Atlantis Is Calling.
These songs are familiar to Vietnamese audiences in the 1980s. Though the band broke up in 2003, Modern Talking with two members Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen and their hits always live in people’s hearts as a memory of youth.
Trung Hieu, a 42-year-old audience, even brought a poster of Modern Talking to the concert, and luckily got Anders’s autograph.
“I was bursting with happiness seeing Anders in the flesh,” he said. “He was my idol when I was young. His songs always remind me of my youth because they were an integral part of parties, meetings, and weddings at that time.”
Modern Talking – Thomas Anders Live in Concert, brought to Viet Nam by IB Group and VPBank, took place at the National Convention Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
Anders was born in 1963. The German singer, composer, and record producer is dubbed as The Gentleman of Music. Beside disco, he also performed pop/dance and funky songs like Why Do You Cry, Stay with Me, This Time and Give me Peace on Earth.
