A local rescue team discovered his body at the Lao Phao Waterfall on Sunday after more than a week of searching, Hoang Van Duy, chairman of the People’s Committee of Phan Dung Commune, told Zing online newspaper.

Kien, was reportedly missing while he was trekking the Ta Nang-Phan Dung route in the province with six companions.

After leading the trekking group in exploring the Ta Nang-Phan Dung route on May 11, he was reported missing by noon of May 12 when the group stopped for a break at an area near the border between Lam Dong Province and Binh Thuan Province.

Nearly 100 members of the local rescue team as well as police dogs were mobilised to look for Kien and his trekking mates.

The 50km-long Ta Nang-Phan Dung route, stretching over the provinces of Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan and Lam Dong, is believed to be the best route for trekking in Vietnam.

However, it is also considered dangerous for backpackers to trek the route without guides.
