VietNamNet Bridge - Artist Vu Kim Thu has opened her new exhibition titled “Space Minimization” in the lobby of the French Cultural Center, 24 Trang Tien, Hanoi.

Thu used Vietnamese paper – the “xuyen chi” paper and washi paper (a traditional Japanese paper) to create 3D maps featuring Hanoi.

These small sculptures are the contrast of the peaceful scenery of the mountains, rivers in the countryside where she has recently participated in the camp with the dynamic of Hanoi with automobiles and unrest movement.

After attending an art workshop in Japan in August 2012, Thu learned more about Japanese traditional washi paper. With the observation of an artist, she has begun making new artworks with the Japanese traditional washi paper and Vietnam’s xuyen chi paper.

Washi paper is a type of paper made from the bark of one of three types of kozo (mulberry), Mitsumata and gampi trees. As of 2008, over 300 families in Japan produced this kind of paper.

The xuyen chi paper is mainly used in calligraphy, originating from China, similar to the do paper.

The exhibition lasts until 18/3.
