The mid-tier smartphone market heats up



Oppo launched its F7 series priced at VND8-10 million and nearly 19,000 were sold just the first day. 

In late April, Xiaomi broke its record when selling 20,000 Redmi 5 Plus on the launch day. 

About 5,000 Nova 3e of Huawei, priced at VND7 million, were sold on the launch day April 8. The manufacturer hopes it can sell 20,000-30,000 products a month, from now to August.

The smartphone market was boiling in March and April when manufacturers rushed to sell mid-end products and apply attractive sale policies.

Also in April 2018, HMD Global launched Nokia 6 and Nokia 7 with the selling prices of VND7 million and VND9 million, respectively. Equipped with new technologies and beautiful design, the two models have caught the attention of Vietnamese who were loyal to the once-famous brand.

Nokia plans to sell 500,000 products this year.

Observers said the mid-end models with fingerprint sensor, dual camera, Always-on display with beautiful design, high configuration and many features are the favorite in Vietnam now. 

According to GfK, a market analysis firm, smartphones priced at VND5-10 million amount to 34 percent of the smartphone market.

Dang Thanh Phong of The Gioi Di Dong, the largest mobile phone distribution chain, said the best sellers are models from VND5-6 million to less than VND10 million. 

Most manufacturers target the market segment and introduce models targeting youth and office workers. Samsung has J7+ and J7 Pro, while Apple has iPhone 6 and Oppo has six models in the market segment. Sony, HTC, Vivo, Huawei and Nokia also have products available in the market.

Do Quang Kha, CEO of Oppo Vietnam, said artificial intelligence (AI) is an important feature to buy smartphone products.

“They may not understand what AI means, but they will choose products which best understand them and serve as clever assistants,” he said, adding that the phones which can turn off unused functions, thus helping prolong battery life, or phones with cameras which know users’ habits and can take beautiful selfies will be the most popular choices.

Upon its return, Nokia decided to cooperate with The Gioi Di Dong, Google, Qualcomm and Home Credit to offer Nokia 6 and Nokia 7 Plus, the phones made with the most advanced technology.

The two products of Nokia are now available at 1,800 The Gioi Di Dong shops. It is estimated that 500,000 products will be sold in 2018.
