In the letter addressed to his parents, Duy dreamt of becoming a superhero named S-24/7 in order to fight with a devil-god representing traffic accidents.
Duy’s S-24/7 superhero boasts many special abilities, including shapeshifting, faster-than-light travel, and thought manipulation. But the most valuable thing about S-24/7 is his unconditional love for all things throughout the universe.
According to the writer, the idea from the letter comes from everyday situations Duy typically sees from his house near a national highway. The boy has seen the numerous problems traffic cause in a neighborhood, including plenty of horrific accidents.
This year’s theme for the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People aged nine to 15 was to imagine oneself as a superhero, with the mission of making all roads around the world safer for children.
Out of the millions of letters sent from around the world, organisers selected only three to win prizes.
Last year, ninth grader Nguyen Binh Nguyen of Nguyen Tri Phuong secondary school in Hanoi won first prize of the contest at the national level, as well as a consolation prize at the international level.
