In the 50kg category, Tam faced off against seed No.1 Yokubova Aziza of Uzbekistan in the quarter-final stage. After the two first sets, the Vietnamese athlete held her rival to a draw, with the final seeing Tam show great determination and effective attacking tactics, enabling her to defeat Yokubova Aziza with a score of 5-0.

Moving forward, Tam will take on No.3 seed Kang Do Yeon of the Republic of Korea who beat host boxer Silina to progress to the semi-final stage.

Tam is one of the best female boxers in the nation, with the former Asian champion being the first Vietnamese woman to earn a place at the Olympics.

In the world championship in 2019, Tam advanced to the semi-final stage after beating Liliya Aetbaeva of Russia, bringing home Vietnam's first silver medal. However, the host athlete complained to organisers who later overturned the announced result, kicking Tam out of the event.
