VietNamNet Bridge – FIDE Grand Prix 2012 champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov outplayed top Vietnamese talent Le Quang Liem at the on-going Aeroflot Open final in Moscow on February 16.
Holding white pieces in the first leg game, Vietnam’s international grandmaster who defeated two Russian players in the qualifying round to enter the finale, was held to a draw against Mamedyarov after 33 moves.
In the second game of Round 16, Mamedyarov took advantage of holding white pieces, launching a pressing tactic and forcing his rival to surrender after the 25th move.
Mamedyarov is one of the eight players invited to the final round. He did not compete in the qualifying round.
Failure meant Liem said farewell to the tournament’s final round which has seen the participation of 32 players and eight inviting players.
Another inviting player, former world champion Anatoly Karpov, and Russian champion Dmitry Andreikin also did not advance to Round 8.
Final games will take place on February 17.
