VietNamNet Bridge – During exam time at universities many landlords opportunistically increase their fees for accommodation because of high demand from students.
12 students stay in a 10 square metre room. |
Thousands of students from other provinces and cities flock to the capital for their exams, most of them on very limited incomes, all looking for a place to stay.
Homeowners in the areas near universities often lease out their homes to students to earn extra money, some of them even sleeping on their own sofas so as to be able to accommodate more temporary renters.
One homeowner even said that she went to relatives houses so that she could lease out her own residence.
Cost for a private 25 square metre room is VND5 million for three days. |
Son, one such homeowner said, "If the students want to live with roommates the fee is VND170,000 per person (USD8). For a private room with a bathroom and air conditioning it would cost VND5 million for three days. I could lease out a 25 square metre room to at least 12 people. I think the price is reasonable."
He added that students hoping to stay at his residence should act quickly, as space is running out.
Many of the rooms for rent are quite bleak, with more than ten people sleeping on the floor and no windows.
When asked about such living conditions Son became angry and said, "This is normal. It happens every year. I challenge you to find a place cleaner than mine!"
