Bohee, a tourist from South Korea, found herself sweating it out as she navigated narrow alleys and climbed several flights of stairs to reach a renowned egg coffee shop in Hanoi.
During her recent trip to Vietnam, Bohee explored several destinations, including Hanoi, Sa Pa (Lao Cai), and Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa). Having visited Da Nang five times before, captivated by the local scenery and cuisine, Bohee and her boyfriend Jo decided to explore new, exciting destinations in Vietnam, starting with Hanoi.
Bohee was particularly eager to try two dishes in the capital: pho and egg coffee. A self-proclaimed coffee lover, she makes it a point to drink two cups daily whenever she visits Vietnam.
"I love the taste of Vietnamese coffee, so I always seek out the best coffee shops to enjoy it whenever I travel here," Bohee said.
However, her quest for the famous egg coffee turned into quite an adventure. The café, located on the second floor of an old building on Hang Bac Street, Hoan Kiem District, was not easy to find.
Despite standing just a few meters from the alley leading to the shop, Bohee spent nearly 15 minutes searching for the entrance. She was surprised to find that she had to squeeze through a narrow alley, barely wide enough for one person, and then climb several steep staircases to reach the café.
"I got lost trying to find this café. It’s truly a hidden gem," she remarked.
Once inside, the couple ordered two iced milk coffees and one egg coffee. Bohee had read that the café was popular among foreign visitors.
After a short wait, their coffee arrived. Bohee, excited to finally taste the famous egg coffee, eagerly took her first sip.
"Look, the egg coffee is served in a hot water bowl—quite impressive. The addition of cocoa powder seems to make the coffee flavor even richer," she observed.
Bohee praised the creamy blend of egg and coffee, which was thick, rich, and aromatic. However, she wasn’t fond of the coconut biscuit served with the coffee, finding it too hard.
According to Bohee, the café’s space was somewhat cramped, leading to a bit of discomfort as she could hear multiple languages and sounds from the surrounding patrons. Despite this, she was pleased to have finally tasted the famous egg coffee.
In addition to egg coffee, the couple enjoyed other Hanoi delicacies, such as beef pho, lemon tea, and grilled beef pan dishes, while exploring Hoan Kiem Lake and experiencing street portrait painting.
After a few days of fun in Hanoi, Bohee and her boyfriend headed to Sa Pa and then to Nha Trang. She admitted that this trip to Vietnam was even more enjoyable than her previous ones, as she experienced a wide range of activities from the North to the South.
