SEA Games women’s team winner Phuong will compete in the women’s individual kata (forms) event against 42 other martial artists from 27 countries and territories.
Phuong is currently No 28 in the world. She is seeking a berth at the Tokyo Olympics and the Dubai event is one of the qualifiers which will deliver points to participants.
Karate will make its first appearance on the 2020 Games programme, with men and women competing in kata and kumite (sparring) events at the Nippon Budokan. — VNS
