VietNamNet Bridge - Junior colleges fear they may not find enough students this year, even though the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has allowed them to enroll students based on high-school marks.

Junior colleges began receiving applications 10 days ago, and the modest number of applications so far has caused concerns.

The Vien Dong Junior College has reportedly received 700 applications as of August 6, small compared to previous years, according to Vien Dong’s Headmaster Tran Thanh Hai.

Under the new regulation, students who finish high school are eligible for applying for studying at junior colleges. This means that junior colleges will have more students to enroll. However, schools fear they cannot attract students.

Tran Manh Thanh, deputy headmaster of Bach Viet Junior College, said by August 4 midday, the school had received 600 applications.

Even the students who got a 15 score from the national high-school finals, who are eligible for universities, have also registered to study at junior college. 

Many students and parents appear to be uninterested in tuition levels.

Meanwhile, Dai Viet Sai Gon Junior College has received 1,000 applications so far. Le Lam, the headmaster of the school, also said that applications came from students who can satisfy requirements at universities.

Being a prestigious school, the HCMC Industry & Trade Junior College receives tens of thousands of application each year. However, the number of applications has been modest this year with 3,000 applications by August 4.

According to Nguyen Van Tho, deputy headmaster of the Construction Junior College No 2 in HCMC, by August 4, it had received 720 applications. These include 300 students applying with their high school reports and others with national high-school final exam scores.

The school reports show that student quality this year is better than last year. In theory, students can apply to many junior colleges and universities with their school reports.

Nguyen Thi Ly, headmaster of Thu Duc Junior College of Technology, said the school has received 1,005 applications. 

However, she said that though some students apply to junior colleges, they actually want to go to university. If they canot enter university, they are willing to accept junior colleges as an alternative.
