Mr Nguyen Van Long in his VND1 billion original orchid garden
The owner of the VND1 billion original orchid garden is Nguyen Van Long from Thach Tan commune in Ha Tinh province.
Long has been an orchid lover since his school days. After graduating from Da Nang University, he did not stay in the city like his friends, but decided to return to his home village, where he started a business by growing wild orchids.
“In fact, I began collecting wild orchid species and growing orchids when I was a schoolboy. The orchids grew well and had very beautiful flowers. One day, a friend of mine came and said he wanted to buy some orchids. And I began thinking about developing an orchid garden for sale,” Long said.
In 2015, Long borrowed VND200 million from relatives and friends to start the orchid garden project.
At first, he encountered difficulties due to lack of knowledge and technique. The orchids withered or rotted after a short time. After he searched for information on the internet, consulted with friends, and visited other orchid gardens, he was able to solve the problems.

Finally, he became a ‘master’ in growing orchids. He can multiply rare and precious species and regulate blossoming as wanted. In general, orchids will bloom after two or three years of growing.
Now Long has a large 300 sq meter garden with 2,000 orchids. There is a two-layer frame, about two meters above the earth’s surface, covered with a net to shield orchids from the baking sun.
Long’s main purpose in developing the orchid garden is to discover and propagate rare and precious species. However, he had limited capital and had to postpone the plan for some time.
After getting more money, he returned to his garden to grow wild orchids.
“My garden has rare and precious wild orchids from all over the country,” he said.
Wild orchids grow well on star apple and jackfruit trees, and they bloom only once year. The value of each orchid species depends on the flowers’ beauty and rarity. Mutant flowers are the most valuable.
“I am planning to expand my garden and carry out the propagation myself to reduce the production cost,” he said, adding that imports are too expensive for collectors of common orchids.
