The IRONMAN triathlon, a world famous competition of running, swimming and bike riding, will make its Vietnam debut in the central coastal city of Da Nang on May 10, 2015 under the name ‘VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam’.
The event will be co-organised by IRONMAN in partnership with Sunrise Events, the Philippines’ leading sporting event company, with VNG Corporation as sponsor.
“The growth of the sport in the Asia-Pacific region in the last few years has been extraordinary,” said IRONMAN Asia-Pacific CEO, Geoff Meyer. “We are delighted to add another race to the IRONMAN calendar in such a spectacular destination.”
Considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events, the IRONMAN triathlon was first held in Hawaii in 1978, consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run, raced in that order and without a break.
Since the inception of the IRONMAN® brand in 1978, IRONMAN has grown from a single race to a global sensation with more than 190 events across five unique brands: IRONMAN®, IRONMAN® 70.3®, 5150™ Triathlon Series, Iron Girl® and IRONKIDS®.
For its debut in Vietnam, the competition will be held under the brand IRONMAN 70.3, meaning the half distance of a full IRONMAN, consisting of a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run.
All people can register to participate in the VNG IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam as an ‘individual’ or ‘relay group’. Detailed information is available at http://www.ironman.com or http://ironman703vietnam.com.
