The race in the foldable smartphone market is heating up as rumors about Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone - tentatively dubbed the iPhone Fold - continue to surface, hinting at premium materials and cutting-edge design.

Liquid metal hinge: Apple's secret weapon?

Recent reports from China suggest that Apple will use metallic glass, also known as amorphous metal or liquid metal, in the hinge mechanism of the iPhone Fold.

This aligns with earlier predictions by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who noted Apple’s interest in the material for improving durability and reducing screen creases.

Unlike conventional metals, metallic glass has a disordered atomic structure, making it significantly more resistant to bending, deformation, and denting. It's also known for its high strength - 2.5 times stronger than titanium alloys - and its mirror-like finish that mimics stainless steel.

The benefits of using metallic glass for the iPhone Fold’s hinge include:

Enhanced resistance to wear and tear during repeated folding

Reduced crease visibility over time

Better corrosion resistance in varying environments

Smoother, scratch-resistant surface for a premium feel

Given that the hinge endures the most stress in a foldable smartphone, Apple’s choice of this robust material could be key to extending the device’s lifespan and ensuring a consistently flat display.

Apple previously used liquid metal in smaller components like SIM ejector tools, but this marks the first time the company is applying the material to a major mechanical component.

iPhone Fold design and specifications

According to leaks, the iPhone Fold will feature a 7.8-inch main display when unfolded and a 5.5-inch external screen. Its book-style design will resemble the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series rather than the clamshell format of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Expected features include a dual-lens rear camera, a single front camera, and Touch ID integrated into the power button. The foldable iPhone is rumored to be incredibly thin, measuring just 4.5mm when open (even slimmer than the anticipated iPhone 17 Air at 5.5mm), and 9–9.5mm when folded.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the iPhone Fold will retail for around $2,000, with a potential launch date in 2026.

Apple is also reportedly working on an 18.8-inch foldable device, possibly an iPad or MacBook, expected by 2027.

What’s next for Apple fans?

While the iPhone Fold remains under wraps, Apple enthusiasts are already gearing up for the iPhone 17 series, slated for release this September. The lineup may include:

iPhone 17

iPhone 17 Pro

iPhone 17 Pro Max

iPhone 17 Air (ultra-thin)

These models are expected to bring significant upgrades, particularly to the Pro versions.
