Apple is rumored to be launching the iPhone 17 Ultra, which could either replace the Pro Max line or introduce an entirely new premium tier above it.

For several years, reports have suggested that Apple has considered an "Ultra" model to either supersede the Pro Max series or establish a distinct category within its product hierarchy.

Prior to the iPhone 15 launch, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman speculated that Apple might rename the Pro Max model as Ultra, but this did not happen. The rumor resurfaced with the iPhone 16 cycle, with some predicting the Ultra model would debut alongside the Pro and Pro Max variants. However, this too did not materialize. Now, the iPhone 17 lineup leaks have reignited speculation.

Apple’s 2025 flagship model, currently referred to as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, is expected to receive major upgrades. According to South Korean insider "yeux1122" on Naver, who compiled leaks from Weibo, investment reports, and supply chain trends, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may be rebranded as the iPhone 17 Ultra.

Exclusive upgrades rumored for iPhone 17 Ultra

Earlier reports suggested that both iPhone 17 Pro models would feature a smaller Dynamic Island, but recent leaks have disputed this claim.

According to "yeux1122," only the iPhone 17 Ultra will feature a smaller Dynamic Island. Component supply chain leaks indicate Apple has ordered a limited number of smaller Dynamic Islands, suggesting that only one model - not both Pro versions - will include this change.

Additionally, "yeux1122" claims that only the Ultra model will feature a vapor chamber cooling system - a feature that was initially rumored for both Pro models or even the entire iPhone 17 lineup.

The iPhone 17 Ultra is also expected to be thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro, housing a larger battery. This marks the first exclusive design change for the Ultra model, setting it apart from other iPhone 17 variants.

Beyond these three key upgrades, other rumored features could further differentiate the iPhone 17 Ultra. Initially, MacRumors reported that only the iPhone 17 Pro Max would have 12GB of RAM, but later leaks suggested both Pro models would receive this upgrade. Similarly, early reports claimed only the 17 Pro Max would feature a 48MP periscope camera, but subsequent leaks indicated both Pro models would share a triple 48MP rear camera system.

Apple’s new naming strategy for iPhones

"Yeux1122" also speculates that Apple is revamping its iPhone naming conventions. The Plus variant may be discontinued, replaced by a thinner iPhone 17 Air. Meanwhile, Apple recently expanded the iPhone 16 lineup by adding the iPhone 16e, which was previously rumored to be the iPhone SE 4.

Adding an Ultra variant could help Apple further distinguish between its top-tier iPhones, justifying a higher price tag for the Ultra model with exclusive premium features.

If these rumors hold true, the iPhone 17 lineup could consist of:

iPhone 17

iPhone 17 Air

iPhone 17 Pro

iPhone 17 Ultra

Apple’s evolving product naming strategy

Apple has long established a tiered naming structure across its product lines, including "Air," "Pro," and "Ultra" categories.

MacBook Air and iPad Air cater to lightweight, consumer-friendly models.

Pro models target power users requiring high performance.

Ultra models, seen in Apple Watch Ultra and M3 Ultra chips, represent top-tier, high-performance devices.

Technology journalist Ryan Christoffel (9to5Mac) has also questioned why Apple would make the iPhone 17 Pro Max thicker while introducing an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. He speculates that Apple may be trying to create a more distinct separation between the iPhone tiers, including renaming the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the iPhone 17 Ultra.

Will Apple introduce the iPhone 17 Ultra?

Whether Apple will officially adopt the "Ultra" branding for the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains uncertain. Apple is known for closely guarding its product plans, often surprising consumers and analysts alike.

Until reliable sources confirm the existence of an iPhone 17 Ultra, enthusiasts will have to wait until Apple’s September 2025 launch event for definitive answers.
