New leaks regarding the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max have confirmed a significant memory upgrade, with Apple set to equip both models with 12GB of RAM.
This enhancement will make the Pro models the most powerful iPhones yet, optimizing AI performance and multitasking capabilities.
According to Jeff Pu, a well-known industry analyst, Apple plans to transition its iPhone 17 Pro lineup to LPDDR5 12GB RAM. Pu notes that this change alone is expected to contribute to a 3.5% annual increase in total DRAM demand, with Apple aiming to ship over 100 million new iPhones featuring the upgraded memory.
This marks the third time Jeff Pu has predicted a RAM upgrade for the iPhone 17 Pro series. His initial forecast in May 2024 was later supported by industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo, although Kuo initially suggested that only the Pro Max model would receive the memory boost. Pu reaffirmed his stance in October 2024, maintaining that both Pro models would get 12GB of RAM.
The increase in RAM is expected to significantly enhance Apple Intelligence, particularly for AI-driven features that require extensive memory.
Alongside the RAM boost, Pu also predicts that the iPhone 17 Pro models will introduce a 48MP telephoto camera and a 24MP front camera, further elevating Apple’s photography game.
Both Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo have a strong track record of accurate Apple predictions due to their close connections with Apple’s supply chain in Asia.
While Apple has yet to officially confirm these upgrades, the alignment of multiple sources lends credibility to the reports.
A natural evolution in Apple’s hardware strategy
Apple has consistently increased RAM in recent models to support Apple Intelligence. In 2023, the iPhone 16 lineup received a RAM upgrade across the board, with both iPhone 16 and 16 Plus getting 8GB RAM, a level previously reserved for Pro models.
Even the newly released iPhone 16e follows this trend, featuring 8GB RAM and full Apple Intelligence compatibility. Given this pattern, a jump to 12GB RAM for the iPhone 17 Pro series seems like the next logical step in Apple’s performance-driven strategy.
More than just a RAM upgrade
Beyond memory enhancements, the iPhone 17 Pro lineup is expected to introduce a redesigned camera module.
Leaked renders suggest that the three-lens system will maintain its signature triangular layout, but the camera bump will adopt a sleeker rectangular design with rounded edges.
The left side of the module will house the three main camera lenses, while the right side will feature the LED flash, microphone, and LiDAR scanner arranged vertically.
Other notable improvements include:
A switch from titanium to aluminum for the phone’s frame
A more compact Dynamic Island, thanks to Apple's metalens Face ID technology
Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip for faster connectivity
iPhone 17 lineup expected to launch in September 2025
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, following its traditional release schedule. The lineup will reportedly include four models:
iPhone 17
iPhone 17 Pro
iPhone 17 Pro Max
iPhone 17 Air, a super-thin version replacing the Plus model
With its enhanced RAM, upgraded cameras, and refined design, the iPhone 17 Pro is shaping up to be Apple’s most advanced smartphone yet.
