By early August 2019, the total international publications was equal to 70 percent of that of the whole year 2018.
Of the training establishments with highest growth in number of published articles, Nguyen Tat Thanh University is the most noteworthy.
It was not found in the top 10 in 2018, but has jumped to the fifth position in terms of the number of scientific articles published in the first seven mnths of 2019. This promises interesting changes in the rankings of top 10 universities in international publications in the upcoming years.
Though Vietnam’s universities and academies have made a big jump in scientific research, their achievements are very modest compared with top-tier universities in the region, according to DTU Research Infometa Group.

Statistics show that Vietnam’s universities are among mid-tier schools in Southeast Asia, ranking below the leading schools of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The number of published scientific research works by the top 3 in the region are five times, three times and two times, respectively.
This means that the state and higher education establishments need to make heavier investments in international publications to be able to catch up with regional universities.
Vietnam’s low research capability was the reason why no Vietnam school was found in the Times Higher Education’s (THE) 2019 ranking of 400 Asian universities. Of 10 Southeast Asian countries, only five found their names in the ranking, including Singapore (2 schools), Indonesia (6), Malaysia (11), Thailand (14) and the Philippines (2).
Having no representative in THE’s ranking means that in the eyes of the international community, Vietnam is just on the same par with Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Brunei in scientific research.
THE ranks universities based on many criteria, of which the number of international publications and citation index account for 60 percent total scores. Therefore, if a university has good scientific research activities, it has gone more than half way to add its name to the ranking.
However, this doesn’t mean that the higher numbers of ISI articles schools have, the higher positions they are on THE’s ranking.
University of Indonesia, for example, with 553 articles in the first seven months of 2019, still found its name in the 100-200 top. University of the Philippines, with 486 articles, still could find its name in top 100. Meanwhile, with 150 articles only, De La Salle University is still in top 300.
The research quality has significance which determines the rankings. The quality of research could be reflected in the number of citations and prestige of journals and researchers through Q-rating and H-index.
