VietNamNet Bridge - A recent study showed that International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) graduates are better prepared than the non-IB graduates in 21st-century skills.

The IBDP is an assessed program for students aged 16 to 19 that is well respected by leading universities across the globe. More than 4,000 schools around the world so far have chosen to teach the International Baccalaureate programs, with their unique academic rigor and emphasis on the students’ personal development.

The IBDP has seen an increasing popularity thanks to its strong focus on a wide range of skills, well-rounded education and international mindedness, which are believed to be fundamental for students to succeed in modern society.

According to Dr. Siva Kumari, IB Director General, research works suggest that an IB diploma is the best preparation for further education and for future career and IB graduates show continued curiosity and critical thinking throughout their lives.

IBDP students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics.

The 6th of July 2018 was a remarkable date for the British International School Hanoi (BIS Hanoi) when their very first IB cohort received the exam results.

The school’s average score on the IB Diploma was 32.3, significantly ahead of the 2018 global average of 29.78 points. The highest score amongst BIS Hanoi’s graduating class is 44 points (out of 45 maximum) which is an outstanding achievement equaled by only 1% of students worldwide to gain admission to the world's elite universities, such as Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard and Stanford.

This exceptional result was a cultivation of BIS Hanoi’s teachers and students after 2 years of working hard through this rigorous program.

“High school is a particularly significant part of our lives. Once students at BIS Hanoi reach Year 12 and enter the Sixth Form*, they begin an exciting and challenging phase of their academiccareer with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

The combination of critical thinking skills and a broad academic knowledgebase make BIS Hanoi graduates very appealing to higher education institutions,” said Mr. Adrian Duckett – IB Coordinator at BIS Hanoi.

As one of the most challenging curricula, the IBDP ensures that students maintain a breadth and depth of learning across six subject groups:  1/ Langue and Literature; 2/ Language Acquisition; 3/ Individuals and Societies; 4/ The Sciences; 5/ Mathematics; 6/ The Arts, where they are encouraged to engage in critical thinking, creativity and analysis.

At BIS Hanoi, parents could observe the clear results through high standard outcomes of their children in the latest IB Showcase, which includes huge portfolio of work that students create as part of their IB journey.

One of the program’s main aims is to develop internationally minded students with an informed perspective of the world, which is an important mind-set for 21st century’s citizens. The diverse language subjects of Mandarin, Spanish, French and English on offer at BIS Hanoi is an excellent way of building these qualities.

Part of the IBDP requires students to engage in a range of creativity, action and service projects (CAS) in which IB students take part in and contribute to their school, their local community and their global community. For example, over the past years, BIS Hanoi students have demonstrated admirable integrity and care whilst fundraising for community projects in Tanzania and Mai Chau.

The IBDP is a special educational framework that offers many excellent benefits, which develop students’ confidence to make a smooth transition to university and life.

Headed to the University of California, San Diego, BIS Hanoi Class of 2018 alumna Hai Yen strongly believed in the knowledge IBDP prepared for her new learning journey. Yen said: “I think because we have so much to do we have to find a balance, so the IB has really developed my management skills.”

Ha Noi - another BIS Hanoi alumnus, heading to Connecticut College, expressed a deep appreciation towards his IB studies, especially the CAS experience he had during a trip to Tanzania as he described, “the most valued opportunity and a memory forever”.

*In the education systems of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and some other Commonwealth countries, Sixth Form (sometimes referred to as Key Stage 5) represents the final 1-3 years of secondary education.
