The baby, weighing only 3kg, was transferred from a health centre in the neighbouring Quang Tri Province's mountainous Dakrong District.

The baby was hospitalised after she had difficulty in breathing, was vomiting frequently, and her body became darker in colour.

Doctors at the hospital diagnosed that she had a rare heart condition that required urgent surgery to place the arteries in the right positions.

On Wednesday, 10 days into intensive care, the girl had recovered and could be fed milk, according to the baby's mother Nguyen Thi Than.

Dang The Uyen, head of the hospital's cardiovascular anesthesia department, said on Wednesday that 15 babies with similar heart conditions had been saved in the hospital over the past few years.
