Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 12 ordered the intensification of the fight against both the acute respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) and the sluggish behaviors at work amid the current epidemic.

During a meeting with representatives of ministries and agencies in Hanoi, the leader reiterated the policy of protecting citizens’ lives partly at the expense of economic growth.

He asked for efforts to seek solutions to national development via production and services, economic restructuring, and capital disbursement.

Sectors were urged to devise their own plans to ensure economic growth as the 2020 target remains unchanged, as well as raise their sense of responsibility.

According to him, the Vietnam Tourism Advisory Board also suggested offering 30-day visa exemption for several markets to increase tourist arrivals.

The PM also mentioned several ways to cut visa and logistics costs, not hike prices of electricity, health care, education and other services, and step up public investment and disbursement of official development assistance, foreign direct investment and social investment.

The State Bank was required to closely monitor the market and control exchange rates.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the world economy will continue shrinking this year due to Covid-19 outbreak with losses estimated at 160 billion USD.

Local medical centers in HCMC’s Binh Tan District have received and monitored 1,024 people returning from coronavirus-affected regions, the district’s top official said on February 11.

Le Van Thinh, chairman of the district’s government, led a working delegation to check efforts to prevent and control the spread of the new coronavirus at Binh Tan Hospital that day.

According to him, 111 of the monitored cases were transferred from the city’s Center for Disease Control, 299 people were discovered by the local police and 614 others are experts employed by Pouyuen Vietnam Company.

Amid the outbreak of the new coronavirus, which emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year, the district has adopted many measures to raise local residents’ awareness of the virus, including sharing news through its official channels and relevant agencies.

It has also offered over 58,000 free face masks to local people and those attending meetings and conferences; sterilized residential areas, State-run agencies, schools, markets and transport hubs; and asked shopping malls and supermarkets to disinfect their facilities.

In addition, an adequate amount of medicine and equipment was prepared for quarantine efforts at hospitals throughout the district such as Binh Tan, Trieu An, Gia An and City International hospitals, according to the district’s leader.

The district has also set up another quarantine zone, with some 100 beds.

No cases of coronavirus have so far been reported in the district.

Deputy PM instructs tightening supervision to curb spread of Covid-19

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam on February 12 said supervision and quarantine work is the most important work at present to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).

Speaking at a meeting in Hanoi, Dam, who is also head of the national steering committee for prevention and control of acute respiratory disease caused by Covid-19, said localities must work to stamp out any outbreak, prevent disease transmission in community or at hospital.

The number of Covid-19 infections in Vietnam remains few at 15, and there are positive signs in treatment. However, the disease is expected to continue developing complicatedly and there is a very high risk of outbreak, the Deputy PM said.

In such circumstances, Deputy PM Dam asked competent forces to step up the communication work to raise the awareness of quarantined people about their responsibility towards their families and society.

He instructed ministries and agencies to coordinate with and provide support in human resources and medical equipment for northern Vinh Phuc province, which have the most Covid-19 cases so far (ten as of February 11), to localize and stamp out the outbreak.

Deputy Health Minister Truong Quoc Cuong said the fast transmission of the Covid-19 means prevention of transmission is the most important work at present.

The Health Ministry affirmed that district-level clinics have received training and necessary medical equipment to ensure they can diagnose and treat Covid-19 infections. Therefore, the ministry advised people with suspected signs of Covid-19 infection to seek diagnosis and treatment at district-level clinics instead of flocking to central-level hospitals to reduce the risk of the virus spreading in community.
