Endowed by nature with 15km of coast line and a system of criss-crossing rivers, Kim Son District in Ninh Binh Province has great potential for economic development.

We visited the sea at Kim Son with the guide, Nguyen Manh Ha, a cadre of Ninh Binh Province’s Aquatic Resource Protection Station.

Ha told us that previously the locals only grew rice and reeds in the coastal alluvial ground, however, in recent years they have taken advantage of the sea to develop the economy in the direction of aquiculture.

There are few coastal areas like Kim Son which has a high coastal alluvial ground, about 80-100m, and three aquatic resources of the fresh, brackish and salty water.

Previously, the locals only focused on raising tiger prawns that brought a higher profit than other aquatic species. Today, the locals also raise Indo-Pacific swamp crab, white leg shrimp, oysters, greasyback shrimp and four - eyed sleepers.

According to the statistics of Kim Son Commune’s People Committee, the total aquiculture farming area from the dyke of Binh Minh 1 to Con Noi Beach reaches 2,553.2ha.

In 2012, Kim Son harvested over 15,000 tonnes of seafood and aquatic products, mainly white leg shrimp, tiger prawns, brackish fish and Kim Son oysters which affirms its trademark in the domestic and foreign market.

At present, many families in Kim Son have invested to expand the farming areas and buy modern equipment to raise shrimp in an industrial direction.

It is considered new progress of the aquiculture in Kim Son District. Nguyen Van Bo, a local in Kim Dong Commune, said that the industrial model of raising shrimp brings a great profit to locals.

Each household in two communes of Kim Trung and Kim Dong earns an average income of 500 million dong/year.

Apart from developing the economy in aquiculture, Kim Son has also an envoy of over 100 boats for offshore fishing that provide stable jobs and income for locals, particularly young people.

According to Mai Van Thanh, Deputy Chairman of Kim Son District’s People Committee, in its strategy for economic development, Kim Son will implement the master plan for economic and social development in the coastal alluvial ground.

The district will also attract investment, develop aquiculture into an effective and sustainable direction, strengthen the management of the exploitation of coastal natural resources and protect the ecological environment in the biosphere reserve of the submerged area.
