Huyen to run at world championship

Nguyen Thi Huyen will be Viet Nam's sole representative to compete at the Athletics World Championships in China next month.

The Southeast Asian Games winner will compete in the women's 400m and the 400m hurdle.

Huyen is the second Vietnamese runner to attend the world tournament. The first, Truong Thanh Hang, competed in the women's 800m in 2011.

The 15th year of the tournament is scheduled for August 22-28 in Beijing, China.

Nghia back to coach Quang Ninh

Coach Dinh Cao Nghia has agreed to resume coaching the V.League 1 side Quang Ninh Coal after resting for two rounds.

Nghia sent his resignation to the club's management after Quang Ninh's performance failed to match expectations after the end of the first leg and in the early stages of the second leg.

However, his resignation was not accepted, and the managers persuaded him to stay on.

In his absence, Quang Ninh won a match and lost a second match. They are now ranked seventh, with 27 points.

The next round will begin on July 23, and Quang Ninh will host defending champions Becamex Binh Duong at Cam Pha Stadium.

South Korean Lee wins third stage in cycling tournament

Lee Eun-hee won the third stage of the An Giang Television Cycling Tournament yesterday, July 21.

Lee of South Korea's Samyang team went solo 6km to complete the 95km stage from Vinh Long to Soc Trang City with a time of 2hr 36.32min.

Pham Hong Loan of Biwase-Binh Duong came second, followed by Nguyen Thi Thi of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi-An Giang.

Her outstanding victory has pushes Lee to the top spot with a total time of 6:6.37. Loan and Thi have secured the second and third positions, respectively.

Nguyen Thi That of Gao Hat Ngoc Troi-An Giang retains the leader's green jersey in the race with 54 points.

Samyang lead the team rankings after three stages. Biwase-Binh Duong and Gao Hat Ngoc Troi-An Giang are close behind.

Lee will start the 117km fourth stage, from Soc Trang to Ca Mau City, in her yellow jersey today.

HCMC team rank first at National Junior Swimming Championship 2015

The National Junior Swimming Championship 2015 yesterday closed at Phu Tho Swimming Club. After five days of competition, Ho Chi Minh City team captured the first position with achievement of 25 gold, 17 silver, and 16 bronze medals.

Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram of HCM City based-National Sports Training Centre snatched three gold medals in the women’s 50m freestyle (27 minutes 10 seconds), 400m individual medley (5 minutes 9 seconds) and 200m butterfly (2 minutes 23 seconds).

Nguyen Quang Thuan who is young brother of Asian Game champion Nguyen Thi Anh Vien was not enough to grab medal at the swimming championship. The 9 years old athlete was ranked seventh position in the men’s 50 m backstroke under 11 years- old.

On the same day, athlete Tran Duy Khoi achieved one gold medal in the men’s 50 backstroke. His achievement is also considered a bid farewell to junior swimming competitions because next year Duy Khoi will grow out of junior status.

Five highlights of Toyota V-League 1-2015 Round 17

A number of interesting surprises were seen in the the 17th round of the 2015 V-League season that concluded on July 19. Let’s take a look back at some of the most noticeable points in this round of play. 

1. Hoang Anh Gia Lai win after 11 rounds of losses and draws

Hoang Anh Gia Lai put an end to their 11-game losing streak with an encouraging 2-1 victory against reigning champions Becamex Binh Duong on Sunday. Two goals scored by Thanh Tung helped HA.GL escape the relegation zone, three points ahead of bottom-placed Dong Nai.

2. Top-two teams suffer shocking defeats

Title favourites, FLC Thanh Hoa and Becamex Binh Duong shocked fans with their respective unexpected losses to Dong Tam Long An and HA.GL last weekend. Although there were no changes to their top-two place on the ladder, their score gap with the teams behind was narrowed to just two points.

3. Song Lam Nghe An record convincing win

Despite being considered of equal strength to Quang Ninh Coal, Song Lam Nghe An demonstrated their superiority with a convincing 3-1 victory on Sunday. Phi Son had a good game with one assist, a strike that hit the post and a beautiful individual goal. Meanwhile, Quang Ninh Coal, under an interim manager, continued to perform poorly, especially in the defensive line.

4. Impressive counterattack by Hanoi T&T

Hanoi T&T were led 0-1 by XSKT Can Tho during the first 70 minutes of their 17th-round meeting. However, the 2014 runners-up made a strong uprising in the last 15 minutes of the game, scoring three consecutive goals to seal a 3-1 win over XSKT Can Tho.

5. The smile of Toshiya Miura

The happiest man in this round of play might be Toshiya Miura, coach of the men’s national football team, who made a trip to select 25 players for the friendly match against Manchester City on July 27. At Vinh Stadium, Miura witnessed an excellent pairing of Mac Hong Quan and Vu Minh Tuan, while enjoying a brilliant showing by Tran Phi Son. 

Toyota Vietnam opens junior football camp

Toyota Motor Vietnam (TMV) on Sunday kicked off its “Toyota Junior Football Clinic & Camp 2015” in the nation’s south by holding the preliminary round in HCMC for more than 700 children aged from 9 to 11.

The kids had to take three tests on individual skills for 30 minutes for the judging board, which includes professional coach Nguyen Hong Son, to evaluate their basic skills and flexibility in different situations.

After the tests, 200 children were chosen to play in small matches for ten minutes before 44 are selected for two matches with 11 players in each team in line with international standards.

The selection round will be held in Hanoi, Danang and Can Tho with around 2,000 participants, in which the top 30 will be chosen for the camping and training course set for August 8 to 14 in HCMC.

The top 18 players in the course will represent Toyota Vietnam in a friendly match in Japan with Sagantosu, the junior football team of the Japan Professional Football League, by the end of August.

Supported by the Ministry of Education and Training, the Toyota Junior Football Clinic & Camp 2015 is the first football event held for children by Toyota Vietnam. It is opened for all Vietnamese school boys aged between 9 and 11 nationwide.
