Pham Huu Quoc, director of Go Vap General Hospital, is accused of illegally selling face masks.
The case was brought to public attention after someone took to the internet to say that a box of face masks was sold at VND250,000 (USD11) at Go Vap Hospital. After receiving VND6 bn as a deposit, Quoc then transferred the goods but all of them were fake masks. The buyers then burnt the masks in front of the hospital gate.
Quoc denied the accusation. According to Quoc, a man asked Quoc to be the middleman to buy face masks twice but Quoc refused. The third time, this man brought his foreign partner along, saying that they were doing charity work. Quoc asked a nurse helped them out. The man later transferred VND3.3bn to Quoc since they were unable to make the money transfer to the nurse.
Quoc said he only made his account available for the transit of money. All businesses and transaction were done by the nurse.
Tra Van Lao, head of the police in Go Vap said Quoc had called him for help, saying that someone was threatening his life. "However, he called again and said that everything had been dealt with. The police are investigating the case," Lao said.
Go Vap Police Department said Quoc had not made any call to the station's operator.
The case is under investigation.
