Chung joined the team in October, 2017 on a two-year contract and was expected to push the former champions back into the top group of the league.

But after two years, the South Korean did not have much of an influence on the team. The 2017-18 season was considered a failure for the team, who failed to make the top five. They had 31 points and finished in 10th place.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai are currently coached by Duong Minh Ninh and are training in preparation for the Binh Duong Television International Football Cup later this month.

They will welcome talented midfielder Nguyen Tuan Anh back into the fold after months on the sideline due to injuries.
