Ho Chi Minh City is set to experience multiple heatwaves throughout March, with peak temperatures reaching 37°C or higher, according to the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center.
Despite being in the dry season, the city is also expected to see isolated heavy rains, particularly in early and mid-March.
Le Dinh Quyet, head of forecasting at the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center, provided an overview of the expected weather patterns.
He noted that in the first ten days of March, a weakening continental cold front from the north will gradually move eastward, while a low-pressure system from the west will expand over northern Vietnam.
Between March 4 and 5, another strong cold front will push southward, affecting weather conditions until March 9 or 10.
This system could also create a low-pressure zone over the East Sea, potentially triggering thunderstorms and hazardous weather at sea.
Heatwaves and sudden storms to dominate March weather
Based on these meteorological patterns, Ho Chi Minh City is expected to see hot weather from March 1 to 4, particularly in the central districts.
Between March 4 and 7, scattered showers and localized heavy rains may occur. Another round of rain is expected between March 9 and 10 due to unstable weather conditions.
During the second week of March, temperatures will continue to rise as the continental cold front weakens, while a low-pressure system over the East Sea lingers for several days.
By mid-March, hot weather will return, with showers and isolated thunderstorms affecting certain parts of southeastern Vietnam and areas near the southwest border.
By the last week of March, a hot low-pressure system from the west will intensify, while the weakening cold front will no longer extend to southern Vietnam. This will result in widespread sunny conditions across Ho Chi Minh City, with multiple days of extreme heat in the downtown area. However, afternoon and evening thunderstorms may still occur due to localized convective activity.
According to meteorologists, March temperatures in Ho Chi Minh City will be noticeably higher than February, with prolonged periods of intense heat.
The absolute highest temperatures in central districts could exceed 37°C, making it one of the hottest months of the year so far.
Key weather statistics for March
Total number of hot days: 7 to 12 days
Average monthly temperature: 28–29°C
Maximum temperatures: 33–36°C (occasional peaks of 37°C or higher)
Minimum temperatures: 22–25°C
Notably, some heatwaves lasting several days will see maximum temperatures between 35°C and 37°C, especially in urban areas.
Health and safety concerns amid early heatwaves
Meteorologists have warned that early-season heatwaves may have adverse health effects, particularly for outdoor workers and vulnerable individuals.
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion and dehydration, making it crucial to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours.
Additionally, despite the dry season, occasional showers and thunderstorms will still occur. In the first half of March, scattered rainfall is expected due to easterly wind disturbances.
By the second half of the month, thunderstorms will mainly result from localized convective activity, especially in southeastern provinces and areas near the southwest border.
During thunderstorms, residents should be cautious of lightning, strong winds, hail, and localized flooding, which can pose risks to both people and property.
As March unfolds, Ho Chi Minh City residents should prepare for both scorching heat and sudden, intense rainfall, ensuring they stay safe in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
