Ho Chi Minh City and southeastern provinces are experiencing their most intense heatwave of the season, with temperatures exceeding 36°C (96.8°F).

The extreme heat is expected to persist, while northern Vietnam sees a rapid rise in temperatures as cold air weakens.

Severe heatwave grips southern Vietnam

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), March 19 marked the peak of the heatwave in southeastern Vietnam, with humidity levels dropping to 55-60%.

The heat is expected to intensify on March 20-21, with daily highs ranging from 35-36°C (95-96.8°F), and some areas surpassing 36°C. Humidity will continue to drop to 50-55%, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and fire hazards.

“The upcoming days will likely bring the most extreme heat since the start of the dry season,” said Le Dinh Quyet, head of forecasting at the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center.

Rising risks: Heatwaves and fire hazards

The prolonged heat, combined with low humidity, poses severe risks, including:

Increased fire hazards in residential areas due to rising electricity consumption.

Higher wildfire risks in dry forested areas.

Health threats such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke from prolonged exposure.

Important note: Actual outdoor temperatures may feel 2-4°C higher than forecasted, especially in urban areas with concrete and asphalt surfaces.

Northern Vietnam sees rising temperatures

As the cold front weakens, northern Vietnam is transitioning from cold mornings and nights to warmer daytime temperatures.

From March 20, northern provinces will remain cool at night but will see more sunshine during the day.

By March 21, Central Vietnam will also warm up, with light rain in the north and mild cold temperatures in the mornings.

Long-term forecasts suggest that by March 25, northwestern Vietnam may even see hot weather, with some areas reaching heatwave conditions.

Hanoi will experience significant temperature differences between day and night:

March 20-22: Daytime highs of 25-26°C (77-78.8°F), while nighttime lows drop to 15-17°C (59-62.6°F).

By March 25: Daytime temperatures may reach 28-29°C (82.4-84.2°F), with nighttime lows rising to 22-23°C (71.6-73.4°F).
