The HCM City Department of Transport is seeking the municipal people’s committee's approval for a local company to pilot 100 electric cars.

HCM City to pilot 100 electric taxis

According to the department, this is part of Mai Linh Group's project to run 10,000 electric cars to replace Mai Linh-branded  taxis around Vietnam, including 3,964 in HCM City.

The Ho Huy Investment Company said that electric cars are expected to cut down emissions by 940,000 tonnes, save over 406 million litres of petrol worth USD134 million as well as 50%-60% of energy costs against those using petrol.

Under the HCM City Department of Transport's proposal, once the trial is successful, municipal authorities should take consideration to allow the firm to run more electric cars in the city.

Earlier, Auto Motors Vietnam - the importer of Renault cars in Vietnam - and Mai Linh Group agreed to launch the electric taxi service in Vietnam this year under a deal signed in December 2015.

Around 10,000 Renault electric cars will be imported into Vietnam in the next 5 years aiming to carry out the initial stage of a pilot project in Hanoi, HCM City and Danang, contributing to curbing environmental pollution.
