It would run above the length of National Highway 1A between the two points, passing through districts 12 and Binh Chanh.

The Department of Transport said the 30.4km road would be 17.5 metres wide and have four lanes.

It will pass through Thu Duc District, District 12, Binh Chanh District and Binh Tan District.

The road will cost VND17 trillion (US$772 million) and be built in BOT (build – operate – transfer) mode.

Each of its two phases will take two years, with work on the second starting in 2020.

Ultimately, the city plans to build five elevated roads with a total length of more than 70km to ease traffic jams in the downtown area.

Meanwhile, the city People’s Council has green lighted construction of the Nguyen Khoai Bridge over the Te Canal linking Districts 7 and 4, according to the city’s Urban Transport Management Authority No.4.

The 346m long, 22.5m wide bridge from D1 Street in District 7 to Ben Van Don Street in District 4 will be the second over the canal.

Construction, which will cost VND1.25 trillion ($57 million), will start next year and take 18 months.
