Chung made the pledge while receiving General Director of Samsung Vietnam Choi Joo-ho in Hanoi on April 23.
He noted that the municipal authorities have granted licence and completed procedures for the project in the 2015-2016 period. The city also agreed with Samsung Vietnam’s proposal to build the new R&D centre at a new location, Chung said.
The chairman voiced his hope that Samsung will accelerate the project to promptly start the construction of the R&D centre.
For his part, Choi Joo-ho said after a delay, the project to build the R&D centre has been resumed.
The centre will cover an area of about 11,600 sq.m. in Hanoi’s Tay Ho Tay (West Lake) urban area, which is expected to become a world-class R&D centre.
Choi said it will be the sole centre specialising in mobile phones and network devices, and expected to take the lead in Samsung’s 5G technology development, contributing to the building of smart factories in Vietnam in the future.
The centre will also strengthen the position of Vietnam as Samsung’s strategic hub in the region, and serve as a headquarters of Samsung in Vietnam, he stressed.
Samsung currently boasts six factories in Vietnam, along with a research centre in Hanoi. In 2018, Samsung Vietnam posted export revenues of 60 billion USD, accounting for 25 percent of Vietnam’s total export value.-VNA
