VietNamNet Bridge – Being arrested right after throwing his wife to the Duong River in Gia Lam district, Hanoi, Nguyen Kim Duc, 54, said that his wife wanted to die so he “helped” her.
Duong Bridge, where Duc threw his wife into the river.
At the police station, Duc declared that at 10.30am on June 1, he carried his wife by motorcycle from their home in Giang Bien Ward, Long Bien District, Hanoi to Tu Son Town in Bac Ninh province for acupuncture.
Along the way, the couple started a quarrel. Running to the middle of the Duong Bridge, Duc stopped the motorbike, lifted his paralyzed wife from the motorcycle and threw her into the river. After that he found a cool place to avoid the sun and was arrested shortly thereafter.
Explaining his callous behavior, Duc said that his wife wanted to die so he “helped” her.
Duc declared that his wife had a stroke half of a year ago. Since then the relations between Duc and his wife became strained. Conflicts often occurred between them. Duc once burned the kitchen while his wife attempted suicide twice by electricity and weed-killer.
A few days ago, they quarreled again. Hien moved to her mum’s house for several days. Duc then offered an apology to his wife and took her home. Every day he still took her to Bac Ninh for acupuncture.
A neighbor said that on the morning of June 1, just several hours before Duc threw his wife to the river, this man said that he was willing to sell his house to cure his wife’s disease.
Duc and Hien have two sons. Duc is a worker and Hien was a farmer. Duc used to be treated of mental disorders many years ago.
In the afternoon of June 2, Hien’s body was picked up from the river, 15km away from the Duong Bridge.
