Playing Aronian of the United States who is ranked eighth globally and is notable for having won the FIDE World Cup in 2005 and 2017, the Vietnamese GM took advantage of his opponent's mistakes to seal victory in 57 moves.
The 10th and 11th matches saw Quang Liem record two draws against Praggnanandhaa of India and Ivan Saric of Croatia. In the 12th match, he surprised everyone by beating Vasyl Ivanchuk of Ukraine in just 35 moves.
With two wins and two draws recorded on the third day of competition, Liem climbed from eighth to third in the 16-man field.
If Liem keeps up his pace in the remaining three games, he will have a great chance of finishing within the top eight and advancing to the second round.
Liem is scheduled to face Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland, Boris Gelfand of Israel, and Christopher Yoo Woojin of the US on September 21 evening.
The Julius Baer Generation Cup, the fifth regular tournament in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, is taking place from September 18 to September 25 on chess24. The ultimate winner of the competition will receive prize money of US$150,000.
