VietNamNet Bridge – Grand Master Le Quang Liem successfully held Chess World Cup defending champion Peter Svidler to a draw in their return leg match of the fourth round on August 21.
Despite his advantage of moving first, Svidler failed to break Liem’s strong defence.
The two players agreed to stop the match after 24 moves.
After two 1-1 draws, they will have to enter a tie-break of two rapid chess games on August 22.
This is considered a good chance for Liem to overwhelm his opponent as he performed well in the previous rapid chess events defeating Russian strong player Aleksandr Grischuk in the third round of the tournament.
However, Svidler is also expected to come out in glory as he is still a mystery to Liem. He did not attend the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships last June.
