In February 2023, a large vessel unexpectedly ran aground at Bai Thong Beach in Vinh Truong Hamlet, Phuoc Dinh Commune, Thuan Nam District, Ninh Thuan Province. Since then, the mysterious wreck has become a popular check-in spot, attracting numerous visitors.

A ghostly spectacle on Vietnam’s coastline

The rusted, abandoned ship lies about 500 meters from shore. When the tide recedes, its massive and weathered structure emerges against the backdrop of pristine beaches and moss-covered rocks, creating a scene reminiscent of Hollywood or Korean films.

Ngoc Bich, a 29-year-old traveler from Da Lat, recently visited Ninh Thuan and was captivated by the shipwreck’s eerie charm.

"I arrived in the late afternoon, and the sunlight shimmering on the water created a striking contrast. As the tide ebbed, green moss-covered rocks appeared, adding to the surreal beauty. At sunset, the landscape became even more nostalgic and artistic," she shared.

How to find and explore the stranded ship

Travelers can locate the site by searching for “stranded ship” or “ghost ship” on Google Maps. For those unfamiliar with the area, locals can provide directions.

"As this is an unofficial check-in spot, visitors should exercise caution. I recommend not getting too close to the ship for safety reasons. Wearing protective footwear is advisable, as sharp objects may be hidden among the mossy rocks. The area can be slippery, and it’s best to avoid wading into deep waters when the tide rises," Bich advised.

Best time to visit Ninh Thuan’s ghost ship

According to Luong Phong, a 35-year-old photographer from Ninh Thuan, the best time to visit is February and March, when the weather is sunny and rain-free.

"In the morning, visitors can enjoy the vibrant colors of seaweed and moss, while the evening offers a stunning sunset view over the wreck," Phong noted.

Few places allow visitors to observe a large vessel up close, as ships of this size are typically seen only in the open sea.

For those exploring the area, Phong suggests visiting nearby attractions, including:

The story behind the abandoned ship

The vessel, named Thanh Hung 06, was owned by a real estate company. It was traveling from Nhon Trach Port (Dong Nai) to Cam Ranh Port (Khanh Hoa) when an unexpected mechanical failure caused it to drift ashore at Bai Thong Beach.

The ship suffered severe structural damage, including a ruptured hull and a broken rudder. Over time, the rusting structure has deteriorated further, with recent fractures appearing along its body.

As the wreck gained popularity, local authorities installed warning signs prohibiting visitors from approaching the ship to ensure public safety.
