At the invitation of General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong, Mr. Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Vietnam from April 14 to 15. This marks the first time since the normalization of diplomatic ties that a Chinese President and General Secretary has made five visits to Vietnam.

This will be Xi Jinping’s second state visit to Vietnam during his third term as General Secretary and President of China.

His first visit took place in December 2011, when he was China’s Vice President. As President and General Secretary, Xi Jinping has since returned to Vietnam in 2015, 2017, and 2023.

December 2011

In December 2011, at the invitation of Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping made an official visit to Vietnam. The trip occurred just two months after Vietnam’s General Secretary had visited China.

This visit played a significant role in strengthening the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two Parties and nations. During his three-day stay, Xi Jinping met with key Vietnamese leaders.
