The Dak Mil District People's Committee announced on Sunday afternoon that the tragic accident occurred on Saturday afternoon when four boys aged between 4-6 came to a local pond to bathe.
"The children came from two families in the area," the committee reported. "They went to swim in the pond while their parents were out working at coffee farms. And the incident was only noticed when the parents arrived home and went to find their children."
It is said that the pond was built by a local family to contain water for watering the coffee trees.
On Sunday, two other boys aged 5 were also found dead in a canal in the southern province of Ca Mau. Initial investigations showed that the children fell into the canal while playing there without supervision from adults.
A 2020 report by the Department of Child Affairs said drowning is one of the major causes of death of children aged 12-15 in Vietnam. The country records an average 2,000 deaths by drowning every year, the highest in Southeast Asia.
