Hanoi’s People’s Committee has approved a project to renovate and upgrade the left Buoi and right Day River dikes in Chuong My District. The project aims to prevent flooding for thousands of households living in Hanoi’s flood-prone areas.

Under the plan, sections of dikes passing through residential areas will be upgraded and widened to match current conditions, incorporating flood prevention measures while ensuring smooth transportation for residents.

To enhance flood control and improve transportation, the city will renovate and upgrade nearly 17 kilometers of Buoi River dikes. Of this:

Approximately 7 kilometers will feature wave-blocking walls.

The remaining sections will see improvements to the road surface, ensuring flood prevention and accessibility.

The right Day River dike will also be upgraded, with over 17 kilometers of improvements stretching from Lam Dien Commune to the Luu Xa junction in Hoa Chinh Commune. The road atop the dike will be widened to 5.5 meters.

The total investment for the project to renovate and upgrade the left Buoi and right Day River dikes is 460 billion VND, with construction costs exceeding 358 billion VND.

Hanoi aims to complete the project by 2027, with Chuong My District assigned as the project’s investor.

For years, thousands of households near the Buoi River in communes such as Tan Tien, Nam Phuong Tien, and Hoang Van Thu have endured regular flooding during the rainy season. Since 2017, flooding has worsened significantly.

During the 2024 rainy season alone, the "flood-prone heart" of Chuong My District experienced two severe floods, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate for days. Many households in the flood-affected areas lost all their possessions.

The approval of this dike renovation and upgrade project by Hanoi’s People’s Committee holds significant importance in stabilizing the lives of affected residents.

Chuong My District’s administration has confirmed that it is actively implementing the next steps of the project, aiming to commence construction in June 2025.
