VietNamNet Bridge – The bridges are not only historic but also contribute to facilitate local people’s travel and create their very own beauty in the Mekong Delta.
1. My Thuan Bridge
As the first cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam connecting the two banks of Tien River and the two provinces of Tien Giang and Vinh Long, My Thuan Bridge is located on National Highway 1A, the main traffic route of the Mekong Delta, 123km southwest from Ho Chi Minh City.
The bridge has made a major contribution to the economic development of the Mekong Delta. It has a navigation span of 350 m and a total length of 1,536 m. It was developed in a joint venture between the governments of Australia and Vietnam. The bridge was the largest overseas assistance project undertaken by the Australian government costing A$91 million.
2. Can Tho Bridge
Connecting the two banks of the Hau River between Can Tho and Vinh Long, at the time of completion in 2010, Can Tho Bridge was the cable-stayed bridge with the longest main span in Southeast Asia and 10th longest in the world.
The bridge is 2.75 kilometers long. It has a six-lane carriageway measuring 23 meters in width, with four lanes for traffic and two pedestrian lanes. It has a clearance of 39 meters, which allows large ships to pass underneath it. The cost of construction is estimated to be approximately US$342.6 million, making it one of the most expensive bridges in Vietnam.
3. Rach Mieu Bridge
The construction of this bridge started in 2002 and was inaugurated in 2009. The bridge is located on Highway 60 across the Tien River, connecting the city of My Tho and Ben Tre province. This is a typical work invested, designed and built by the Vietnamese.
Before Rach Mieu Bridge was put to use, Ben Tre province was a peninsula completely isolated from other neighborhoods.
Rach Mieu is the third-largest cable-stayed bridge in the southwest, besides My Thuan and Can Tho Bridges. It has a length of 8,331 m, including approach ramps. The main bridge consists of two separate parts No. 1 and No. 2 for a total length of 2868 m, and a cable-stayed structure layout 117m-270m-117m.
The total investment for this work is US$84 million.
4. Vinh Nguon Bridge
In Chau Doc, An Giang Province, there is a very famous canal running along the border between Vietnam and Cambodia - Vinh Te canal. This used to be the longest and largest canal built during the longest period of land reclamation in South Vietnam.
The Vinh Nguon Bridge spans the Vinh Te canal, linking Chau Doc City and the young border ward of Vinh Nguon.
This bridge facilitates road traffic and helps speed up the field of trade, agriculture and public services, improving the living standards for people in Vinh Nguon, and contributing to border economic development in Chau Doc.
5. Binh Thuy Bridge
Binh Thuy Bridge spans Nang Gu Canal, connecting traffic on Highway 91 from the town of Chau Doc to Cho Moi town, My Luong town and Sa Dec city.
Although it is a small bridge, it has a special significance in linking Cho Moi district, and An Giang province with Chau Phu district and southwestern provinces in the Mekong Delta.
