From September to March (lunar calendar), the famous Thung Mountain, also known as the Eye of God Mountain, in Cao Bang undergoes a striking transformation.
As the water recedes, a vast grassland emerges, drawing visitors eager to experience its unique beauty.
A geological marvel with a mysterious past
Located in Ban Danh Village, Quoc Toan Commune, Tra Linh District, Thung Mountain is part of the Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark.
Standing approximately 100 meters high, the mountain appears as a massive, lush green cone, distinctively rising from the valley floor. Locals refer to it as Phja Piot in the Tay language.
Formed over 300 million years ago, it is actually a fossilized cave created by natural geological movements.
A seasonal wonder: from valley to lake
Due to tectonic shifts during the Neotectonic period, the area developed its current elevation. Thung Mountain features tower karsts and conical formations, interspersed with numerous interconnected lakes.
During the dry season (September to March), the water recedes, unveiling a breathtaking grassy valley, perfect for camping, hiking, and cycling.
However, in the rainy season (April to August), the area transforms into a crystal-clear lake spanning up to 15 hectares, offering a completely different experience.
A window to the sky: The Eye of God
One of the most fascinating aspects of Thung Mountain is its giant natural hole, resembling an eye when viewed from a distance.
Visitors can gaze through it from one side of the mountain to the other, giving the impression of a floating cave suspended in the sky.
In recent years, Thung Mountain has gained popularity among international travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences.
A panoramic viewpoint at the top offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the valley, making it a must-visit check-in spot for photographers and nature lovers.
The rugged dirt paths leading to the site, carved by motorcycles and off-road vehicles, add to the sense of adventure, making the journey just as exciting as the destination.
With its unspoiled beauty, seasonal transformations, and unique geological features, the Eye of God Mountain is truly a natural masterpiece waiting to be explored.
