“Chèo” Performance

Sat 30 Nov 2013, 7 pm

Kim Liên Commune House

No. 148A, Kim Hoa, Dong Da Dist, Hanoi

For years, “Chèo” has been known as a purely-Vietnamese art form which is familiar with native’s daily life. Until now, “Chèo”, along with “Ca trù” and “Dân ca quan họ”, has become important “key words” for those who want to discover Vietnamese traditional culture.

“Chèo” first came into being in the tenth century in Hoa Lu old capital by a talented singer and dancer named Pham Thi Tran. At the early age, “Chèo” existed in the form of folk dancing. Gradually, it became an annual activity that appeared in every vacation and festival, attracting a lot of people. Since then “Chèo” has been regarded as the symbol of Vietnam folk art.

One of the most special things in every pieces of “Chèo” is characters, which almost originated in real life such as Xuy Van, Thi Kinh, Thi Mau, Me Dop and clown. With these characters, people expressed their thoughts and feelings about their life as well as their society. Traditionally, “Chèo” concentrates on the struggle between good things and bad things. Through this struggles, old Vietnamese express their outlook on life and their hopeness of a good, equal and happy life.

For a long time, many pieces of “Chèo”, such as Quan Am Thi Kinh, Luu Binh Duong Le, Kim Nham, etc., have continuously been enjoyed by generations of Vietnamese people. However, “Chèo” is no longer attractive to the youngsters, including both of the viewers and the artists. What is the reason? Is it because Vietnamese young people today dislike “Chèo”? or Is it because of the gap between the old artist’s transmitting methods and the young’s access to “Chèo”? or “Chèo” is overshadowed by the rising of many modern art forms?

We hope that through this program about Chèo, today Vietnamese will have a chance to fully enjoy the atmosphere of this traditional art. Participants will come to the community house, sit in sedge mats and learn how to enjoy “Chèo” in a right way. In addition to playing some pieces of “Chèo”, we also have a talk show with “Chèo” artists and researchers to know more about the state of “Chèo” and their thoughts of this folk art.

SURVIVALISM: Eating the Apocalypse By ‘The Weather Bureau’

Sat 30 Nov 2013

Talk: 5.30 pm

Pop-up exhibition: 6.30 pm

San Art Laboratory

40/18 Pham Viet Chanh, Ward 19, Binh Thanh Dist, HCMC

Based on their ongoing exploration on using food as material in recreating and photographing natural disasters, ‘The Weather Bureau’ (represented in Saigon by Lena Cobangbang) is prompted by the recent ravage of the Southern islands of Visayas in The Philippines. The overwhelming call for international awareness in coping with climate change and the everyday struggle one faces amidst the crisis brought on by natural disasters and social weathering (wars, economic embargos, economic policies), ‘The Weather Bureau’ decided to make an installation that refers to the tenuous relationship between concepts of survival , preservation and consumption. In this installation the refrigerator is used as a metaphorical and visual platform for their objects and tableaus. Composed of jars of preserved and fermented vegetables and fruits, carved and composed as idyllic postcard rural landscapes; apocalyptic scenarios of cooked food but sealed in the freezer compartment – all is sealed in posterity for their picturesqueness or kept for future consumption. The wealth and diversity of the food culture of Vietnam provides a veritable source for exploration for this artistic duo. Examining ideas of conflict between hunger and waste, amplified further in ‘The Weather Bureau’s physical distance from the current crisis of their homeland, this project cynically refers to general worldwide hunger brought about by social and natural change, which with time, perhaps brings us closer to an apocalypse or total dystopia.

ABOUT ‘THE WEATHER BUREAU’

‘The Weather Bureau’ designs propositionary structures and conditions for an ideal state of utopia. They build these designs from seemingly failed plans of defunct totalitarian states. They seek to re-adapt/ rehabilitate in order to question the possibility of a utopia, which perhaps is just a nowhereland in timeless stasis. Founded in 2010 by Lena Cobangbang and Mike Crisostomo, who started collaborating as production designers and product stylists for ad virals, print, packaging designs and stage sceneries. Their vision as ‘The Weather Bureau’ is to picture essences of the ideal as inherently dictated by the constraints of the form, illustrating perhaps an ideology in plasticity.

‘The Weather Bureau’ are the second artist-guests to take part in ‘Prod/Ponder’, the artist-in-residence program as part of ‘Conscious Realities’, a 3 year initiative bringing a cross range of interdisciplinary artists and thinkers from South East Asia, South Asia, Latin America and Africa to Vietnam.

Graphic Design at Goethe-Institut Hanoi: 59th International Typographic Exhibition of the New York Type Directors Club

On the milk carton, we take out of the fridge for breakfast every morning, it says how fresh the product is in big Arial letters. On the advertising board in the bus, the best mobile phone tariff is advertised in Helvetica and in Times New Roman the sign hanging outside of the office reminds costumers of the opening hours. Printed letters and words surround us every day.

The 59th exhibition of the New York Type Directors Club (TDC) at the Goethe-Institut Hanoi deals with this exactly topic: From 30th November to 8th of December visitors get the opportunity to discover the works of the winners of the international TDC-Competition 2013, which awards excellency in the use and design of types, typefaces and letterforms.

The Type Directors Club was founded in 1946 and is the leading international organization whose purpose is to support excellence in typography, both in print and on screen.

The exhibition T59 presents works from all over the world. In this year’s contest more than 2000 works from 33 countries have been admitted from which 215 winning entries emerged.

The 2013 exhibition in Hanoi is organised by Richard Moore Associates in cooperation with the FPT (Future Philosophy and Technology) Arena and the Goethe-Institut.

The TDC especially welcomes all professionals and students in graphic design, advertising, marketing, communications, multimedia, publishing and education, who have a keen interest in type and the written word.

Painting Exhibition “Sen Việt”

Opening: Mon 25 Nov, 5.30 pm

Exhibition: 25 Nov – 09 Dec 2013

Casa Italia

18 Le Phung Hieu, Hanoi

You are invited to the exhibition “Sen Viet”, by the Vietnamese artist Dang Phuong Viet. The Exhibition will be a special opportunity to learn more about Vietnamese art.

Born in 1972 in Hanoi, Dang Phuong Viet graduated from Hanoi Fine Arts University. Viet’s works are mainly oil on canvas, in the language of modern realism. In the last fifteen years, Viet participated in several exhibitions, both in Vietnam and abroad. His works are displayed in numerous galleries and in private collections.

Dang Phuong Viet has been famous for his works with lotus flowers. His special oil painting technique and usage of colours is impressive. Viet gave a modern vision to the traditional concept of lotus as symbol of beauty, resilience and enlightenment. The artist choice of colours is challenging, with a seeming cacophony of colours – ranging from acid greens to shocking fuchsias and fire-engine red, combining them harmoniously: the results indeed are surprising. It seems that the painter is working more with the emotions that with the reality.

Installation Exhibition “The Foaming Weariness”

Opening: Fri 22 Nov 2013, 5 pm

Exhibition: 22 – 30 Nov 2013

New Space Arts Foundation, Hue

2nd Floor, Number 15 Le Loi, Hue City

You are invited to an installation art exhibition “The Foaming Weariness” by artist Chu Chun Teng (Taiwan).

Foaming steam、different country’s electric adapters adapting endlessly、rice cooker、scent of rice… The foaming weariness is a very simple and personal piece among my practices, it truly reflects my personally state in the pass three years.

Since 2008, I moved to London from Taiwan, and have been being just like most of international students who were expecting the experience of studying abroad would bring better/different future, but the cultural impacts and hardships in daily life are everywhere; For the reason, I pushed myself, also yearned for a better language ability, appropriate behaviors, and logical thoughts in order to integrate into this new society/cultural more. Measwhile, I started to be aware of the my native context and difference through this accommodation, then to struggle and question myself about that if it is impossible and unnecessary to change myself…

In conclusion, the endlessness-like adaptor connections shows a mental process that all kind of complex band together and entangled to another, in which the fatique me overflows by boiling just as the rice cooker.

“The Rain in Spain stay mainly in the plain” is the sentence that Professor Higgins uses to train Eliza to pronounce the “A” sound in “My Fair Lady.” This sentence appeared constantly and was the most famous line in the movie; it eventually became the standard to judge if Eliza had succeeded. This video has continued my concern toward the impact of the post-colonial phenomenon on the individual and cultural identity crisis. This is also my second work inspired by the classic 70’s movie “My Fair Lady.”

This time I would like to present more directly, the parts in the movie that were deliberately beautified – the pains and struggles faced in the process of transformation. I found pre-sessional (a pre-Master’s English class, student’s that language grades did not fulfill entry requirements must pass the course before gaining official school entry) students and their instructors to film because these students that just arrived in England were just starting to face the clash between different cultural systems and self-identity. I attempted to reproduce how Professor Higgins trained Eliza in the movie. In the film, each student had a sheet of paper that was printed with “The Rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.” After the students read the sentence aloud, the professor would repeatedly correct the student’s pronunciation and articulation problems. In the final work, I removed the professor’s training process, and only showed the students repeating the line and making corrections, it is similar to NG footage in a movie, but no one can predict their performance in the next take.

Embarrassment, frustration, numbness, trying to pull oneself together, and frustration once again, reality is so cruel, we seem to clearly observe a transformation from being totally untrained to after training, but my question is what did we change in the end?

Screening of “Rivers and Tides”

Fri 22 Nov 2013, 6 pm

DOCLAB

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học

Ba Đình, Hà Nội

DOCLAB cordially invites you to the screening of the documentary “Rivers and Tides” by Thomas Riedelsheimer.

Documentarian Thomas Riedelsheimer shows us Andy Goldsworthy as he creates art in natural settings using natural materials such as driftwood, ice, mud, leaves, and stones. Goldsworthy comments on his “earthworks” and occasionally responds to off screen questions from Riedelsheimer while he painstakingly builds his outdoors sculptures. With some exceptions, such as a winding stone wall that he built in Mountainville, NY, Goldsworthy’s creations are intentionally mutable works.

We see how several of them fall apart, melt, or drift away due to exposure to the elements; we also see, for example, a complex structure of interconnected sticks collapse while Goldsworthy is still working on it.

Riedelsheimer takes us to Goldsworthy’s home in Penport, Scotland, and to a French museum, but the emphasis of the film is on observing Goldsworthy at work.

The film is in English with Vietnamese subtitle.

Free Entrance.

The screening is non-profit and aims for research and studies only.

SONY DSC

Austrian jazz-guitarist Harri Stojka began his career in 1970 together with Jano Stojka at the Arena in Vienna. Soon after that the young self-taught musician joined Karl Ratzer’s band “Gipsy Love” as bass player and realized himself as guitarist in Peter Wolf’s “Objectiv Truth Orchestra”. In 1978 he founded the “Harri Stojka Express”, which was the only Austrian band among acts like Jimmy Cliff, Eric Burden, Van Morrisson and Carlos Santana at the Open Air Festival at the “Wiener Prater”. Carlos Santana said backstage about Harri, “that’s how one should be able to play guitar”. This was followed by an invitation to legendary Jazzfestival Montreux, where Harri Stojka played alongside Larry Coryell at the “guitar summit”. This performance, played in front of expert audience, where also fellow world class musicians paid tribute to him, was the breakthrough for Harri. The LP “Live at Montreux” offers a nice recording of the beginning of this impressive world career.

Since then Harri Stojka has been turning into one of the most important Austrian jazz musicians. Invitations to jazz festivals as headliner followed: Paris, Anger, Prague, London, Barcelona, New Delhi, New York, Syracuse, Montreux and Detroit. With Harri Stojka’s band European Jazz was heard for the first time in China and India. On all his travels he tells the fascinated audience about him being Austrian Roma and thus plays a part in Austria getting popular abroad. In 2006 “A Tribute To Swing” was re-released at ZOHO Music in New York. In Germany it was nominated for the German Music critics prize within only a week. With this project Harri Stojka and band gave two concerts at the Jazzfestival in Montreux, Kahmoro Festival, Sziget Festival Budapest, the famous Django Reinhardt Memorial Festival in Augsburg, Graz Jazz Festival and the jazz festivals in Jakarta and Yogjjakarta.

HARRI STOJKA 3

Harri Stojka has achieved something many would wish for – creating his own guitar style and being recognized as Harri Stojka after only a few notes played. What makes Harri Stojka unique is the mixture of virtuosity and blues feeling, the special drive, phrasing and sound of his gipsy jazz acoustic guitar. His home can be found in many music styles, from pop to avant-garde jazz, from gipsy to be-bop, from hard rock to heavy metal. Through his diversity and the consistent further development of his music, Harri Stojka has influenced many Austrian guitarists and always supports young musicians.

Free tickets can be collected from Tue 19 Nov 2013 at 2 pm at the Goethe-Institut and from Thu 21 Nov 2013 from 9:00 to 16:00 at Austrian Embassy and will be handed out on a first come first serve basis at:

Exhibition “I Live Green”

Opening: Thu 21 Nov, 3.30 pm

Exhibition: 21 Nov – 14 Dec 2013

Vietnam Women’s Museum

36 Lý Thường Kiệt, Hà Nội

In the context of global climate change and the exhaustion of the world’s natural resources, empowering people to live more sustainably is meaningful and practical work. To recognise the efforts of members of Green Living teams towards a sustainable lifestyle, Action for the City has cooperated with the Vietnam Women’s Museum to hold the exhibition ‘I Live Green’.

The photographs and objects will show the cooperation of an Irish and Vietnamese NGO in supporting urban citizens to live green through the project “Neighbourhood Empowerment in Hanoi”. The photographs taken by Paul Zetter record daily life activities of the members of Green Living teams in Hanoi and Hoi An that significantly contribute to saving resources, reducing garbage and raising awareness with their neighbours. With more than 5000 households in Hanoi, Danang, Hoi An and over 2000 households in Ballymun, Dublin, Ireland, the Green Living movement is connecting individuals and communities in the two countries in their shared efforts to build sustainable urban communities.

As well as photographs and everyday objects, the exhibition will also display a greenhouse made from recycled bottles – a joint effort between Action for the City, architects Hoang Thuc Hao, Vu Xuan Son, Nguyen Van Au and volunteer students from the University of Civil Engineering. The greenhouse was adapted from a design by the community in Ballymun. All recycled bottles were collected by students and Green Living groups in Hanoi.

Sad and Beautiful World – Introduction on this Weekend’s Films

Spotlight on the next batch of films from SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD festival – all screening at Hanoi Cinematheque this weekend.

MATTHEW’S LAWS (2012)

Dutch – with subtitles in Vietnamese and English

20.30 – 16/11 – Hanoi Cinematheque

15.00 – 23/11 – TPD

Director Marc Schmidt films his childhood friend Matthew, who, due to his autistic disorder, desperately tries to create order in the chaos around him. Schmidt follows him close to the heart. Explosive confrontations with the outside world are alternated with stylized observations and personal confessions. Little by little the film unravels Matthew’s complex way of thinking and shows the catastrophic consequences it eventually has for him.

AS I WAS MOVING AHEAD OCCASIONALLY I SAW BRIEF GLIMPSES OF BEAUTY (2000)

285 mins

English – with Vietnamese subtitles

14.30 – 16/11 – Hanoi Cinematheque

“As I Was Moving Ahead… is a record of subtle feelings, emotions, daily joys of people as recorded in the voices, faces and small everyday activities of people I have met, or lived with, or observed — something that I have been recording for many years. This, as opposed to the spectacular, entertaining, sensational, dramatic activities which dominate much of the contemporary film-making” (Jonas Mekas)

“Peter Kubelka once said of his friend, ‘Jonas has realised that, whatever paradise there is, it should be here and now. Loving care is a key to it.’ As I Was Moving Ahead is a loving portrait of Mekas’ early family life, a song of beauty and a testament to the possibility of Paradise. Appropriately, Mekas concludes the film in song, accompanied by his tireless accordion:

I do not know where I am, and going to, where I am coming from. I have seen some beauty. Glimpses of beauty and happiness. Yes, la beauté. And it is still beautiful in my memory. And it is real, as real as this film.” (Senses of Cinema)

I AM BREATHING (2013)

73 mins

English – with Vietnamese subtitles

16.30 – 17/11 – Hanoi Cinematheque

I AM BREATHING reminds us what it is to be alive – a tale of fun and laughs with a smattering of upset and devastation.

Within a year, Neil Platt goes from being a healthy 30-something British bloke with a great sense of humour to becoming completely paralysed from the neck down, thanks to the devastating illness he has inherited

Knowing he only has a few months left to live, and while he still has the ability to speak, Neil puts together a letter and memory box for his baby son Oscar and communicates his experience and thoughts about life in a blog – and in this film which he was determined to make. The directness of his communication mingles with images of the sensory details of a life well lived, and makes us revalue the ordinary.

SAD & BEAUTIFUL WORLD: A Secret Screening

Tue 19 Nov 2013, 8.30 pm

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

As part of SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD film festival, The Onion Cellar and manzi are delighted to present: A SECRET SCREENING!!! An event in which the only way to find out what exactly we are screening – is to be there.

What is that all about? And the concept behind it?

There is no concept, really.

We just (wholeheartedly) believe that expectation is overrated, that the world needs a bit more pleasant surprises, that once in a while people should come to a screening having absolutely no idea what is going to happen, free from all the storms of blurbs normally thrown their way (yes, we would be the first to acknowledge our guilt).

Wouldn’t it be refreshing? Wouldn’t it be nice?

And above all, trust us (and our taste), this will be an evening full of laughters – laughters in the face of….

(SPOILER – just a tiny one here. Forgive us)

..death.

Fundraising Event: Screening “Rescue a North Korean Refugee”

Sun 17 Nov 2013, 7 pm

The Hanoi Bicycle Collective

44, lane 31 Xuan Dieu Str, Hanoi

Hi, I’m Chris, LiNK’s International Nomad. For the next year, I’m riding my bicycle 14,000 miles from Thailand to Turkey to raise funds to rescue North Korean refugees. I hope to raise $1 per mile, or $14,000 total; more than enough to rescue 5 refugees. While on the road, I’ll be giving screenings of LiNK’s documentaries at hostels, cafes, and organic farms; anywhere and to anyone who will watch with me All funds donated through my page go straight towards refugee rescues; none of it goes to me or to LiNK’s other programs. If I can raise $14,000 over the next year, 5 North Korean refugees will have started a new, freer life in either South Korea or the USA.

Liberty in North Korea (LINK)

Every year, thousands of North Koreans risk their lives to escape political persecution and economic hardship. If caught trying to escape or caught in China and sent back, they are at risk of extremely harsh punishments, including brutal beatings, forced labor, forced abortions, torture, and internment in a political prison camp. To make matters worse, while hiding in China their illegal status forces them to work in invisible industries and leaves them vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous employers and sex traffickers, as they have no recourse to any authorities. Although many refugees try to escape, many do not have the resources or connections to get themselves out of China.

Free entrance.

Sad and Beautiful World: A Film Festival

15 – 24 Nov 2013

Hanoi

Inspired by and named after a Sparklehorse song, SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD is an underground film festival that celebrates life in all its hardships and wonders and ‘brief glimpses of beauty’.

We will be screening 13 films spanning various styles, lengths and subject matters: depression, autism, schizophrenia, suicide, natural disasters, uncertainty, death, etcetera. But at the same time, there is, as there will always be, hope, peace, freedom, and love, and beauty.

Sort of like how a musician who shot himself in the heart after suffering from endless bouts of depression was also someone who wrote, in our humble opinion, the most beautiful songs ever – sad songs still, but sad music somehow seems to have an uplifting aspect to it. The comforting knowledge that we are never alone: in a different time and place, someone has lived through similar experiences, and now passes their stories on through artistic creations.

No doubt that was the case with Mark Linkous, his music and words his exorcism, conjuring up surreal imageries that manage to feel personal and strangely universal at the same time: of long-gone childhood, dogs that eat birthday cakes, hair that smells like sunshine, bees who die at sea, skinny wolves, owls, cows, pigs, the moon, horse’s heads, diamond eyes, necklaces of leaves, hearts of darkness…

It is a trap one could fall into, but we are in no way trying to romanticise all the negativity in life. With SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD we hope to make people become more aware of things which maybe they have not really tried to understand. To challenge the taboos, especially the taboos on mental illness, and to help those for whom life has not been exactly easy. It may sound like a horrible cliché (and talking about cliché is also a cliché in itself, so go figure), but one thing we really believe in, is this: arts can heal.

In a way, this is also our exorcism.

JAPAN IN A DAY (2012)

Philip Martin & Gaku Narita

91 mins

Japanese – with subtitles in Vietnamese and English

20.00 – 15/11 – Hanoi Cinematheque

14.30 – 17/11 – Hanoi Cinematheque

Sunday 11 March 2012 marked the first anniversary of the catastrophic Great East Japan Earthquake. The most powerful earthquake ever to strike Japan caused immeasurable damage not only to the stricken areas, but also to the nation as a whole. To commemorate the tragedy, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions and Fuji TV collaborated on a project inspired by Kevin McDonald’s Life in a Day, asking people across Japan to pick up a camera and capture something about their day. What shines through are the thoughts, feelings and hopes that the remembrance of this terrible event inspired. The filmmakers fashioned this moving, eloquent testament from more than 8000 films shot by contributors from 12 different countries and uploaded onto YouTube. (BFI)

There’s a sense we are seated on one of Japan’s bullet trains as it speeds through the countryside, giving us blurred glimpses of marathon runners, downhill skiers, sparrows being fed and high-spirited teenagers goofing around on city streets.

A Buddhist monk chants sutra in a temple, an apology from humanity to nature. An elderly couple pick through the reduced-to-rubble house of the woman’s missing best friend, while another man notes that spring’s cherry blossoms are still beautiful. (Hollywood Reporter)

SOUND TO MUSIC (2010)

Tomoyuki Hattori

90 mins

Japanese – with subtitles in Vietnamese and English

14.30 – 24/11 – Red Room @ HRC

SOUND TO MUSIC is a documentary about the Japanese OTO ASOBI project.

OTO ASOBI consists of 16 people with learning disabilities and their families, about 20 artists from various fields, and music therapists. Individuals with learning disabilities include autism, Down syndrome, Williams syndrome and so on, whose ages range from 8 to 42. They collaborate freely with artists such as free improvisers, pop musicians, butoh dancers, and installation artists. Over 50 guest artists have been involved so far to create new performances. Parents of the people with learning disabilities are also important members who make their own music using cardboard boxes, kitchen utensils, and even hoovers.

“I came to know about OTO ASOBI only very recently, and yet this little intriguing project immediately garnered a great deal of my interest and respect, for its beautiful objective, its humanity, and its tireless efforts in trying to bring an idea not the easiest to realise, into the realm of reality.

Having certain past experiences with individuals with learning difficulties, I am aware of how tricky it must have been to gather all these idiosyncrasies into even the least resemblance to a unit, let alone one that is supposed to play music together, in sonic harmony of an improvisational nature.

Furthermore, how well would the professional musicians get along with the kids? Would the two groups play equal roles in the ensemble, or would the latter simply be dragged along the former’s artistic trails? Would the project be able to achieve its aim of discovering a new language of musical expression?

Happy to report, they succeeded. It is difficult not to be moved by the enthusiasms of all involved. And when came the days of the public performances the whole group were working towards, it was truly a pleasure to witness such coming-together of minds and souls – no distance found between kids, musicians, volunteers, parents, and music’s profound power of connecting people championed, once again.” (Hung Tran)

Screening of “Street Vendors”

Tue 26 Nov 2013, 7.30 pm

Hanoi Cinematheque

22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội

Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) would like to present to its members the screening of “Street Vendors” – produced by Rolf Jensen with support from the Vietnamese Woman’s Museum in Hanoi

The three films of “ Streets Vendors “ features the voices and stories of a group of rural women in Vietnam, who leave their children and husbands at home and go to Hanoi to work as street vendors.

The first film: “Their voices” features nine women speaking to two different audiences. Their first message is to the foreign audience that understands little about who they are, where they come from and why they do the job they do. Their second message is to the Vietnamese audience that largely sees the street vendors as a nuisance, who they feel come to the city only when they have nothing better to do at home.

The two remaining films focus on two very touching stories of two street vendor women – Ms. Thuy and Ms. Loi.

Thuy’s story tells us of her difficulties she faces while working in a city that is largely hostile to the presence women like her, the pressure from the police and customers who mistrust and look down on her.

Loi’s story is about a 56 years old woman whose husband died years ago and she has been struggling to get out of poverty her entire life. Living in bad conditions in Hanoi to save money she stills worry about her married daughter and family.

Vietnamese with English subtitles and run time is 56 minutes.

Concert: Silence Teaches You How To Sing

Thu 14 Nov 2013, 8 pm

Hanoi Rock City

27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho

ASPIDISTRAFLY : ambient folk duo from Singapore

JRG_ONE : cassette-tape-based live set

SEBASTIEN GESELL : quiet minimalism DJ set

YOU: talkless, shoeless, floor-sitting, mind-cleansing, being

In which The Onion Cellar challenges you to not utter a single word. To be at peace with your silence.

Definitely not an ordinary event, as proved by the first edition back in August, SILENCE has more in common with the teachings and practices of meditation. A silent retreat for the iPad generation, accompanied by beautiful, abstract and non-intrusive visuals and sounds.

One strict rule applies throughout the evening, at all times and not only while the artists are performing: once you have entered the Red Room (which, for the occasion, would be transformed to resemble more its namesake h

ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING ALLOWED.

That means, no ‘hello’ and ‘how’s it going’, no making acquaintances, no exchanging phone numbers, no finding out you two live on the same street, no flirting, no discussing arts and English football and Murakami and the war on terrorism. That means having a decent (and potentially transcendental) ‘night out’ without all the things you take for granted.

It might seem ironic to provide sound and visual accompaniment at an event partly inspired by John Cage’s (masterpiece) 4’33 – but we believe the warm texture, voice and acoustic guitar sounds from the excellent ambient folk duo ASPIDISTRAFLY, the hauntingly delicate sounds and abstract analogue visuals from JRG_ONE, and the super-rare minimalism DJ set from SEBASTIEN GESELL, will be the perfect vehicles for your ascent to galaxies afar.

REMEMBER: SHOES OFF AND OUTSIDE, PLEASE. ENJOY THE CANDLELIGHTS.

From Singapore, ASPIDISTRAFLY consists of composer and vocalist April Lee (b.1984) and producer Ricks Ang (b.1980) – both also being founders of Kitchen. Label.

The duo play a flickeringly filmic mixture of ambient folk with gossamer-like vocal harmonies and guitar-based drone wrapped in a delicate lo-fi haziness. April’s beguiling visions and lyrics form the backbone of ASPIDISTRAFLY‘s storytelling.

ASPIDISTRAFLY released their debut EP The Ghost of Things in 2004, followed by first full-length album I Hold a Wish for You in 2008 which gained much recognition and attention around Japan and Asia. In December 2011, they released their second album A Little Fable, recorded in autumn/winter 2010 in Japan in collaboration with several kindred spirits (Haruka Nakamura, Junya Yanagidaira (ironomi), Akira Kosemura, Janis Crunch and more).

Fascinated by the patina of time and themes of folklore, A Little Fable narrates a surrealist procession of tales, twelve compositions simmering one into the other lyrically and picturesquely. This album sees the duo returning to a warm, organic palette of closely-whispered vocals (which see April’s distinctly smoky and melancholic tone compared to Vashti Bunyan and Linda Perhacs), fingerpicked guitar, string arrangements and their trademark texture-focused arrangements.

In Landscape with a Fairy, a tale of loss and longing during the earliest dawn mist – the world in its daily transition – is daubed in the hues of intensified sunlight, foliage or shadows, only to be diffused and faded by time, not unlike Andrei Tarkovsky’s polaroids of the Russian countryside. April Lee’s intimate vocals and acoustic guitar gently break the silence of a cold morning, backed by graceful string flourishes arranged by Kyo Ichinose. Kitchen. Label’s very own Haruka Nakamura and Junya Yanagidaira (ironomi) add harmonizing colors of the guitar and piano respectively.

JRG_ONE’s previous live appearances in Hanoi saw his woven sonic textures crafting a delicate (yet equally haunting) take on experimental music.

For the second installment of SILENCE TEACHES YOU HOW TO SING, he has crafted a set which ditches the standard laptop setup and instead makes use of prepared audio cassette tapes and numerous tape players fed through a mixer and live sampler. What better complement to rare silence in the digital age than subtle strains of pure analog tape hiss, punctuated by the sound of tape heads engaging with the push of clunky PLAY and STOP buttons?

What’s on the tapes? A whole host of fuzzed-out synthesizer sequences, mellow drones, sound effects, ambient field recordings, voices from the ether, and likely some sounds that will surprise even the artist himself, all of them awash in warm, beautiful “tape tone.” The resulting blanket of sound will rise and fall in waves that are looped, layered, pitch shifted and fed through various effects, all while being complemented by live ethereal vocal sampling and snippets of short-wave radio static. There will be no pre-determined play order to the massive pile of tapes laid out for the set, so close your eyes and ride the hissssssss…

Sebastien Gesell's moon musick DJ set - Set DJ 'nguyệt ca' của Sebastien Gesell

Back on the Silence stage due to popular demand and the wonderful feedback he received for the set in August

SEBASTIEN GESELL has always been one helluva versatile DJ, and while this very special set of quiet minimalism music he will showcase on the night could not be more different from the tunes he usually throws at Hanoian ravers, it will be just as trance-inducing.

Saving Little Thuy

Painting conservator Caroline Fry returns to Vietnam.

The weight of responsibility to save a national art treasure from the ravages of time must be great but this is what Australian painting conservator Caroline Fry took on with the restoration of Tran Van Can’s painting ‘Em Thuy’ (1943) in 2004. For four months in Hanoi she surveyed every millimetre, every brush stroke, groove and crack of the canvas and then applied a combination of science and great conservation skill to save ‘Em Thuy’ from the accumulation of sixty years of humidity, dust, poor storage, light, over-painting, gecko excreta, pollution and degradation. For her efforts the Vietnamese Government presented her with a medal for ‘contributions to the preservation of Vietnamese art.’ and through the force of her personality and passion for people, art and restoration she also helped create a new culture of care and expertise at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Art in Hanoi, which meant she left behind much more than a restored painting.

So now almost 10 years later Caroline has returned to Vietnam on holiday to reconnect with old friends and to ‘check up on her little girl’. You can’t spend that much time with a beautiful object and not let it somehow permeate your soul and it’s clear that Caroline’s relationship with ‘Em Thuy’ goes deep but is very positive. When you restore a painting you also uncover and relive the past, with every scrape of the scalpel trying to understand and harmonise with the artist’s original intentions, materials and historical context. The conservation process over the four months in 2004 was very public as the Vietnamese art world closely scrutinised every development, but for Caroline it was also intensely personal as she worked day and night in microscopic detail to save the painting. It was a moment of intense pride for all involved when the restored work was shown at the end of Caroline’s time here and ‘Em Thuy’ herself, now an old lady, came for the unveiling.

For Caroline, now so much time has passed, her reflections are more personal and less technical as the inscrutable innocent little girl looks back at her. ‘I’ve grown and aged in the intervening years but she’s stayed the same’ she observes, ‘so like Keats’ Ode On A Grecian Urn;

When old age shall this generation waste,

Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe

my reflections are now less about myself as conservator but as a lover of art. Now I can truly appreciate the painting on its own terms’.

Thou still unravish’d bride of quietness!

Thou foster-child of silence and slow time

So what’s left for Caroline ten years since the restoration are old friends at the museum, a love of Vietnam and memories of an emotional four month rescue operation to save a little girl who holds a place in a nation’s heart. It’s not traditional to credit individual conservators on such projects but in Caroline’s case it doesn’t matter, she left her mark by restoring the artist’s and her passion is reflected in the painting’s renewed patina.

Go!Go!★Japan! Rock Concert 2013

Sat 16 Nov 2013, 6.30 pm

Van Ho Exhibition Centre

02 Hoa Lu Street, Hanoi

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam and Rockpassion.vn proudly present an exciting night with the cutting-edges of Japanese and Vietnamese rock bands, “Go! Go! Japan! Rock Festival 2013” held in Van Ho Exhibition Center (2 Hoa Lu, Hanoi) on Saturday 16 November 2013, kicking off at 18:30.

OKAMOTO’S, a young Japanese rock star in high demand globally, comes back to Hanoi to celebrate the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013. Made up of four 22-year-olds from Tokyo, this psychedelic garage rock band radiates youthfulness via the passionate performance of the vocal, Sho Okamoto, backed up with highly skillful musicians, Koki Okamoto (guitar), Reiji Okamoto (drums), and Hama Okamoto (bass), who recently signed an endorsement contract as a first Japanese bassist with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, one of the leading instrument makers of the US.

One of the new faces from Japan for Vietnamese music fans is THE TON-UP MOTORS, a “rock’n soul” band from Hokkaido, the northern end of Japan. Having attracted a large number of audiences from north to south in Japan, by overwhelming live performances with straightforward Japanese lyrics and melodies based on black music (i.e., soul, funk, blues, etc.), this four-piece powerful band finally makes a debut outside of Japan, here in Vietnam.

The first “Go! Go! Japan! Rock Festival” was held in December 2011 in Hanoi to promote the rejuvenation of Japan in the aftermath of the 3.11 disaster and celebrate the on-going solidarity between Japan and Vietnam, resulting in approximately 2,000 audience’s wild enthusiasm on the performances by Japanese and Vietnamese rock bands, including OKAMOTO’S.

In response to the ongoing calls for an encore, “Go! Go! Japan! Rock Festival 2013” is finally realized thanks to the 40th anniversary of Vietnam – Japan diplomatic relations.

This year’s festival will be kicked off by Thuy Trieu Do, a long-established Vietnamese heavy metal band who celebrates the 10th anniversary of their active performances since 2003. Based in Hanoi, they have been energetically appearing on numerous numbers of festivals both inside and outside of Vietnam, including Rock Storm, Tiger Translate, and Rock Typhoon Yamaha to name but a few.

(From left to right) Nguyen Hong Vy (Guitar Lead), Nguyen Linh (Drum), Le Son (Vocal), Pham Khanh Duong (Keyboard), Le Quang Hung (Guitar Bass)

Another delight from Vietnam is Oringchains, the winner of “The Tiger Translate Battle of the Bands 2012”. Formed in 2009, this versatile modern rock band, covering various rock styles ranging from alternative, nu metal to rap core, has rapidly won the heart and mind of music goers in Vietnam. Combining popular rock with electric effect (DJ), their music provides the audience a new, powerful yet enjoyable musical experience.

(Left) Tetsushi Hiroyama (Right) YAPAN

Last but not least, RYUKYUDISKO, a techno unit of twin brothers from Okinawa, the southern end of Japan, will be the enhancer of the festival by offering danceable tunes in two sessions, one featuring Okinawan style, the other featuring techno style at the end of the festival. They will surely enthuse you, until midnight, with their unprecedented techno music blended with Okinawan sounds to make this special rock night memorable.

The festival will be advanced by MC Thuy Trang, a young female presenter gifted with both wits and beauty and the host of a popular fashion TV program “Fashion & Style” on Hanoi TV, to link the audience to the all above five bands from Japan and Vietnam in a friendly and communicative manner.

“Go! Go! Japan! Rock Festival 2013” is held in Van Ho Exhibition Center (2 Hoa Lu, Hanoi) on Saturday 16 November 2013, kicking off at 18:30. Get the free tickets at the following spots to be entitled to enjoy the “Don’t miss” event of the year for all music and dance fans.
