Screening of “Ashes of Time” and “Swordsman II”

Screening of “Ashes of Time”: Fri 28 Mar 2014, 7.30 pm

Screening of “Swordsman II”: Sat 29 Mar 2014, 2 pm

Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents

51 Tran Hung Dao Str (4th floor), Hanoi

You are invited to the screening of 2 Hongkong wuxia films this weekend “Ashes of Time” and “Swordsman II”. Both of them cannot illustrate the whole picture but somewhat

portray the wuxia film genre in the early 90s at Hongkong.

Original language with Vietnamese subtitles. The screening is for educational purpose and supportive to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

Ashes of Time

Ashes of Time is a 1994 Hong Kong film written and directed by Wong Kar-wai, and loosely based on four characters from Jin Yong’s novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes.

Wong completely eschews any plot adaptation from the novel, using only the names to create his own vision of an arguably unrelated film. During the film’s long-delayed production, Wong produced a parody of the same novel with the same cast titled The Eagle Shooting Heroes.

Although it received limited box office success, the parallels Ashes of Time drew between modern ideas of dystopia imposed on a wuxia film has led many critics to cite it as one of Wong Kar-wai’s most under-appreciated works.

In 2008, Wong re-edited and re-released the film under the title Ashes of Time Redux that presents a shorter cut. The redux version is at the moment the only good-quality edition available on the market (theatres and home video).

Swordsman II

Swordsman II, also known as The Legend of the Swordsman, is a 1992 Hong Kong wuxia film very loosely adapted from Louis Cha’s novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. It

was the second part of a trilogy: preceded by The Swordsman (1990) and followed by The East is Red (1993). Directed by Ching Siu-tung and Stanley Tong, Swordsman II starred Jet Li, Brigitte Lin, Rosamund Kwan and Michelle Reis in the leading roles.

Talk Show: In Search of the Lost Beliefs

Thu 27 Mar 2014, 7.30 pm

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Continuing our most-adored monthly talk-show RIGHT OR WRONG?, manzi is bringing you a very interesting discussion entitled “In Search of the Lost Beliefs”.

These days, one of the most common phrases is “The citizens have lost their beliefs”, along with such warnings as “He who loses money, loses much; He who loses health, loses much more; He who loses belief, loses all”.

Try googling the phrase “lost belief”, you will get 11.6 million results (to compare, “Ngoc Trinh” only comes out with 1.8 million results). What’s happening? It’s of no doubt that after two decades we’ve been much richer, but along with prosperity, the world seems to get colder. In a world that seems to be emotionless and lack of niceness day by day, the senior is pessimistic, the youth is lost, what can we rely on? What else can bring us strength and steadiness? Which is the way to find back the lost beliefs and lead to happiness?

At Manzi talk in March, MC Giang Đặng and guests will invite you to a discussion about the values and ideas in life, about the role of money and love, about the ties of tradition and family, about doubt, and about beliefs.

Guests:

Đỗ Tuấn Hải (1990): Model, MC, owner of a fashion shop and a cafe

Khúc Hải Vân (1982): Knight of Vietnamese IT, Vice Director of IT centre ‘Tia Sang’

Nhật Linh (1992) writer

PLEASE NOTICE: The talk will be conducted in Vietnamese only.

Due to limited capacity, please pre-register at [email protected] before 8.00pm, Tues 25 Mar 2014

Screening of Japanese Film “Hausu” (House)

Thu 27 Mar 2014, 8.30 pm – 10.30 pm

Madake

81 Xuan Dieu, Hanoi

HAUSU (HOUSE) (1977)

88′ / Dir – Nobuhiko Obayashi

Japanese, with English subtitles

“The cutest nightmare you ever did see..

Seven schoolgirls on holidays encounter a malevolent force in an isolated old mansion.

As this entity picks them off, one by one, the survivors struggle to unearth a mystery which stretches back decades..”

“How to describe Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 movie House?

As a psychedelic ghost tale? A stream-of-consciousness bedtime story? An episode of Scooby Doo as directed by Dario Argento?..

Too absurd to be genuinely terrifying, yet too nightmarish to be merely comic, House seems like it was beamed to Earth from another planet.”

Interactive Exhibition “Get in Touch with Mathematics”

Opening: Wed 26 Mar, 10 am

Exhibition: 26 Mar – 12 Apr 2014, 9 am – 7 pm

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học

From 26 March until 12 April 2014, Goethe-Institute Hanoi will host the exhibition “Get in Touch with Mathematics”. The exhibition displays an exciting selection of the most appreciated exhibits from the first interactive mathematics museum in the world, the “Mathematikum” in the German town of Giessen. Opening of the exhibition is on 26 March, 10 a.m.

The exhibition “Mathematik zum Anfassen” – “Get in touch with mathematics” aims to create a new approach towards mathematics. It depicts the supposedly most abstract of all the sciences in a manner that can be understood by the senses and makes mathematics comprehensible – for all age groups and without any preparatory training.

But what exactly is involved in this new approach? All our experiments bank on a playful approach to mathematics. They are unswervingly thought provoking and amazing: One is inspired to ask oneself “Why is this so?”, and finds the first answers for oneself and thus finds the significance of the phenomena. It involves grasping with hand, head and heart. Visitors of all ages and all educational backgrounds experiment: They solve puzzles, build bridges, break their heads while unraveling riddles, watch a sphere race, let wonderful soap bubbles come into being – and while doing so, they are always incidentally involved with mathematics.

Goethe-Institute supported by the German Federal Foreign Office is in uncharted waters with this interactive exhibition. And thus, very happy to have a renowned partner for this project: The “Mathematikum” (www.mathematikum.de) in the German town of Giessen is the first interactive mathematics museum in the world. “Get in Touch with Mathematics” displays an exciting selection of the most appreciated experiments from the museum in Giessen, where one is invited to try out and think over more than 160 exhibits. Since it was opened ten years ago, around 1.5 million visitors have come to visit.

Free Entrance.

Mexican wave reached its peak in period 2006-2007 with Pan’s Labyrinth, Children of Men and Babel.

About films

CHILDREN OF MEN

CHILDREN OF MEN is a 2006 dystopian science fiction film co-written, co-edited and directed by Alfonso Cuarón and based loosely on P. D. James’s 1992 novel The Children of Men.

In 2027, two decades of human infertility have left society on the brink of collapse. Illegal immigrants seek sanctuary in the United Kingdom, where the last functioning government imposes oppressive immigration laws on refugees. Clive Owen plays civil servant Theo Faron, who must help a pregnant West African refugee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) escape the chaos. CHILDREN OF MEN also stars Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Pam Ferris, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

BABEL

BABEL is a 2006 international drama film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga, starring an ensemble cast. The multi-narrative drama completes Iñárritu’s Death Trilogy, following Amores perros and 21 Grams. The film portrays multiple stories taking place in Morocco, Japan, and Mexico/U.S.A. It was an international co-production among companies based in France, Mexico, and the U.S.

The film was first screened at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, and was later shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. The name of the film was created initially by Pavneet Dhanoa’s misspelling of Nabeel Khalid’s original name. It opened in selected cities in the United States on 27 October 2006, and went into wide release on 10 November 2006.

On 15 January 2007, it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and two nominations for Best Supporting Actress and won for Best Original Score.

Thu 27 Mar 2014, 9 pm

Q4 / Cargo Bar

The young emerging artist Superpoze is a composer/beatmaker who has been recently praised by audience at Vieilles Charrues and Montreux music festivals. Inspired by Mondkopf, Bonobo and Mr Oizo, Superpoze gives electronic music another dimension, fetching its sounds in a strong musical culture, from jazz to hip-hop.

Aged 20, this young Frenchman from Caen released his first single in 2010 and in 2013, his first EP, “From the Cold”. There is already so much to say about his talent!

He spent 7 years in a music school first learning percussion, then looking towards electronic music and the beats where everything is to be created. On stage, behind his pads and keyboard, Superpoze creates his own tunes instinctively and grooves on beats and bass lines as original as they are effective. At ease as well in writing as remixing, he creates an instrumental hiphop with no boundary.

Superpoze also plays at L’Espace in Hanoi on 29 Mar.

“Hanoi Promenade” – Photo Show and Book Launch by Martin Rama

Book launch: Thu 20 Mar 2014, 6.30 pm

Photo showcase: 18 – 23 Mar 2014

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

What makes a city livable? At a time of rapid urbanization, experts struggle to find the magic formula; with limited success, judging on the results. But while many big cities in East Asia are becoming terribly ugly or terminally boring (sometimes both), Hanoi remains more than just livable: it is truly lovable.

The secret to this success may be more cooking recipe than scientific blueprint. As could be expected in a country with a great cuisine, Hanoi combines the right ingredients in ideal doses. Buildings in the most diverse architectural styles stand harmoniously next to each other. Quiet prayer and buzzing trade intermingle in surprising ways. Life unfolds on sidewalks during the day and passion blossoms on motorbikes at night. Leafy avenues inspired by the Enlightenment alternate with narrow alleys of unmistakable Asian flavor. Even the undeniable chaos is misleading, as it protects a delicate balance between transformation and preservation, allowing the social fabric to adapt rather than disappear.

Hanoi Promenade Book Cover

This book is an attempt to understand the formula that makes Hanoi exceptional. It conveys images and thoughts from endlessly wandering across her, listening to her, admiring her, from all possible angles. Through readings and food, from work and poetry, in friendship and celebration… Organized as a cooking guide in the spirit of a phở recipe, the book contains two dozen short chapters focusing on one ingredient each, trying to uncover its subtle contribution to the charm and character of Hanoi.

A visual “promenade” for the book will be held at Manzi for a week, with copies available for sale in both English and in Vietnamese. Screening of “Withnail and I”

Thu 20 Mar 2014, 8.30 – 10.30 pm

Madake

81 Xuan Dieu, Hanoi

You are invited to the screening of “WITHNAIL AND I” (1987, 108′, Directed by Bruce Robinson).

“Made in 1987, Withnail and I is a semi-autobiographical classic black comedy set in the end weeks of 1969″

“London. The 1960s. Two unemployed actors — acerbic, elegantly wasted Withnail and the anxiety-ridden “I” — drown their frustrations in booze, pills, and lighter fluid.

When Withnail’s Uncle Monty offers his cottage, they escape the squalor of their flat for a week in the country.

They soon realize they’ve gone on holiday by mistake when their wits — and friendship — are sorely tested by violent downpours, less than hospitable locals, and empty cupboards.

Bruce Robinson’s cult favorite is an intelligent, superbly acted, and hilarious film”

“It’s an eccentric journey through friendship, Englishness and the passing of time. It is also hilarious, packed full of quotes that are memorised and repeated by its loyal fans.”

“A trip worth taking”

Language: English with English subtitles.

Free entry. 10 free prints of an original illustration (based on the film) by Claire Driscoll.

Installation showcase: 19 – 23 Mar 2014 (2nd floor)

Artist talk: Wed 19 Mar 2014, 7 pm

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Images and languages are used as tools for human expression. They both are often being put together and sometime act as integral part of each other in order to bring multi-meanings & answers for an object.

Read the images and see the words, write a picture and draw and essay – we can call these the jobs of both art-makers and art-enjoyers. Read the images with words might be a fascinating way to break away from the images. Search for images in words can also be a nice suggestion to go beyond the words.

‘I will come to see you with a visual story’ will show to the audience the first part of Trần Trọng Vũ’s new art project, in which language and visual aspect are results of a series of extraordinary facts. This visit will also introduce other artworks of the project under the possible forms of literature and visual art.

Trần Trọng Vũ is a Vietnamese visual artist born in Hanoi, now lives and works in Paris. His work, beyond real aesthetics, reflects the obsession of the past, political and human derision. He paints on large transparent plastic sheets, then installs them in 3D version. The modes of presentation themselves maintain an ambiguous relationship with the viewers: Visitors should seek their path in the transparency between images, figures, colors, and behave as if they were on a stage. Vũ works on visual and psychological effects caused by the virtual maze of images… In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Grant in New York.

Free entry.

“Deliberation” Electronic Music Night with C-drík

Fri 21 Mar 2014, 8.30 pm

ATK

73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

Join us and celebrate the first day of spring — will it finally be the end of rain? — with an evening of sonic and visual rituals, featuring:

C-drík aka Kirdec — multi-facetted musician, composer, DJ, producing different music genres ranging from electro-acoustic music to minimal wave, digital punk to industrial, dark ambient to electronica, etc. He is or has been a member of dozens of projects, collaborating with uncountable artists from all backgrounds in his contant musical exploration of the World. Finally, he’s also Syrphe label owner, a label partly dedicated to alternative electronic and experimental music from Africa and Asia.

Music amateurs of Hanoi know that seeing local Lương Huệ Trinh play live is always a privilege, and a rare one — preferring quality and taste to quantity, she plays a very personal style of electronic music, plunging deep roots into Vietnamese traditions, only to find there the energy for adventures in contemporary musical explorations.

After years spent researching sound and music, Mathias Rossignol recently appeared in Hanoi’s music scene with the ambition of being a fully DIY musician: custom instruments, homemade software and personal field recordings combine to produce a truly unique sound.

And to finish making it a night to remember, The Onion Cellar will open the proceedings with a very special carefully-handpicked selection of music and videos.
