HCMC – Art Exhibition “Vol de Nuit – Night Flight”

Opening: Sat 30 Mar 2013, 6 – 8 pm
Exhibition: 30 Mar – 04 Apr 2013
HCMC Fine Arts Museum
97A Pho Duc Chinh, D1, HCMC

“VOL DE NUIT, NIGHT FLIGHT”, a collaborative art installation in a variety of mediums, featuring Daisuke Terashima (JP), Tran Minh Duc (VN), Nguyen Kim To Lan (VN) and Kawayan de Guia (PH/DE).

Vol De Nuit – Night Flight brings together four artists with their own unique methods, techniques, and media approaches into one shared exhibition space, aiming to push towards new horizons of exploration by creating an atmosphere where curiosities suspend our perceptions of reality.

Nguyen Kim To Lan’s photographs and paintings of clouds circumnavigate the exhibition space, literally creating an artificial horizon.

Daisuke Terashima’s multilayered experiments on paper emphasize the endless process of layering and erasing to create a tension between depth and flatness, echoing the deterioration and improvement of the natural order.

Kawayan de Guia references the radio-shaped, cement spittoons that were placed along the roads in his mountain city home in the 1950s so the betel-nut chewing enthusiasts from the surrounding villages would have a proper place to expectorate the blood-red remnants of their pass time (leaving the roads free and clean). People gathered around these radio-shaped boxes as if listening to the latest news, but of course there was no sound coming out… but what if there was?

Tran Minh Duc’s installation features a vintage parachute dyed in pink. It lies indolently like a dream. It has landed in a nameless place–it could be a moment in anyone’s memory, a dream land, or a weigh station in an endless journey of self-discovery. An artefact turned pink, soliciting memories of the past and a bright outlook for the future.

The currency of art, as with this exhibition, relies on curiosity. Their artworks succeed in the persistence of creating objects and works which make us curious and suspend our own inner curiosities.

Their artworks make use of the ordinary as a vehicle to fly from the familiar, the conventional, the known–a flight of fancy towards an enrichment of imagination.

These four artists create horizons. Their artworks invite us to perceive them as they are and as they are not. As horizons, they continue to remain necessarily distant from us, yet we are invited to speculate and approximate between these spaces, these distances that separate us. As they invite you to navigate the distances between ourselves and their artworks, so too do they invite you to navigate and experience the distances between art and life.

*Artist talks and Cooking: Daisuke Terashima (JP) and Nguyen Kim To Lan (VN); Kawayan de Guia (PH/DE) and Tran Minh Duc (VN) 2pm – 8pm March 24th/2013 @ Flying Art Space – B511, C/c Phạm Viết Chánh, Q. Bình Thạnh, Tp. HCM

LEAFCUTTER JOHN (UK)

Leafcutter John was brought to Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival 2013 thanks to the support from British Council Vietnam.

Yorkshire come London lad, John Burton has graced the planet with his remarkable contributions to electronic, folk and experimental music since his primary explorations with an old computer, originally bought to write his Art School dissertation in 1998. Since then he has released 5 critically acclaimed albums which combine elements of music-concrete and electro-acoustic music with voice and guitar work more commonly found in folk music. He has performed his award winning work extensively throughout Europe and Australasia and has performed on television and radio.

Currently John is in the Leaf-lab developing a Light controlled music interface, which opens up new avenues for laptop performers. Currently on it’s third prototype the system offers expressive and very responsive gestural control over sound generation.

Recently John composed the music for a major new production by Handspring, the pioneering puppetry company responsible for Warhorse which ran at the National Theatre before going on to the West End and Broadway. ‘Crow’ combines puppetry, dance, and music. It is based on the Crow poems by Ted Hughes and premiered at the 2012 London festival in May.

John is also a full time member of the Mercury Music Award nominated contemporary Jazz band Polar Bear, providing electronics, guitar, and vocals.

Horacio Pollard (UK)

Half English, half Argentine “noise-eccentric” HORACIO POLLARD has been active in the field of experimental music since 2002 and has released numerous vinyl, tape & CD releases on various international labels such as Wrong Musis (UK) & Altered Tape (DE). A member of noise rock bands  CLIFFORD TORUS and FULLY BLOWN DENTAL REFORM, he also runs his own label Neigh Music.

He has toured South America, Europe, Asia, Australia with acts such as Moha, DJ Scotch Egg, Torturing Nurse, Alan Courtis, Casper Brotzmann, Noxagt, Boredoms & Lightning Bolt.

‘The Desiring Garden’ in Hanoi

Opening: Fri 29 Mar, 6.30 pm
Artist’s Talk (tbc): Sat 14 Apr, 3 pm
Exhibition: 30 Mar – 30 Apr 2013
Manzi Art Space
14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Manzi art space presents the photography exhibition ‘The Desiring Garden’ showing a series of fascinating works by Jamie Maxtone-Graham, an American photographer based in Hanoi.

Produced within intensely urban Hanoi, Vietnam, the images in The Desiring Garden are the record of a place that exists between the projected and the perceived.

“The images in The Desiring Garden prey on the Western perception of the exotic; a Rousseau-like play on an environment – here, the urban center of Hanoi – in which certain indigenous species of plants, some items of human utility and sources of nourishment are presented together in some arrangement alongside people with an uncertain relationship to these objects”

The physical view of the people inhabiting the frame, observed within these embellished environments, is that of an outsider; of one who looks upon the scene – but not in – and, in turn, is unnoticed.’

Jamie Maxtone-Graham has a professional background of more than 20 years in commercial and narrative cinematography in New York and Los Angeles.  He became a Fulbright Fellow in 2007 when he moved to Hanoi where he currently lives.

His still photography has exhibited in London, Netherlands, Bangkok, France and Hanoi and has been published online at burn Magazine, Trans Asia Photography Review, Photography And Culture, tiny vices, Cultural Hall and other print and online publications.

Manzi’s art programme is supported by Hanoi Grapevine – our communications partner

Thor Heyderdahl (1914 – 2002) was an Norwegian anthropologist and explorer. Even when he was young, Thor revealed his love of expedition to test the hypothesis of anthropology. In 1947, Thor made his most famous voyage on a raft called the Kon-Tiki (God of Sun Inca, according to Peru Aboriginal) to prove that 1,500 years ago, the Inca people in Peru crossed the sea to settle in the islands of the South Pacific, not from Asia as in previous theories.

Departed from Peru, after 101 days on the sea, Thor’s group reached the target at Tuamotu Islands on 7 August 1947. The raft passed over 6,980 km, and proved that the natives of South America absolutely were able to make the same trip in the past.

The book records the trip called Kon-Tiki Journey by Thor has been translated into over 50 different languages, and Thor and the famous voyage has become the pride of Norway. During the voyage, Thor and his group also carried a 16mm -film camera to record the journey. The film later was produced by Thor himself and was named Kon-Tiki.

With Kon-Tiki, Thor continued to bring glory to the country with the Oscar award for best documentary film in 1951. Up to now, it is still the only Oscar achieved by Norwegian cinema.

Screening of “Kahara Has no Walls”

Wed 20 Mar 2013, 7 pm
The Hanoi Bicycle Collective
44, lane 31 Xuan Dieu Str, Hanoi

Come to the next session of Cinexin Hanoi this week with the screening of “Kahara Has no Walls”.

Yemen joined in with the protests immediately after the start of the Arab Spring. Unlike Egypt and Tunisia, however, the country’s authoritarian regime did not collapse but instead responded with violence. Consequently, the protests were followed by what in effect was a civil war that remains unresolved. The crucial date was 18 March, when a demonstration called the Friday of Dignity (Juma’at El-Karama) was held.
Plainclothes snipers blocked the street with a wall and fired into the crowd from behind this barrier and surrounding roofs. Fifty-three people died and up to a thousand were injured. Three young cameramen recorded the course of events on that day from the heart of the ill-fated demonstration. Consequently, this documentary shows the brutality of the crackdown at close proximity. This eloquent visual testimony is complemented by commentaries and interviews with survivors. Besides the shocking violence, the film also reveals the desperate determination of the civilians who literally put their own bodies on the line to take a stand against the bullets. The violence only consolidated their determination to protect human dignity and precipitate a broad wave of solidarity with the protesters throughout Yemen.

Free entry.

CDEF Announces Talent Prize 2013

Time for submission: 01 Mar – 31 Jul 2013

The Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF) of the Embassy of Denmark launch the Talent Prize Competition 2013. This year’s theme is Architectural Ideas for Improving Urban Spaces.

The Talent Prize 2013 is based upon the Danish architect Jan Gehl’s notion that an urban area is normally created by a set of buildings, and its real value lies in the spaces between those buildings. Buildings contribute to defining value and feature of the space. Characteristics of buildings in terms of usefulness, appearance, materials, colour, style or kind of openness and closeness, solidness or hollowness have large impacts on the value of public spaces.

In this competition, CDEF would like to represent a basic concept of urban planning: buildings are an instrument, but not a goal, of urban planning. The space between buildings, where communities actively exist is of greater importance.

Participants in the competition are architects, construction engineers, urban planners & landscape architects. Participants will choose a particular Vietnamese urban area, analyse the relationship between the buildings and the public space and propose a redesigning plan for the buildings by adding, deleting and/or changing the buildings to create more attractive public spaces.

In a comment, Danish Ambassador, John Nielsen, states, “The competition seeks to find original and creative architects and to promote projects that are innovative and contribute to improving public spaces in cities in Vietnam. We also want to initiate involvement from public in judging the importance of public places and the role of architecture in designing public activities in cities”.

The applications will be assessed by a Review Board including Danish Ambassador John Nielsen, Vietnamese architect Mr. Pho Duc Tung, Mr. Nguyen Huu Thai and Danish architect Hans Peter Hagens. The Jury Prize for the winner is a one-week visit to Denmark early 2014.

Additionally, a competition website will be available for the public to comment on and vote for the initiatives. The initiative receiving the highest votes will get the Audience Prize, valued at VND 10 million.

The Danish Vietnamese Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF) was established in 2006 with the aim to provide support to contemporary cultural performances in Vietnam and to cultural exchange activities between Denmark and Vietnam.  The Fund has supported more than 100 projects in Vietnam and Denmark since 2006 and organized 4 Talent Prize competitions for young Vietnamese artist within art sectors such as experimental music, contemporary dance, performance art and paintings.

Welcome to the music night with Jesers and the Trio. With experience performing on stage, Jesers, together with his trio, always brings full of energy and surprises to the audience.

Born in a family of musicians living in many places such as Praia, Dakar, London and New York, his passion for writing brought him to the art of coordinating words and rhythms in a natural way. With extensive experience of performing on stage (such as the music festival Le Printemps de Bourges, Les Francofolies de Montréal, Les Eurockeennes), or more overseas tours and in addition, performances with MC Solaar, Gad Elmaleh, Sergent Garcia or Renan Luce, Jesers, and his trio always bring energy and surprises to the show.

Deadline for registration and submitting works: 25 Feb
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc
Ba Đinh, Ha Noi

This workshop, combines theory and practice of photography, is to help students to discover how to look and sense the images; learn the meaning of the implementation of works and how to read the photographic work.

In the workshop, participants will 1) actively and regularly review the work of the artist photographer and film in the world, 2) self-made personal studies and research then present them in the workshop on their own and 3) implement of an independent personal work based on the idea of the workshop for a group exhibition.

We will review the work of photographers such as Hiroshi Sugimoto, Robert Frank, William Eggleston (and some filmmakers: Chris Marker, Gia Truong Kha, Nicolas Philibert) then consider their ideas about the still, the concept, layout and how to communicate via visual form.

During the workshop, participants will make their personal projects – either in photography or film – to make a group exhibition. The theme of the exhibition will be determined by the student and the instructor – photographer Jamie Maxtone-Graham, but the main idea of the workshop – mainly on idea, vision và visual language and its operation.

To register, you need to create and submit on time a series of photos on request: 5-7 photographs on the theme “Self – portrait” with a short statement about the work. Registration records will be selected primarily based on creativity, ideas and efforts, not the technical evaluation. You can submit photos or video files. English speaking is not required (however it would be more favorable if you can speak English). The class will consist of 10 students.

Workshop is free to attend.
