Screening of “Crossroads: Between Vietnam and Mongolia”

Thu 14 Mar 2013, 8.30 pm
ATK
73 a Mai Hac De

You are invited to the screening of Perrine Le Roy’s Crossroads: Between Vietnam and Mongolia. Crossroads is a silent exploration of the daily life of both countries: from emptiness to crowds, family relationships and the everyday expressions of religion to attitudes to work. Rather than being a comparison between cultures, the film instead represents a melting pot; from a Vietnamese cyclo-driver to a Mongolian shaman’s spirit ritual, Perrine’s film brings cultures closer together.

The film will be accompanied by a live score from three talented Vietnamese musicians.

Nguyen Quynh Chi won second prize at the international Accordion Competition in Reinach, Switzerland, which means she can play a bit. In Hanoi, she can often be found playing at L’Espace’s musettes and cafés around the capital.

Vocals will be provided by Dinh Lan, singer with French-Vietnamese band, Puzzle. She’s a regular at L’Espace’s montly Cabaret event singing a selection of Vietnamese, French and Spanish songs.

Completing the line-up is Nguyen Thuy Dung. Dung has started to make a name for herself through her genre-defying collaborations. Whether playing with African musicians, creating free-form experimental improvisations or filling floors alongside international DJs, Dung is constantly pushing the boundaries of what the traditional Dan Tranh can do.

The event will also feature a screening of Hanoi DocLab’s cult documentary, Hard Rails across a Gentle River. Through the observances of four filmmakers, a mosaic of Long Bien life unfolds. Whether exploring communities of nudist bathers on Long Bien Island, female workers on city intersections or security guards patrolling the iconic bridge’s ancient rails, the film presents Long Bien as you’ve never seen it before. The end result is a gently unfolding documentary mosaic of difficult living, compassion and direct observations of life and culture in contemporary urban Vietnam.

Hue – Exhibition “Ancient Capital Energy”

Opening: Wed 13 Mar, 4.30 pm
Exhibition: 13 – 19 Mar 2013
New Space Arts Foundation
2nd Floor, Number 15 Le Loi, Hue City

Come to the exhibition ”Ancient Capital Energy”. The present exhibition in Hue is one such platform, giving emerging Vietnamese artists an excellent opportunity to share their ideas, dreams and achievements with the public in a formal setting. Further, presenting art in this environment gives artists a space to grow their voice which vibrates in unison with the rhythms of the rapidly developing country.

The artists included in this exhibition raise a wide range of themes and questions: they contemplate social change as well as shifting values, speak about traditions and the impact of development, explore the personal psyche and sources of spirituality, and touch upon the eternal issue of human existence…. Their topics inspire the audience to consider a broad spectrum of problems and their possible solutions.

This exhibition demonstrates the young generation’s keen interest in exploring new expressive territory and experimentation with media to establish a direct and frank dialogue with the audience. Beyond any doubt it’s a constructive platform for artistic utterance and a significant addition to Vietnam’s art infrastructure.

Screening of “Loin du Vietnam/ Far from Vietnam”

Fri 08 Mar 2013, 6 pm
DOCLAB
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội

Hanoi DocLab is pleased to present ”Far from Vietnam” by various French directors such as Chris Marker, Jean Luc-Godard.

Necessarily dated but still a fascinating document, this collective protest against the Vietnam war begins with a graceful ballet of bomb-loading and take-off preparations aboard an American carrier, contrasted with shots of civilians in Hanoi hurrying to pathetically inadequate improvised shelters.

Suspected Vietcong sympathisers are beaten up; peace marchers in America are confronted by counter-demonstrators shouting ‘Bomb Hanoi!’; General Westmoreland appears reassuringly on TV to state that ‘Civilian casualties do not resultfrom our firepower; they result from mechanical errors’. All good, stirring stuff, edited into a remarkably coherent whole by Chris Marker. But the film goes on to probe the ambiguity behind the protest. Inherent throughout (but explicitly explored in fictional interludes directed by Renais and Godard) is the dilemma that, although this was ‘the first war everyone can watch’ and all of us were involved, the very remoteness (in every sense) of the conflict carried inevitable obfuscations. There is a certain amount of navel-gazing here, but at least the film acknowledges the sense of impotent frustration shared by many in trying to decide what to do.

The screening is non-profit and aims for research and studies only.

The film is in French with Vietnamese subtitle only.

Screening of “TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay”

Wed 06 Mar 2013, 7 pm
The Hanoi Bicycle Collective
44, lane 31 Xuan Dieu Str, Hanoi

Come to the next session of Cinexin Hanoi this week with the screening of “TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay”.

OK, so we all know ThePirateBay and the majority of netizens have visited it on at least one occasion to share files. What do we really know about the Pirate Bay ? Not a lot it seems. I was luckily invited to see an advanced screening of this documentary. I expected it to be an interesting story. I got what I expected and more. The twists and turns of the reality of how The Pirate Bay was formed, how the authorities went after them and how much The Pirate Bay has affected the lives of so many people, is such an intriguing tale. I definitely recommend this film to all netizens as a 100% must watch film about our generation and at it’s core, our online culture and the attempts of the powerful to control the internet. Even if you are just a casual internet user who is mildly curious about internet culture, this is a must watch documentary. 10/10 because… gripping story that has never been told and doesn’t end up as you expected… is truly… “gripping story” - Jim Doyle @ IMDB

INVISIBLE LINES – Experimental Music Concerts

Hanoi: Wed 06 Mar 2013, 8 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, Hanoi

HCMC: Fri 08 Mar 2013, 8.30 pm
Darts Darts Darts
224A Pasteur – District 3, HCMC

THE ONION CELLAR proudly presents the Vietnam leg of the INVISIBLE LINES tour, pairing ARCN TEMPL and CHOD (side projects of The Observatory members) with local experimental artists in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. For sure, this will be an uncompromising affair, but pure transcendental beauty is bound to be found under the seemingly endless layers of sounds – sometimes intricately crafted and arranged, sometimes results of unadulterated improvisations.

One year (to the day!) after that unforgettable Onion Cellar showcase of Japanese noise assaults (http://bit.ly/wqUXKI), it is time to reaffirm that statement: We don’t care about music anyway.., we make (and promote) it – that’s all.

The events are organized in association with Hanoi Rock City (in Hanoi) and Sàn Art (in Ho Chi Minh City). Media partner: Hanoi Grapevine.

ARCN TEMPL is a side project of Leslie Low and Vivian Wang from The Observatory (Singapore), arguably one of Asia’s most adventurous bands. As ARCN TEMPL, Leslie and Vivian has been collaborating on numerous experimental cross-platform productions with both Singaporean and international artists, often subverting the norm of a rock arena type concert to perform in fittingly unique settings (such as playing live in a dark pentagonal room formed by screens while remaining invisible to the audience).

In 2010 the duo released their debut release Emanations of a New World through the US label Utech Records, recounting childhood memories surrounding a mythological theme park in Singapore called Haw Par Villa. The odd but colorful collection contains a strange mix of characters and familiar tales from Chinese mythology and folklore, mixed in with earthy depictions of modern life and the Chinese concept of hell. The mutual love and dread of the park is told over eight recordings. Voice, guitar, percussion and other traditional instrumentation weave a cloth of surreal bliss, eeriness and horror.

CHOD (Singapore)

Dharma (from The Observatory) and Shaun Sankaran (of Dream State Vision and MFB) make up the duo CHOD. The name comes from a Tibetan Buddhism practice meaning ‘cutting through the ego’ or ‘dissolving of the ego’. The duo combines spirituality, the art of ancient chants with analog and electronic noise which takes one back to early man, invoking the process of purification from within. CHOD was formed in July 2012 and have performed a few times in Singapore at Earthbound (an experimental music showcase initiated by Shaun and Dharma), notably one on the same bill with Norwegian noise artist Lasse Marhaug. At the moment they are in the midst of recording their debut album.

JRG_ONE’s previous live appearances in Hanoi saw his woven sonic textures crafting a delicate (yet equally haunting) take on experimental music. Prepared samples, field recordings, synth tones and sequences, live vocal looping and other sound sources are combined to create soundscapes that alternate between dark ambient drones and waves of ghostly, ethereal beauty, all set to a visual backdrop of slowly decaying analog videotape. Not unlike the sound design from a David Lynch movie.

DANIEL HENNEBERRY (UK/ Hanoi)

In the words of the visual philosopher Leigh J Mccloskey “I think everyone has experienced a creative feeling, when writing or drawing, and as soon as you try to put it into words it dissipates and disappears”. This feeling of losing something as soon as it is written down has led DANIEL HENNEBERRY to the field of improvised electronic music, championing spontaneity over formality. Primarily a guitar player in a number of Hanoian projects (Van Der Beard, Electronic Acupuncture, Now That The Ground Has Stopped Trembling) treading the common ground between folk, drone and shoegaze, Daniel uses a non laptop approach to his sonic soundscapes and instead opts for effects units to process sounds created from a range of sources.

MOETH (France/ Singapore/ HCMC)

MOETH is a two-piece drone/doom/experimental metal band based in Saigon. Formed in 2011 by the Singaporean drummer Mohamad Wahid & the French visual artist/musician Thierry Bernard-Gotteland, they are influenced by the classic ‘Seattle sound’ and bands like Earth or Sunn O))), the sounds of the emerging and noisy Ho Chi Minh City, and modern poets such as Charles Baudelaire, Stephane Mallarme, James Joyce etc. Elsewhere, Mohamad used to drum for the stoner-rock group AKAT (RIP) before playing an active role in Saigon’s underground scene; while Thierry is a talented electronic musician in his own right (à la Raster-Noton) and puts on events in Saigon with his friends from the Institute of Lower Learning.

HYO JUNG KIM (South Korea/ HCMC)

From South Korea and currently based in Saigon, HYO JUNG KIM started doing free improvisation to put an end to her love/hate relationship with the violin; since then, she has been on the path to reconciliation. HYO JUNG used to play an array of musical instruments including samulnori (traditional Korean percussion music), nong-ak (traditional Korean farmers’ music), flute, piano, pipe organ and violin but initially did not know why she grabbed those instruments to make sounds. A new approach was born starting with the violin; while performing, HYO JUNG explores things spotted in ‘that moment’, at the same time paying careful attention to reactions from the audience and other performers, making sounds in response to those. Pure improvisation.

VAN THANH TRUNG (HCMC)

Talent and an uncompromising attitude together land the young guitarist VAN THANH TRUNG a firm position in Saigon’s underground music scene. His sound is a blend of experimental rock, psychedelic, noise and shoegaze. Once a member of the short-lived punk/funk outfit Purple Balloon, he took the solo path in 2011 to discover his own musical identity, and hasn’t looked back since.

Screening of “Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home”

Tue 05 Mar 2013, 7 pm
Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội
At the end of the alley leading to Artist’s Hotel

Come to a free showing of the animal welfare documentary “Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home”. “This film tells a story of transformation and healing, and explores the awakening conscience of several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now come to question the basic assumptions of their way of life.  Presented through a woven tapestry of memories, music, and breathtaking accounts of life-altering moments, the film provides insight into the farmers’ sometimes amazing connections with the animals under their care, while also making clear the complex web of social, psychological and economic forces that have led them to their present dilemma.  Interwoven with the farmers’ stories is the dramatic animal rescue work of a newly-trained humane police officer whose sense of justice puts her at odds with the law she is charged to uphold.  With strikingly honest interviews and rare footage demonstrating the emotional lives and intense family bonds of animals most often viewed as living commodities, this groundbreaking documentary shatters stereotypical notions of farmers, farm life, and perhaps most surprisingly, farm animals themselves.”

HCMC – Discussion “Strawberry Red”

Sat 02 Mar 2013, 6 – 9 pm
Galerie Quynh
65 Đề Thám
District 1, HCMC

Come to discover a special project by Rice Creative for BRAIN Magazine in Tokyo.

Rice Creative was given a simple but challenging brief from BRAIN: Express Strawberry Red. Discussions began with color theory. What is color, light, reflection, refraction, etc. We talked matter, molecules. We considered what was strawberry red if there was no light.

We moved onto senses, like scent. Perhaps it is only a scent. Red is red, but if it smells like strawberry, maybe then it is strawberry red. Maybe the image could be any color, but smells like strawberries. Scratch & sniff would make it strawberry red. We needed limitations.

We decided to show red, as a limitation, and strawberry in some way. We kept coming back to the fact that there is no specific strawberry red. Each strawberry is different and has a spectrum of reds on its skin. There is no such thing as strawberry red. No Pantone, no CMYK, no RGB. The only thing that makes strawberry red is the context of the strawberry.

We began discussing printing with strawberries.

This led us to the goal of demonstrating the many reds of strawberry red as possible, by printing in large scale, with strawberries themselves. It could have simply been a field painting of strawberry derived pigment, but we felt using the pigment to spell strawberry is even more didactic, like a giant dictionary entry. The entry could not be reproduced in a dictionary though, in traditional print. It had to be created in actuality and experienced under a standard type of lighting, close to the lights used for color calibrating.”

Please join the Rice Creative team at the gallery this Saturday evening to experience, interpret and engage with the notion of strawberry red.

MIME SOLO ACT: Time of Mime

Hanoi: 09 and 10 Mar 2013, 8 pm
Youth Theatre

HCMC: 05 and 06 Mar 2013, 8 pm
Youth World Theatre

On the auspicious occasion of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam shares the pleasure of hosting “MIME SOLO ACT: time of mime” by Iimuro Naoki in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in March 2013.

Learned mime under Marcel Marceau, the founder of modern pantomime, Iimuro Naoki has been actively performing in plethora of festivals in the world, getting awards both in Japan and overseas.

In his previous full house performances in Vietnam in 2010 and 2011, he not only successfully triggered big laughter from the audience but also moved their hearts.

Receiving a lot of calls for an encore from the previous audience and those who missed his performances in past years, we decided to bring him back to Vietnam, not only to Hanoi but also to Ho Chi Minh City again.

Iimuro Naoki will perform different programs in two cities, Program A in Hanoi and Program B in HCMC.

The highlight of his performance in Hanoi will be a part of the acts entitled “Angel”, in which his slow motion successfully invites you to the dream-like scene in the depth of the sea. The highlight of his performance in HCMC, on the other hand, will be a part of the acts entitled “A World in Balance”, in which he received the Gold Medal at the 3rd World Delphic Games in 2009.

We hope that this show will entertain not only adults but also children (over 6 years old) with its universal body language, which is sublimed in the art of silence.

Note: Please refrain from bringing children under 5 years old to this performance because the performance is sensitive to noise.

■ Iimuro Naoki

Graduated from Ecole Internationale de Mimodrame de Paris Marcel Marceau. Graduated from Conservatoire Niedermeyer d’lssy Les Moulineaux Ecole Nationale de Musique de Dance et d’Art Dramatique, winning the first prize by the judge’s unanimity. In his dual role actor and producer, he takes an active role in many performances, thereby promoting pantomime in Japan.

*Gold medal for the mime improvisation section at Delphic Games (2009)
*Special prize in street performance competition at Kobe Biennale (2009)

“Dolls” have been a part of everyday life in Japan since ancient times. Japanese dolls reflect the customs of Japan and the aspirations of its people, possess distinctive regional attitudes, and over the centuries have developed in many diverse forms. Japanese dolls now can be categorized in many ways according to the techniques and material used to create them, as well as the themes and shapes of the dolls.

The exhibition “Japanese Traditional Dolls” introduces over 250 Japanese dolls in total in two venues. In Vietnamese Women’s Museum, their collection of over 200 Japanese dolls, mainly Edo-Kimekomi Dolls but including the other genre of dolls used in the Doll Festival or Hina Matsuri, warrior dolls and objects from the Boy’s Festival, will be exhibited.

In the Japan Foundation, meanwhile, their long-time collection of around 40 selected Japanese dolls, including female dolls dressed in kimonos, dolls depicting characters from traditional Japanese performing arts like Noh and Kabuki, Hakata dolls or clay dolls, Kokeshi dolls with their unique character, will be exhibited.

In addition to the exhibition, the other Japanese culture related activities such as Kimono/Yukata trials, Origami workshops, Japanese traditional toys trials, etc., will be also presented in Vietnamese Women’s Museum (mainly on the opening day).

Tokyo Jazz Club

Sat 02 Mar 2013, 6 – 11 pm
Outdoor Stage
Van Ho Exhibition Center
2 Hoa Lu Str, Hanoi

The Japan Foundation and CAMA Vietnam are proud to present internationally famous Japanese jazz group SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS who will entertain Hanoi on March 2. The event marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Japan and Vietnam (Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013) and will take place at the Van Ho Exhibition Center, Hanoi.

SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS combine world class musicianship with the coolest of sounds and attitude into a heady mix of jazz, fun and entertainment. Their brand of jazz is unconventional and designed to break down barriers, whether they be conventions of genre, cultural barriers or stolid audience-performer relationships.

Starting out in Tokyo clubs in 2001, the band quickly became notorious and attracted worldwide attention for their new brand of aggressive, energetic and danceable music which they called “death jazz”. Before long, the band was being championed by musical tastemakers like Giles Peterson who released six of the group’s seven albums on his Brownswood recordings label. Since 2005, the band have played the biggest festivals in Europe, such as Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, Glastonbury in the UK, Fuji Rock in Japan and the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. They also appeared on Later…with Jools Holland, the UK’s longest running and most respected live music TV program.

The band’s live show is famous the world over for being an interactive experience, something that sets them apart from other jazz groups. As the band themselves say, “We always felt that in the world of jazz, there was an unwritten rule that the musicians were to concentrate on their techniques and the audience were simply there to admire, like a transmitter/ receiver relationship. We wanted to break away from that and create exciting jazz with far more interaction between the players and the audience”. The band pulls this off with both their infectious rhythms and their energetic frontman Shacho, who acts as “the agitator”, playing a key role by in connecting the audience to the band.

Joining SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS in Hanoi will be local jazz-funk group, Nga tu Mat dien. The quintet has been playing shows in Hanoi’s capital for more than 15 years and has a tight enough sound to prove it. At the Van Ho Exhibition Center, the group will be reinventing jazz standards through a funk and Latin lense.

Keeping the party going between bands will be GiGiMix, one of Hanoi’s most entertaining DJs. With a love of swing, jazz and funk, the French-native never fails to keep crowds in the party mood with up-beat, feel-good sets that cross genres and cultures.

The concert will take place at the Van Ho Exhibition Center, 2 Hoa Lu, Hai Ba Trung on Saturday March 2nd. Tickets are free and can be obtained from CAMA ATK, 73A Mai Hac De, Hai Ba Trung and The Japan Foundation, 27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem.

Music Night “Live Alive”

Fri 01 Mar 2013, 9 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho

The rumours are true! Bread & Circus are back! Hanoi’s favourite duo have reunited after more than year and are feeling breaddier and more circussy than ever! The piano rock hotshots are ready to punch the colour into your Friday night alongside sunsplashed Raggamuffins and brand spanking new riffy rock band Lady Gargamel!

If this week seems like a giant jam sandwich of musical sweetness, then this is most certainly the jam! Delicious. Come out and support your own… Hanoi’s grassroots scene with some of the most radiant acts ever to have stepped foot on the nutty vanilla rock city stage.

Bread&Circus

Vocals, drums, guitars, electronic keys and stacks of on stage chemistry: we almost fainted when we heard of Luke DeStefano’s Vietnam return to reignite the glory days of Bread & Circus. Reunion of the year! The multi talented percussionist has been the drumming backbone behind some of Hanoi’s most dynamic and poplar bands since 2010 – Zamina, Machete, Toothbrush as well as Bread & Circus, where he pulls Phuong Dang onto paths she wouldn’t dare to tread alone.

Raggamuffins

Sax-tastic smooth boys Raggamuffins are the mango juice of the rock band world. All feet shifting, shoulder swaying, slinky funk-tinged, orange ragga pop grooves, this multi national band has been soaking our souls in sexy riddims since last summer and show no sign of throwing in the the pips just yet. It’s spring, it’s time, and we can’t wait to welcome back the band that can sing with ear to ear grins.

Lady Gargamel

Lady Gargamel are a newly formed band who have been preparing for six months to reprogram your ears with some fresh, hard, tight, melodic, heavy, riffy, arrogant rock. The band’s line up, they say, features “the Mario brothers, an Aussie communist, a British trifle maker and a miniature sized Vietnamese girl.” Different people with one thing in common: a deep love for the devil’s notes. Come and experience Hanoi’s freshest, most original band of 2013. Polish both your index and little fingers…you’ll need them!

Tickets: 50000 VND @ door (half price for students with ID)
