Screening of Documentary “5 Broken Cameras”
Sun 29 Jun 2014, 6 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học
Ba Đình, Hà Nội
Hanoi DOCLAB cordially invites you to the screening of the “5 Broken Cameras” by Emad Burnat và Guy Davidi. The film won a 2012 Sundance Film Festivalaward, Golden Apricot at the 2012 Yerevan International Film Festival, Armenia, for Best Documentary Film, and was nominated for a 2012 Academy Award.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Language: The film is in Palestinian with English and Vietnamese subtitle.
“An extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism, 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil’in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, the footage was later given to Israeli co-director Guy Davidi to edit. Structured around the violent destruction of each one of Burnat’s cameras, the filmmakers’ collaboration follows one family’s evolution over five years of village turmoil. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify, and lives are lost. “I feel like the camera protects me,” he says, “but it’s an illusion.”
Free Entrance.
The screening is non-profit and aims for research and studies only.
Positive Mass in June
Fri 27 Jun 2014, 8 pm
St Joseph Cathedral
“Positive Mass”, and event inspired on an international event called Critical Mass. It is just a bicycle ride to promote cycling for all its positive reasons. Critical Mass is a cycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. The ride was originally founded in 1992 in San Francisco. The purpose of Critical Mass is not usually formalized beyond the direct action of meeting at a set location and time and traveling as a group through city or town streets on bikes.
In Hanoi, Positive Mass (PM) is called “Đạp cho sướng”, literally meaning cycling for pleasure. Bikers meet on the last Friday of every month at St. Joseph Cathedral (Nhà thờ lớn) and travel around Hanoi following a prepared route with the ending point at the Cathedral. The first PM in Hanoi started in Oct 2012. Since Oct 2013 PM has been hold in HCMC, Thai Nguyen and Son La.
This month Đạp cho sướng – Positive Mass will be hold at 8:00 pm on Friday, 27 th of June.

The Senat, Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, France
Art Vietnam Gallery
Lane 66, Number 2, Yen Lac Street Hanoi, Vietnam (Open by appointment only)
Sebastien Laval, a young photographer from France first came to Vietnam in 1995. Entranced by the people and landscape, he has devoted the last 18 years to documenting the lives of the 54 ethnic minorities and the life and landscape of this enigmatic land. Laval’s work along with the highly respected veteran photographer from Hanoi, Le Vuong, will be exhibited at the Senat in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris from June 25 to July 6, 2014. This exhibition was mounted in December, 2013 in the Ho Chi Minh City Museum as part of the Vietnam France celebration of cultural activities in Vietnam and France.
Laval’s works in black and white reflect the energy and delight of a young photographer discovering an intriguing, exotic world. His easygoing nature attracts his subjects and he captures their natural easy grace with measured precision. From everyday activities to poetic landscapes, Laval’s photos portray the passion and beauty he discovers in the simplest of moments. 0ver 60 of Laval’s works of the 54 minorities were recently displayed suspended from the Truong Tien Bridge in the Hue Festival this May. French film maker Bertrand Edel and the Faut Pas Rever/Thalassa France TV 3 had made a film about Laval and his works. See the film below:
Veteran photographer Le Vuong has dedicated his entire life to taking photos of Vietnam. Now 95 years old, the Hanoian goes out on his bicycle early every morning, exploring the capital and capturing the ordinary as well as secret moments. He has traveled throughout the country tirelessly collecting an archive of precious memories of how life has been lived in a country that is rapidly transforming. Mainly working in color, his works depict ordinary life in the city and country that he loves. Le Vuong’s works have been exhibited in Europe, Asia and are displayed in the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi.
The exhibition will be formerly opened on June 26 at 11:00 by Jean Pierre Bel, President of the Senat, Luxembourg Gardens, Paris.

Exhibition “No Regret for the past, no project on the future, there is only Today”
Opening: Sun 22 Jun 2014, 6.30 pm
Exhibition: 22 Jun – 12 Jul 2014
Zerostation
12 the 43rd alley (at the back of Nguyen Thi Dinh elementary school),
Lam Van Ben st, Dis 7. HCMC
You are invited to the exhibition “No regret for the past, no project on future, there is only today”, the project “My city” by the artist Bang Duong. This exhibition also includes a sound work and an interactive photography.
The exhibition is curated by Truong Minh Quy and Phan Minh Tuan (Liar Ben).
The photographs of Bang Duong can be considered as the collections of the values of life, of HCMC culture, where he was born and are now living in. Probably because of his nostalgia and his Chinese origin, his everyday life photographs usually follow the traditional values also the active movement of the city.
In 2013, he participated in the photography workshop by Zhuang Wubin. This seven-day workshop is for photographers and artists who want to develop personal photo projects. Working with curator/photographer Zhuang Wubin, the aim is to take each participant through the process of developing his/her project, starting from the conceptualization to the realization/presentation of the work. This workshop is a starting point for Bang Duong to approach and make his contemporary photograph projects recently.
His “My city” project is a rove in searching for the multi view on the urban architecture. In the time of the fast urbanization, by capturing the transition between the old local architecture and the updated one, the artist puts the questions about the conflicts of the time values and the globalization.
His photography works in this project are taken with multi-exposure. This way helps us to capture more than 2 dimensions at one moment of taking photo. During an interval of 30 seconds between the two shutters, the artist seeks the two landscapes within a possible area. Watching this kind of photograph, the audience can have multidimensional view of an illusionary landscape that is overlapped, mixed and moved… The city landscape (or context) now is an interfusion of the modern meanings.
Free entry.
Call for Contributions for Photo Book “TP. Hà Nội CAPITAL CITY”
Deadline: 01 Jul 2014
You are welcome to contribute your photos for Photo Book “TP. Hà Nội CAPITAL CITY”.
The main aim of the photo book “TP. Hà Nội CAPITAL City” developed in joint cooperation with Goethe Institute Vietnam is to visualize the recent urban change from a comprehensive spatial and social perspective and finally to contribute to a more sustainable development, in general. Given the rich history of Hanoi also aspects of heritage, art, culture and of the villages in the red river delta with traditional linkages to the capital city will be covered.
Its format, contents and design builds upon the highly successful photo book “TP. Hồ Chí Minh MEGA City” published in early 2014 in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut and with support from manifold companies and endorsement from numerous Vietnamese institutions. Publication date is due to January 2015.
Your photo contribution to this exciting project would be highly appreciated. The deadline for submissions is 1st of July 2014. This is a purely non-profit project. Sponsor money will only be invested into the production of book. Therefore no honorarium is paid. Contributors will receive complimentary hard copies of the photo book, though.
Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city, is one of the most beautiful urban sites in Southeast Asia. Already in the year 1010 it got founded under the name of “Thang Long”, as seat of the Vietnamese emperor in the midst of the Red River delta. Various historic influences mix there and form an inspiring mélange of different architecture: relics of stately grandeur from the imperial era, the lavish boulevards, lined with trees, from French colonial rule; ostentatious villas in quiet gardens; numerous peaceful pagodas; uncountable representative buildings from the peak of socialist planned economy; and new buildings signaling the capitalist economy, growth and Đổi mới. The city administration has ambitious plans: its goal is to develop Hanoi into a modern and “civilized” metropolis (văn minh đô thị). Hanoi has been growing not only economically, but also geographically. Hà Tây, the former neighboring province west of the city, and other smaller provinces around Hanoi have been absorbed into the metropolis since 2008.
Hanoi’s growth and economic development is at a crossroads, though. How can Hanoi position itself as a world-class city in global competition without giving up its rich cultural and urban-architectural heritage? The city has further to live up to the demands of the higher living standards of its citizens; has to cope with the constant migration of the rural population to the city; overcome its traffic problems and, last but not least, provide an attractive location for international investors and knowledge-based industries. The charms of the inner city might be an attraction to the much wooed creative classes that should not be underestimated. In general, the challenge for Hanoi is to build on its uniqueness under global competition, instead of just falling back on it.
Following chapters are envisaged at the moment:
Hanoi from above
Change over time
Hanoi heritage
Housing
Waterways
The people of Hanoi
Urban transport
Hanoi villages
Cultural life
The soul of Hanoi
Michael Waibel as leading editor is a geographer at the University of Hamburg and did publish his PhD thesis on urban development of Vietnam’s capital in 2001. Ever since he has come back on a very regular basis – usually in the context of research and lecturing activities – and extensively documented the urban change.
“The first time I came to Hanoi in 1996, I fell in love with the city.”
Please don’t hesitate to contact Michael Waibel for further information: [email protected].

Music Night “Transitions”: The Observatory + Moe + Xai
Fri 27 Jun 2014, 7.30 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho
THE ONION CELLAR proudly presents Singaporean astronauts THE OBSERVATORY & Norwegian heavyweights MOE – live in Hanoi! Support comes from new local technopunk formidable force XAI.
In all seriousness this is quite possibly going to be the LOUDEST AND RAWEST show in Hanoi this year. Specially dedicated to people who were rocking with us and ZENI GEVA almost a year ago!
THE OBSERVATORY (Singapore – avant-rock)
The heart and soul of The Observatory is in its constant reinvention. With each release, the members have persisted in their experimental take on the pop songform.
In 12 years, The Observatory have gone from folk electronica to prog to avant rock, to approaching a more primal sound in recent years, evident in their fifth album, Catacombs; a study in delusion, insanity and obsession.
Genre preoccupations aside, The Observatory’s music is texturally complex, viscerally emotional and splintering in its bleakness. The attempt to cross wasted borders and find musical extremities that parallel polarities within human existence provokes and inspires in a deeply enigmatic way. Even at its coldest and most abstract, it is human to the core.
Based in Singapore, the independent avant rock band has released five albums and several special project releases. Their indie and improv leanings reflect an obsessive intent to stifle inhibition and undermine mechanical ways of commercial music-making.
MOE (Norway – experimental noise rock)
The Norwegian band MoE is known for mixing their minimalistic compositions with alternative and experimental approaches that fails to fit in the rock genre.
With countless collaborations exceeding the borders of rock and noise, MoE seeks the absolute presence in the execution of the music. Loud and violently, they molest their instruments and brings the listener closer to a healthy insanity.
Their recent activity includes touring in Mexico, Japan, Europe, seeking new collaborations with experimental scenes all over the planet to expand the music. MoE continues working in an unpredictable, noisy and dark landscape, with a broad musical hunger. Over the years MoE have collaborated with musicians and bands such as cellist Okkyung Lee, Lasse Marhaug, John Hegre, The Observatory and Arabrot ++++.
XAI (Vietnam – technopunk)
XAI are hot lava that spilled when a group of young artists emerging from Hanoi’s experimental music school, DomDom, came together with two members of Vietnam’s rawest fem punk band, GỗLim, and recruited UK front woman Lizo to ‘play the microphone’.
Loosely defining their music as technopunk, this frantically playful, live electronic band blend trumpet and keyboard melodies with crashing drums, scratchy vocals and analogue object play upon layers of solid baselines and originally crafted beats and textures. Visual art, fluid performance and unrestrained exploration of sound expression bond and drive XAI, whose name literally translates to ‘wrong’ – but spelt wrong.
The band, still very much in the embryonic stage of development are one to keep on the radar for fresh future music.

She grew up in Ottawa but was born to Haitian parents in Montréal. In the wake of her first album, she moved to France. A delicate stage of her life that set the background for the lyrics on ‘Dying Is A Wild Night’, her last album released in 2013.
Instead of gentle and acoustic folk, the young artist prefers more sophisticated energy of powerful pop. The lyrics are personal as always, her voice is still sensual and youthful, but the arrangements place emphasis on rhythm and electronic sounds.

The Songs of Bob Dylan Tribute Night
Fri 20 Jun 2014, 7.30 pm
Hanoi Social Club
6 Hoi Vu Str, Hanoi
The aaaanswer my friend, is blowing in … oh sorry about that.
Bob Dylan. America’s answer to Trinh Cong Son? Or an oversimplistic comparison? Who knows. What we do know is that we have a bunch of musicians ready to open the songbooks of this great folk singer (Bob Dylan, not Trinh Cong Son) and play some of his great works.
We’ve got strumming guitars, harmonicas, drums and scratchy voices supplied by pro-performers and loving amateurs. Playing Bob Dylan’s most popular and also lesser known songs. It will be ENTERTAINING!
Come and sway, feel all reminiscent, and enjoy folk music in Hanoi’s number one intimate acoustic venue.
Tickets: 50,000 VND @ the door.
