Lãng Du Friday Night is a series of Friday music nights by Lang Du band. Each night will have a featured theme based on Flamenco performed by the band, in cooperation with two other artists and guests.

There can be additional dancers, or players of saxophone, violon, flute or other traditional music instruments aligned with the night theme.

Young Composers in Southeast Asia: Competition & Festival 2013

For the third time, Goethe-Institut in Southeast Asia invites young composers of the region to present their compositions. The 2013 edition of the regional encounter is being organized in collaboration with the College of Music at Mahidol University in Salaya / Thailand.

An international jury will select ten outstanding pieces. These will be discussed in a workshop in Bangkok/Thailand in December 2013. The 10 composers will be invited to this workshop. Goethe-Institut is proud to announce once again the participation of the Berlin-based group for contemporary music “Ensemble Mosaik” during the workshop and the festival. After the workshop, the international jury will make a final decision and price-money will be awarded to three winners. Workshop and concerts will be held between December 09 and 15, 2013 at Mahidol University, Salaya (near Bangkok).

Call for Entries / Deadlines

We welcome composers from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam to send in their work. Deadline for entries is July 31, 2013. All entries should be addressed to the Goethe-Institut Bangkok.

Instrumentation

Western instruments:

Flute (also piccolo, alto and bassflute), Oboe (also englishhorn), Clarinet in Bb (also bassclarinet in Bb),

Percussion (see specification), Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello.

Percussion specification: Gran Cassa, Tamtam, 5 Tomtoms, standard octave of Crotales, 3 Woodblocks, two normal cymbals, wuhan cymbal, vibraphone; 3 Chinese Gongs (actually smaller tamtams), triangle.

Composers may use a selection of these. If a composer wants to use further instruments, he/she may ask the Goethe-Institut for availability. If the Goethe-Institut agrees, the additional instrument is allowed. If not, the piece will automatically be excluded.

Local instruments:

Each composer may include one local instrument/player of his/her respective cultural realm, provided that he/she can name a player who is able to collaborate with the Western musicians and will be present during the final workshop (travel expenses and board by the Goethe-Institut). In the score the part shall be written in Western notation, while the part for the player may use special local notation.

Basic Rules

• Composers from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam are allowed to participate.

• Composers who were born in the countries mentioned above but who are currently studying or working abroad are allowed to join the competition. However Goethe-Institut cannot provide international airfares in case of selection except from the Southeast Asian region of the participating countries.

• Composers who have won one of the first three prizes in 2009 or 2011 are NOT allowed to participate.

• All participants must be born after 1st of April 1978.

• The piece should not be longer than 5 minutes.

• The score may be hand-or computer written and must have clear explanations for everything. A score that cannot be read exactly is automatically dismissed.

• Every participant is allowed to send only one score.

• Each participant sends 6 copies of his/her score with an anonymous sign on it (no name no title), including a CD with the anonymous score as a digital PDF-file (if the score is hand written, please scan the complete score and add the anonymous sign). In a sealed envelope with the same sign, the participant provides his/her full address, copy of the passport (or a similar proof of age and nationality), email-address, phone numbers and a written statement about the authenticity of the score.

The jury of the Composers Festival will be announced on the website of Goethe-Institut Bangkok. The jury will select ten pieces that will be discussed in the workshops in December 2013 together with the Ensemble Mosaik and possible additional musicians. After the workshop and the final performance, the jury will make a final decision of three selected pieces. All three prizes will be 2000,- Euro each. The decision of the jury is undisputable.

About Before Sunrise and Before Sunset

Before Sunrise is a 1995 romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The film follows Jesse Wallace (Ethan Hawke), a young American, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know each other.

Like its predecessor, Before Sunset (2004) was directed by Richard Linklater. However, this time Linklater shares screenplay credit with both actors from the film, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Linklater also shares story credit with the original Before Sunrise screenwriter Kim Krizan.

The film picks up the story in Before Sunrise where a young American man (Hawke) and a young French woman (Delpy) meet on a train and spend one night in Vienna. Nine years later in Before Sunset, their paths intersect again. It plays out in real time as they spend one afternoon together in Paris.

Before Sunset received broad acclaim, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Dogma Prize in Self – Portraiture III

We are delighted to announce the staging of the third edition of the Dogma Prize in Self-Portraiture.

The prize was created with the principle aim of inspiring artists to explore the infinite possibilities that the challenge of producing a self-portrait provides, and to encourage the participation of young and emerging talent along with established members of the artistic community of Vietnam.

Last year, over 320 artists submitted works and we were very moved at the depth and quality of so much of the art received. We hope we may equal or even better that result this year.

The Dogma Prize 2013 winner receives 120 million vnd and three finalists receive Dogma Prize Special Recognition Awards of 15 million each.

This year, we are also delighted to present a new prize category – The Dogma New Media Award.

This is intended to attract artists who are exploring new and experimental ways to create, and that they may also turn their attention to pushing the boundaries of self-portraiture into new territory.

Pensioners from across the planet compete in the World over 80s Table Tennis Championships in Inner Mongolia.

From retirement, care homes, mental and physical health to death and loneliness; 8 players from 4 continents, with 703 years between them; guide us through the extraordinary world of Veteran sports. The film interweaves the competition with intimate and candid portraits that explore the hope, passion, prejudice, and immediacy of growing old.

Terry (81) having been given a week to live, gets in sight of winning gold. Inge (89) has used table tennis to train her way out of the dementia ward she committed herself to. Australian legend Dorothy DeLow is 100, and finds herself a mega celebrity in this rarefied world and Texan Lisa Modlich, a new-comer at 85 years old, is determined to do whatever it takes to win her first gold. This film is as much about the tenacity of the human spirit as it is a meditation on mortality.

From the outset, the film challenges perceptions of what it is to grow old. With humour and sensitivity it emotionally engages us with the issues we all face in an ageing global population. Right now 1 in 6 people on the planet are over the age of 60. By 2030 that figure will be 1 in every 4.

Returning artist Dinh Thi Tham Poong’s work is deeply influenced by her Muong ethnic minority roots and her childhood growing up in a remote mountainous region on the border of Vietnam with China. In this exhibition, Tham Poong uses vivid images, striking contrasts and intricate patterns to bring her strong connection to these roots to life. Her poetic watercolours on handmade ‘Dzo’ paper are almost surreal, erasing boundaries between humans and nature.

“In my mind everything has two halves. Everything contains each other, is intertwined with each other. What makes me happy are the customs of the minority people who I grew up with, their spirituality and musicality, the sounds and smells of nature”, she says. “I am now living in a big city but these memories and experiences have a special place inside me. Through my paintings I express my love and admiration for the close connectedness that minority people in their beautifully patterned clothes have with nature”.

One of Vietnam’s most successful contemporary artists, Tham Poong has had 17 international exhibitions over the last 15 years including shows in Berlin, New York City, London, Miami, Tokyo, Helsinki and Manila.

“The Pink Choice” is an exceptional collection of photographs capturing daily activities as well as private moments of several homosexual couples in Vietnam.This photo series is a project by Maika Elan (Nguyen Thanh Hai), who has a sociology background but has been a professional photographer since 2006.

With her first documentary photography project “The Pink Choice”, Maika has not only shown her sharp eyes and perfect photography skills but also addressed one of the burning issues in current societies, rights for the homosexual.

Voicing about a global concern, the photo album was awarded 1st prize under category ‘Contemporary Issues, Stories’ by prestigious World Press Photo Contest in early 2013 and has been touring around the world since.

    “I want to tell the story by going into the great depth of love and intimacy. I want to avoid stereotypes of homosexuality. I also want to avoid the tabloid/shocking news style. I want to show simply how they care and love each other in daily activities. More strongly, I want to show that their loving and caring for each other is nothing deviant. They are all normal and natural behaviors, attitudes, thoughts and emotions.

    Love is beautiful, and we can only claim ourselves supportive of homosexuality when we accept their love – and see it beautiful as it naturally is!”

On the 12th of June, the Goethe-Institut will be exhibiting a collection of new products & furniture for future offices; end results of the 3rd edition of Future Living Studio.

Future Living Studio (FLS) is a temporary design studio, it establishes a team of 3 local designers and 3 international designers from France, Australia and Germany who collaborate closely with some Vietnamese bamboo and rattan companies during 3 months in order to develop a series of new products. FLS is a sub-project of SPIN (Sustainable Product Innovation project), funded by EU SWITCH-Asia. The 1st and 2nd editions of FLS were organised in Ho-Chi-Minh City. The 3rd edition of FLS is now running for the first time in Hanoi.  

FLS also aspires to transfer design capacity to the companies by involving them in every step of the design process, from extensive user research to co-design with factory workers. Doing so will help Vietnamese products to compete for their design value and not just on cost price or on volume.

Considering their capacity for innovation, the designers have been developing new products and furniture for green offices that induce different levels of innovation: from redesign to product system. They have defined a vision for the future of offices in Vietnam and decided to explore adaptability, playfulness, flexibility and cultural heritage in the usage of products such as a multi-position chair, a moving desk, an expandable partition.

Within the framework of the 5th European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival the Goethe Institut and DocNet present the “ChopShots Southeast Asia Travelling Festival” in Hanoi. “ChopShots” is an international festival for documentary films focusing on the area Southeast Asia that is annually taking place in Jakarta. On 9th June selected films from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines will be screened in Hanoi. For this occasion several of the filmmakers will present.

The Right of the Dead (Malaysia, 2012, 28 minutes)

In 2009, the dead body of Teoh Beng Hock (TBH), political aide of a Selangor Executive Councillor, was found outside of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) building, where he had been held overnight for interrogation. Tricia Yeoh takes a close look at the circumstances that led to TBH’s death and the investigation that followed using archival footage, photographs, and interviews of family and friends.

Two Girls Against the Rain (Cambodia, 2012, 11 minutes)

Soth Yun (57) and Sem Eang (58) met during the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime. More than two million people died during the Khmer Rouge times. Soth and Sem, the lesbian couple, survived. There has been a long fight for respect by fellow villagers and their families. “Two Girls Against the Rain” tells a true story about two women struggling hard for their love.

The Social Game (Myanmar, 2012, 11 minutes)

“The Social Game” takes its audience on a journey into the refugee camps in Kachin State. In Myanmar, the Kachin Independence Army and Military Government have been involved in an armed conflict since 9 June 2011.. The documentary reveals different answers to the question ‘What is the most important thing for our country?’ They all reflect stories of lives in Myanmar. At the same time the answers turn into questions for the viewer.

The 2nd DocNet Southeast Asia Summer School 2013 is jointly hosted by Vicas and the Goethe-Institut in Hanoi. In a 10-day workshop twenty documentary filmmakers from all over Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam) will get the chance to work together, exchange their knowledge and get inspired by 2 renowned international experts.

Aurélie Ricard is a Paris based film editor. Starting in the late-60s during French Nouvelle Vague, she has been a professional in her field for more than 40 years. Ricard has worked as a cutter for cinema and TV productions, fictional films and documentaries.

Leonard Retel Helmrich is a Dutch cinematographer and film director. His documentary films have received highest honours worldwide, including the World Documentary Award at Sundance Film Festival. Helmrich developed the so-called “Single Shot Cinema”, a cinematographic technique of long takes with a hand-held but smooth camera recording from various angles.

DocNet Southeast Asia is a project initiated by the Goethe-Institut Southeast Asia and funded by the EuropeAid programme “Investing in People” to support and professionalize documentary filmmaking in Southeast Asia.

Child labour and child trafficking are bitter reality in the poor countries of West Africa, although governments keep denying. Change of scenery: During the late 90s, Nigerian Jonathan Akpoborie is a star in Germany’s first football league. In 2001, in order to provide a steady income for his family, Akporobie buys a ship, which his brothers use as a ferry on the West African coast. Through an incident it comes to light that on board more than 200 children were deported as drudges from their home countries. International organisations raise the alarm. When it is revealed, that the ship is owned by famous football player Akpoborie, his career is over and he returns to Nigeria. But how much did he really know, does he bear any blame at all? How are the lives of the saved children proceeding? The film pursues these questions from various angles, in Africa and in Germany. Meanwhile the remains of the ship get covered with water and sand…

About Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca is a American film directed by Michael Curtiz and based on the unpublished stage play Everybody Comes to Rick’s by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison. The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid. Set during World War II, it focuses on a man torn between, in the words of one character, “love and virtue”. He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her Czech Resistance leader husband escape the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.

Although Casablanca was an A-list film with established stars and first-rate writers, no one involved with its production expected it to be anything out of the ordinary. It was just one of hundreds of pictures produced by Hollywood every year. Casablanca had its world premiere on November 26, 1942 in New York City, and was released on January 23, 1943, in the United States. Casablanca won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Its lead character, memorable lines, and pervasive theme song have all become iconic. The film has consistently ranked near the top of lists of the greatest films of all time.

Established in December 2012 as an independent art space aiming to support contemporary Vietnamese art, manzi encourages diversity, creativity and co-creation in the arts & culture.

From June 2013, we are calling for proposals for solo/group exhibitions from young Vietnamese artists. Successful applicants will then work with our team to further develop and realize their proposals before their exhibitions, which will take place at the end of this year.

Manzi will provide successful applicants with an exhibition venue, some production money, and travelling and living expenses (only for artists not based in Hanoi).

International Artist in Residence in Beppu (JAPAN) call for application

The next KASHIMA 2013＃2 (International Artistic Residency) will take place from September to October 2013 (dates to be confirmed). We invite artists from various disciplines in the contemporary art field to submit their project.

Artists should think their projects on the theme ”SPACE-TIME”. The project will be shown in one or two streets in Beppu downtown in collaboration with the local activity (small shops, café, restaurant). Also, artists will be invited to participate to a forum-discussion with local population to talk and exchange ideas about the art work.

The Beppu Project is an international artistic residency programme. It encourages international artists to nurture a creation while in residency. The residency will provide artistic fee, production cost, travel and transportation, accommodation in Beppu, per diem and studios.

All the applications for this residency will be looked through with attention to the required documents (proposal, artist profile and example of a previous art work). The selection results will be published on our website by July 15, 2013.

San Art seeks your application for ‘San Art Laboratory: Session 4’! All artists 40 years of age and under can now apply!

Begun in May 2012, ‘San Art Laboratory’ is Vietnam’s first studio/residency program. It aims to provide 3 Vietnamese artists (under 40) with studio and living space for 6 months each. An additional studio and apartment is dedicated to international residents.

During each ‘lab session’ (residency period), participating Vietnamese artists must be willing to participate in regular writing and discussion regarding their work and ideas with a specific ‘talking partner’.

Successful Vietnamese applicants will be granted USD1000 production money, a studio to make their art, separate living quarters and a small living allowance.

Each lab session will end with a group exhibition at San Art showcasing realized work. The ‘San Art Laboratory’ Advisory Board will assess all applications for successful applicants.

(International applications will be considered with particular terms and conditions)

About Conductor Jan Stulen

Jan Stulen was born in 1942 in Amsterdam, where he studied conducting and piano and violin at the Music Academy. In 1970 Jan Stulen became chief conductor of the “Nederlands Ballet Orkest” in Amsterdam, and the “Nederlands Dans Theater“.

From 1976 till 1992 he was permanent conductor of Radio Hilversum. During this period he made radio productions of over 1000 compositions. With the orchestra’s and choirs he gave many public performances with all kinds of repertoire, ranging from Bach to contemporary and jazz.

From 1992 till 2002 Jan Stulen was principal conductor of the Deutsches Kammer Orchester Frankfurt am Main. From 1998 till 2003 he was chief conductor of the “Nederlands Promenade Orkest”. As guest conductor he works with the State Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in Cluj (Rumania), the Symphonie Orkest van Vlaanderen (Bruges) and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. Stulen has also extensively worked in the operatic field, conducting opera’s from Gluck till Menotti.

From 2006 till 2008 he was chief conductor of the Amsterdam RAI Opera Company. As a guest conductor Stulen has appeared with all Dutch orchestra’s as well as orchestra’s in Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Sweden, Egypt, Greece , Korea, Turkey, Denmark, Hungary and Rumania.

As a teacher he is active at the Conservatories of Maastricht and Rotterdam. Jan Stulen did many TV-appearances in long running series like “Una Voce Particolare”. Jan Stulen has made many CD’s and DVD with a wide variety of compositions.

You are invited to a jazz-rock concert with a singer and harmonicist Charles Pasi. Parisian Charles Pasi’s interest in music started at age 17 in a gospel choir. Singer, guitarist and harmonicist, he has a passion for blues, jazz, rock and world music.

The concert is a part of the 40 year celebration of diplomatic relation of France – Vietnam.

After his education at the Saint Louis Jazz School, he continues at Jazz School CIM and Atla School for contemporary music in Paris. Engaged on the tour of Carla Bruni and invited to various jazz and blues festivals, Charles Pasi quickly made a name for himself.

Writing his own music, he attracts attention of the professional musicians and film maker who entrust him for the music of the movie “Actrices” by Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and “Cineman” by Yann Moix. His first album “Mainly Blue” was unanimously welcomed in the musical community and made it to the final of the Memphis International Blues Challenge on February 2007.

Also on the scene in France, with his EP record “Uncaged” on October 2010, the singer Charles Pasi distils with talent his wide influences and invites in the passage the legendary Archie Shepp’s saxophone for two titles, among which “Better With Butter”. Theses songs are replayed in his album “Uncaged » on March 2011.

- We start off with a walk around that gem of Hanoi history, culture, and lore: Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

- The following week, bright and early, we take you out to the Tam Đảo Bear Rescue Center – both the bears and the center now rescued from extinction. They are cute, furry, cuddly, playful, and endlessly fun to watch! And, it’s really important we support the center with our presence.

- 2 films by young and emerging Vietnamese cinematographers put you in the cool of Cinematheque while giving you a fresh new perspective on some old

- And, to round out our year, the Japanese section will take those of us who can speak Japanese to the 2nd floor of the Museum of History to bring you up-to-date from the Cham through the Nguyen.

The Orchestre des Champs-Elysées is devoted to the performance of music written from the mid XVIII to the early XX centuries (Haydn-Mahler) played on the instruments that existed during the composer’s lifetime.

This program is to celebrate 40 year of diplomatic relation between France and Vietnam.

For several years, the Orchestra has been in residence at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris and the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, performed in almost all the major concert halls such as the Musikverein (Vienna), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Barbican Centre (London), Alter Oper (Frankfurt), the Philharmonic Halls in Berlin and Munich, the Gewandhaus (Leipzig), the Lincoln Center (New York), Parco della Musica (Rome) and the Auditoriums of Dijon and Lucerne. The orchestra also toured Japan, Corea, China and Australia and South America.

Philippe Herreweghe is the artistic director and principal conductor, but the orchestra played under several guest conductors, among them Daniel Harding, Christian Zacharias, Louis Langrée, Christophe Coin, and René Jacobs.

The Orchestre des Champs-Elysées feels passionately about offering an innovative approach to music and therefore, at each one of its concerts it offers the possibility of public rehearsals, conferences, or meetings and workshops with classes of school children.

The Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, partner of the TAP – Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers, is funded by the French Ministry of Culture and the government of the Poitou-Charentes region.

Following the success of the preceding festivals, the European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival celebrates its 5th anniversary. Besides this year’s focus on Belgian films, seven further European countries (Germany, Sweden, France, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and UK) in association with the National Documentary and Scientific Film Studio of Vietnam will present the 5th International Documentary Film Festival in Vietnam, from 5th-14th June in Hanoi and from 10th-29th June in Ho Chi Minh City.

Within the framework of the 5th European-Vietnamese Documentary Film Festival the Goethe Institut and DocNet present the “ChopShots Southeast Asia Travelling Festival” in Hanoi. “ChopShots” is an international festival for documentary films focusing on the area Southeast Asia that is annually taking place in Jakarta. On 9th June selected films from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines will be screened in Hanoi. For this occasion several of the filmmakers will present.

Come to an art exhibition “Cargo” by Barbara Pellizzari Anchisi. Since Barbara came to Saigon, she has been fascinated by the positive energy released by the city with its mix of sounds and colours and its melting pot of religions. All this combined with the placid calm of the boats that ply the infinite variety of paths flowing through and around the city, are the theme of her latest works, expressed by using a combination of printmaking and tempera technique on Chinese paper.

Born in Turin, Barbara has a Diploma in Fashion and Theatre Design and a Diploma in Painting Conservation. She started and consolidated her career as a painting restorer by working on many masterpieces from the Italian Renaissance under the guidance of prominent restorer Edo Masini, Head of the Restoration Department at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. Later she worked in the field of Art Restoration at Institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kunst Akademie in Linz, Austria, the Karachi Art Museum in Pakistan and the Italian Embassy of Beijing. While cultivating her passion for painting, she taught Art for four years at SCIS in Shanghai. In 2007 she joined Dulwich College Beijing, where she taught Art in Junior and Senior school until 2012.

Since her arrival in China in 1996, she has exhibited her work in two solo exhibitions at Enterdit Creation, Shanghai. A third exhibition, titled“ Da Levante a Levante”, took place in Italy and has been the starting point for her exploration of working with pebbles and Chinese ink, which found its conclusion with the exhibition “Pebbles in my pocket” in Yishu8, Beijing in 2011.

In September 2012 Barbara and her family moved to Vietnam. She is currently running art projects at Pho Cap School for street children in the Binh Thanh district.    

A Night of Contemporary Ballet

Come to an evening of contemporary dance, featuring a full-length original version of “Rite of Spring” choreographed by Cao Duc Toan and Ha Thai Son. Also on the program will be another original piece, “Nina Simone Suite” (six songs of Nina Simone) choreographed by Marisa Hayes and danced by Cao Chi Thanh and guest soloist, American dancer Cassidy Isaacson.

Cassidy Isaacson is a dancer with the Grand Rapids Ballet (Michigan, USA) under the artistic direction of Patricia Barker. She studied ballet for fourteen years in her hometown of Redmond, Washington. Cassidy has performed soloist and pas de deux roles in The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, Company B, The Envelope, Con Amore, in Rachael Riley’s Dreams, in Olivier Wevers’ The Sofa and Four Little Swans in Mario Radacovsky’s contemporary version ofSwan Lake. Cassidy has also studied with Deborah Hadley at Pacific Northwest Ballet, Long Beach Ballet in China and on scholarship at the Julliard School in New York. Cassidy is delighted to be dancing Natural Phenomena: Nina Simone Suite again after performing in its Paris premiere last summer.

Marisa C. Hayes is an award winning choreographer and dance filmmaker based in France. Her choreography has been commissioned throughout Europe, North America and Asia for diverse venues including recent performances at Paris’ Grand Palais during the International Contemporary Art Fair, the Centre National de la Danse, and at the American Dance Festival. She was recently named choreographer in residence at Dussedorf’s state theatre for dance (Germany) where she created a new version of The Rite of Spring featuring dancers of Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal. Marisa’s recent honors include the Susan Braun Award from the New York Dance Films Association (shared with Franck Boulègue, her husband and collaborator), CEC Arts Link New York Fellow, New York Theatre Communications Group Fellow, and being named Cultural Ambassador to Hong Kong by the Regional Government of Burgundy (France). Marisa has also contributed to five books on dance history and dance films, in addition to co-directring the International Video Dance Festival of Burgundy and Body Cinéma Dance Theatre.

In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam and Consulate-General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, proudly present the cutting-edge contemporary art exhibition “Winter Garden” from Saturday 8 June to Sunday 21 July 2013 in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Curated by art critic Midori Matsui, the exhibition “Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art” features 35 works – drawings, paintings, and video works – by 14 young Japanese artists active from the latter half of the 1990s throughout the first decade of the 21st century.

The artists presenting their distinctive views of the world through the combination of fragments and imbuing the obsolete or the commonplace with new functions or meanings, share the similar style of expression, which Ms. Matsui calls “Micropop.”

It is noteworthy that this exhibition includes three video works by Koki Tanaka, who has been selected as the representative artist for the Japan pavilion at the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia in Italy (The biennale runs from 1 June to 28 November 2013).

How do Japan’s artists, living in an increasingly globalized world and in a time when shared values are hard to establish, see our contemporary world? We hope that visitors to “Winter Garden” will nurture the understanding of empathy with the insights and perspectives of the artists through the exhibited works.

Come to an experimental English teaching course specialized in Art. These courses will be for artists, or for someone who need to use English to do research on contemporary art (journalists, for example)

These courses are in a project named “Seven Days in English for Art”, a project we collaborate with artist Nguyen Tran Uu Dam, who will be the main teacher for the course.

This course is focus on skill of communication, understanding terminilogies, self-presentation/promotion in English

Artist and curator Nguyen Nhu Huy from ZeroStation will be responsible in explaining/interpreting English aesthetics/artistic/cultural terminologies that have been often used in international contemporary art forum, while artist Nguyen Tran Uu Dam will be responsible in helping participants to speak/listen correctly in terms of grammar/pronunciation in English, etc.

Particularly speaking, this is the English course that does not try to provide ALL English skills as in a normal course. On the contrary, this course only tries to find way to furnish necessary and practical skills for ARTIST in order to help him/her in practical art world situations. For this reason, the course only focus in SOME areas of vocabulary and specialised skill.

The tentative time for the first course will be 09th -16th June 2013. Each day we will study for three hours (after 90 minutes we will have a 15 minutes break) from 7:00pm-10:00pm at ZeroStation (quarter 288 Nam Ki Khoi Nghia, ward 8, district 3, HCMC)

For the whole course, each participant must pay 70 USD. And if being selected to the course, all payments must pay in advance one time on the first meeting day.

For best result, we regret to limit the number of participants to 8 persons. We will select participants by application. THE CONTENT OF APPLICATION

Application must be written in English. Applicants should let us know where have you studied English before and which level you are at right now? We will give priority to young artists, cultural journalists, or the one who are working/studying in creative industry or literature field.
