HCMC – Exhibition “Sole Imprint of a Wood Flux”
Exhibition: 29 Jan – 29 Jun 2015, 9 am – 9 pm
Phuong My Flagship Store
81 Le Thanh Ton, Dist 1, HCMC
Wood-flux – a wooden flow – seems to be a contradictory phrase for how can something as sturdy as wood also stream so fervently. Such a concept indeed recalls a Japanese genre of woodblock prints on silk and paper – ‘Ukiyo-e’ – meaning ‘pictures of the floating world’. Inspired by the caliber of Ukiyo-e woodblock and the textile pattern of PHUONG MY’s Spring Summer 2015 collection, artist Nguyễn Hữu Trâm Kha showcases various fascinations of a ‘Wood-flux’.
Both Trâm Kha and Phuong My love utilizing contrasts in subject, material, form, and composition. For example, Phuong My has a Japanese textile designer create delicate and feminine patterns; she then weaves them into particular rigid fabric to style powerful silhouettes. Meanwhile, Trâm Kha meticulously carves a wooden surface – a solid medium – to characterize flora and abstract creatures as if they are floating.
In the past, Ukiyo-e required collaboration between artist, engraver, printer, and publisher. In contemporary art and design, such collaboration still plays an important role. Trâm Kha designs the artwork for the carver who executes her drawings in these woodblock sculptures. The Japanese designer creates textile pattern inspired by Phuong My’s ideas of femininity and nature; and then Phuong My will utilize that print design across her whole subsequent collection. In this forthcoming collaboration between Phuong My and visual artist, Trâm Kha, the history of the ukiyo-e woodblock aligns harmoniously with Phuong My’s print textile. One unique woodblock can produce multiple prints, just as one unique textile pattern can be shaped into multiple garment pieces for a collection. This is an essential relation between originality and reproduction in art and fashion design.
The exhibition is curated by Arlette Quỳnh-Anh Trần.

Phan Quang’s sculptural installation of light and bamboo, titled ‘Red Stone’, speaks of social balance and belief, questioning what kind of heart can be freely nurtured in today’s world. Phunam’s photographic ‘Patination’ takes inspiration from the urban streets of Saigon, where walls peel and crumble revealing a layered history of hidden agendas and secrets. Lena Bui’s drawings map the chaotic order of Saigon’s street traffic. Tran Minh Duc’s tourist postcard collages of ‘classic’ Vietnam carries his signature ‘pink’ crystal which refers to ‘ Pomacea Canaliculata’ or apple snail eggs that were officially imported into Vietnam in the 1980s, believing them desirable by the domestic consumer market – these snails were later listed as one of the most dangerous invasive species in Vietnam.

Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi

This is a unique opportunity for you to see his visions of landscapes and nature from the places where the artist lives and experiences.
Below is the artist’s thought on the paintings in “Winter Hues”:
“In every scene, I’m observing the colour gradients and the passage of time in nature. The four seasons of the year each have their seasonal segments corresponding to four hues. There are myriads of colours in each hue and endless meanings to each colour.
And there are many forms to each meaning.
Every form consists of hues; and hues contain all forms at every single moment… At the moment, I’m painting Winter Hues.”
Ha Manh Thang (born in 1980) has a long history of cooperation with Dong Phong Gallery ever since he was a 4th year student in Hanoi Fine Art University. Since then, he has gained lots of success, and he is by now the most important young artist in Vietnam. Documentary Screening “Welcome to the Machine” and Discussion with Andreas Steinkogler
Thu 22 Jan 2015, 8 pm
Hanoi Rock City
27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho
Hanoi DocLab and Hanoi Rock City are delighted to present the screening of a music documentary, followed by a discussion with Austrian film director Andreas Steinkogler.
Welcome to the Machine (100 mins, 2012)
Director: Andreas Steinkogler
Is there a secret recipe for success? How did the established bands make it to where they are, and how on earth does one get a record deal? There are a limited number of steps a young band will have to take in order to even get noticed. First off – start a band! Easiest thing in the world, or is it? Do you have to be able to play an instrument or is it sufficient to be an asshole in front of the camera in order to make it into the next Hall of Fame? What are the other bands doing differently and why does it work better? These and many more questions are usually what aspiring musicians ask themselves on their way to stardom. Not always dead serious, but most definitely pitiless – after all it’s just about this one big question: Is there one right way to Fame? Featuring One Republic, Cypress Hill, Megadeth, BRMC, Uriah Heep, Peaches and many more….
“Welcome to the Machine” definitely isn’t just a film for experts, but great entertainment for everyone who is mad about music. Most of all though “Welcome to the Machine” is a must for prospective musicians, no matter what genre they intend to work in.
“Welcome to the Machine“ reveals the core of the music business machine. By doing that, the film doesn’t care about genres or categorization. There are thousands of different music worlds but only one business. The Austrian micro cosmos is being explored, as well as the global music scene in New York or London, Helsinki or Tel Aviv.
About the director:
Andreas Steinkogler has worked for the music channel GOTV and is now working as a director and cinematographer for various production companies. Moreover he’s a band manager and also DJ. He was supported by Hannes Höttl (music journalist, musician, author, former label manager, former A&R).

Film Screening “Sandy Lives”
Thu 29 Jan 2015, 7 pm
Hanoi Cinematheque
22A Hai Bà Trưng, Hà Nội
While we look for some new films to show you in 2015 we’re going to dust off some of the classics, starting with ‘Sandy Lives’ (Đời Cát).
This complex, engaging film from the late 90s deals with the long-lasting effects of war on people’s lives. In a sea-side village somewhere in Central Viet Nam, a man returns to his wife after being cut-off for decades by the American war. His life has moved on – he has married again and had a child – and so has hers. Torn between a sense of duty to their past-selves and the knowledge that those people, that time, is gone forever, the characters struggle to reconcile the old with the new.
Skilfully acted and directed, Sandy Lives is full of subtleties and cultural insights, particularly for non-Vietnamese. Be warned – the subtitles leave a lot to be desired (a reflection of how far Vietnam has developed over the last 15 years) – but it’s still very much worth it. The sight of sand-dunes in Viet Nam is worth seeing alone!
Production year: 1999
Running time: 90 mins
Language: English subtitles
The screening will finish with a question and answer session with Director Mr Thanh Van.
Please note that we are trialling not taking reservations for our films. Our screenings rarely sell out but please arrive at least 10 minutes early to avoid missing out.
Entrance: 150,000 VND

Exhibition: 27 Feb – 21 Mar 2015
L’Espace
24 Tràng Tiền, Hà Nội
You are invited to the exhibition “By the window” by Duong Thuy Duong.
I love the morning when the kids are at school. I stay home alone making myself a cup of hot coffee, listening to Rachmaninoff and look out of the window. It is a large window overlooking the lush vegetation on a bright summer day, or falling leaves in the autumn, gray and gloomy sky in the winter or fragile space announcing the arrival of spring.
I just want to sit still and think. Nothing important, just the reflection of an ordinary person, an ordinary woman, an ordinary mother.
The coffee is cold, the music has stopped and the four seasons have passed, and … I paint …

Made in his recognizable Action Painting style, the sixteen paintings of Duong’s latest collection vividly show that this cat does indeed dream in color.

The entire life of the artist/ art educator Tran Trung Ky (1939 – 2014) has been a devotion to art and art education. He taught at art and culture school (formerly Ha Nam Ninh province and later Nam Dinh province). After his graduation from Vietnam College of fine arts major in Fine arts in 1975, because of his decent and quiet character as well his limited working area in Nam Dinh only so that besides from the students and very few friends. Not everyone has the opportunity to admire all of his works spanning from many periods from the 50s until now. Regardless of any period, material and expression language, the works of Tran Trung Ky always show a certain love and respect for the country, homeland as well as human beings through loving and simple gestures. Especially in the images of the old streets of the Southern citadel (Nam Dinh), portraits of people and landscapes in the rural area of Son Nam.
From 1978 to 1984, both the works and the artist himself were traveling to international exhibition and residency in Germany and Bulgaria. He was the representative from the purely Vietnamese soul through the arts. His works were in the collection of Vietnam Fine Arts Museum as well.
At the moment, the artist/ teacher Tran Trung Ky had passed away. He is resilient to fight against the malignant cancer during the year 2014. Although in this first solo show we cannot showcase the entire works across 40 years of creation. But this is going to be a journey with distinctive works of art in many periods in order to reconstruct a portrait about the art life of special artist from the South citadel.

The Adventure of Color Wheel – Public artwork by Art Labor Collective
Permanent artwork, launched from Wed 21 Jan 2015, 3 pm
Room 3, Pediatrics Department, 3. Floor
Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital
280 Dien Bien Phu Street, District 3, HCMC
The project ‘The adventure of Color Wheel’ is a project creating public artwork, which is initiated and realized by Art Labor collective from July 2014 to January 2015 at Pediatrics Department, HCMC Eye Hospital, with support from Sàn Art, Lions Clubs International Foundation, Kansai Paint, Mango Art Material, Prince Claus Fund, artists Lang Do and Dat Nguyen and architect Oanh Nguyen. The artwork is re-designing the whole space of Pediatrics Department, including mural paintings and drawings, signs, billboards, furniture and more.
For the first time in Vietnam, a health care institution has collaborated with contemporary art practitioners. Ophthalmologists of HCMC Eye Hospital shared their medical knowledge with Art Labor members, introduced the collective to meet their children patients and opened up their therapeutic space for the collective to transform interior architecture. This interdisciplinary collaboration – among visual art, children’s natural mind and medical knowledge has resulted in a unique and friendly environment for the patients, where they receive treatment inside the embrace of artworks.
On Wednesday 21 January 2015, ‘The adventure of Color Wheel’ will be open to the public. Art Labor collective will host a tour introducing the artwork process and guiding visitors through the artwork in this special environment.
Art Labor = art + laboratory = art + workforce
Art Labor, with 3 core members, visual artists Truong Cong Tung, Phan Thao Nguyen and curator/ writer Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran, work in between visual arts, social and life sciences in order to produce alternative non-formal knowledge via artistic and cultural activities. Art Labor’s practices often challenge the norm of exhibition in white-cubed gallery or museum. They change architectural structure of the space, question and transpose the roles of participants in an exhibition, when curator works in artist collective, artists design the exhibition as a curator, or doctors, architects, designers and anthropologists turn to be artistic collaborators.
Music Night with 80s Songs
Fri 23 Jan 2015, 5 pm
Sidewalk
199 Nghi Tam, Hanoi
Hanoi oi! Brace yourself, something big is coming to town! Come to join Music Night with 80s Songs.
As Nick Harkaway put it in his famous book Tigerman, “The ‘80s had never really come to an end.” However, is it a mere coincidence that
number 8 also makes up the symbol of infinity, or does this magic number hold some credits to this eternity?
Nevertheless, this event will take you on a timetravel machine back to the era of arena rock, college rock, glam metal, post-punk and disco, when
David Bowie, The Runaways, The Jackson 5, Cocteau Twins, and Sonic Youth used to grace the stage.
Feeling like stopping at a station? Just drop your request here, or better yet during our live session, and we’ll turn your favourite jam on! Wanna
step forward and join in the fun? There will be games and prizes to be won!
