Come to the next session of Cinexin Hanoi this week with the screening of “Man on Wire”.

On August 7, 1974, a 24-year-old French high-wire artist named Philippe Petit committed one of the most astonishing performance stunts of the late 20th century: he strung a thin cable in between the two towers of the World Trade Center and not only walked across, from one building to another, but did a nerve-wracking series of knee-bends and acrobatic movements on the cable, some 1,350 feet above the ground, before turning himself in. This occurred to the consternation and chagrin of Port Authority policemen, who immediately arrested Petit for the act — prompting many to dub Petit’s stunt “the artistic crime of the century.” James Marsh’s documentary Man on Wire revisits and recounts this chain of events some 34 years after they occurred.

Experimental Music Night continues to push the envelope, this time introducing Vietnamese percussionist Tran Xuan Hoa.

Educated at the musical conservatories in Singapore and Hanoi, Hoa can keep a beat. He’s proven it by being lead percussion player for the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, founding the percussion quartet Go Group and on tour in the US. A versitile performer, Hoa is equally adept at group percussion improvisations, solo shows or live collaborations with electronic musicians and DJs. He’ll be keeping time to Vu Nhat Tan’s sonic explorations. Utilising the full breadth of sound capable of coming out of electronic toys, no two Vu Nhat Tan sets are ever quite the same.

The International Workshop “Art under the Roof” was held at the Muong’s Cultural Museum in Hòa Bình province from 16th to 26th of October 2012. At this museum, in exhibitional display, are half of the artist’s work at Hanoi University of Culture since 16th October. We have exhibited a half of the artist’s work which had been done in the first 6 days in the workshop at Hanoi University of Culture since October 26th. One part is now being stored at the Muong’s Cultural Museum and the other part was taken home by the artist which no one can see. Each artist participating in the workshop, on average, composed two works, some did more painting than other arts sections, and the others who did pottery or sculpture could have a lot or very little, just only one art work.

Therefore, this exhibition aims to introduce the public in Hanoi the unpublished artworks on the occasion of Vietnamese traditional New Year (Tet Holiday) and to support the artistic senses that we have learned about Workshop “Art under the Roof” at Hanoi University of Culture last October.

We are very happy to announce another HanoiTweetUp networking event – the very first one in 2013! The event is sponsored by Grapevine and hosted by Pots ‘n Pans, and will feature a short talk about social media / Twitter by Steve Jackson, a marketing specialist and popular blogger better known as “Our Man in Hanoi”.

Looking back, the first ever HanoiTweetUp happened in May 2011, and brought together more than 30 Twitter users as well as non-Twitter users from 10 different nationalities. We discussed a variety of topics ranging from technology, social media, blogging and photography to food, arts and music. And it was also the first time the Twitterers had the chance to meet their virtual “friends”. Different from Facebook, where you connect with people you already know in real life, Twitter is a platform where you can follow people you don’t know yet and interact with them even before you actually meet them.

HanoiGrapevine joined Twitter in April 2009 and we have built up a strong presence in the Twitter community across the country with more than 2,222 followers. And together with this HanoiTweetUp event we hope to welcome more people to sign up for Twitter to discover this very useful and powerful social tool.

A spectacle is an image that is captured by our eyes. It could be natural, social or human. How a spectacle to be received is not only the matter of itself, but it depends verymuch on our behavior/feeling/ when we receive it.

A sound is a sensory phenomenon listining which we could receive information that is able to evoke feeling and that can re-create forgotten memories.

The concert will have three parts:

Duc and Tung will share their performances and visual artwork, experience and reflections of Myanmar in what is one of the fastest growing nations in South East Asia.

The opera is essentially the Cinderella story, but with a few minor modifications that Rossini deemed were necessary for the opera to flow smoothly. Electronic Music Night with Hien Violino

Experimental Music Night is back and ready to start a new year with fresh Vietnamese sounds and new Hanoian artists.

Making their ATK debut this month is Trinh Minh Hien. Often known as Hien Violino, the electric violinist has a CV to intimidate other musicians that includes being an integral part of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, playing in Japan and America and performing at Tri Minh’s Hanoi Sound Stuff music festival. Hien has been playing violin since she was six and hasn’t limited herself to just classical. She’s been writing her own material since the age of 20, and taken in the genres of pop, jazz, flamenco and country as well as improvised, electric and experimental.
As always, joining Hien Violino will be Vu Nhat Tan with an arsenal of electronic sounds at his disposal. The multi-talented musician is equally adept whether playing classical, improvised, noise, electronic or dance and has an internationally recognised reputation.

Screening of “A Sunday in Hell”

This at once empathetic, mythological approach to cycle racing (with a shift towards a simpler narration) is the same as that of Stars and Watercarriers, but for A Sunday in Hell Jørgen Leth had more than 20 camera units and a helicopter at his disposal.

The film follows the French Paris-Roubaix spring classic, notorious for the hellish paves or cobbled roads of the north “which are no longer used for civilised traffic but only for transporting cattle – and for cycle races”. We are there from the dawn preparations and rituals on the outskirts of Paris and through the rigours of the race with special focus on a number of prominent cyclists to the final outcome on the Roubaix cycle track – followed by the filthy riders taking their showers. There is also an eye for life among the spectators and the media event as such. The chronology is maintained as a basic principle; for this reason the large number of cameramen had to film their watches before each shot. The film alternates among different kinds of shot with a view to establishing the most suitable view of the narrative: shots from motorcycles, which are able to convey the motion of the race and provide close ups of the riders in the style of television cycle race reporting; fixed cameras stationed at strategically important points along the route, where viewers can watch riders passing in real time and thus gain a clear overview of the distance between the leaders and the main field: and the Olympian eye of the helicopter shots. Gunner Møller Pedersen’s music and a very lively sound picture serve the drama and members of the chorus of the Royal Danish Opera use the words “Paris – Roubaix – L’enfer du nord” to add a patina of the sublime. The images of the riders crossing the misshapen cobble sin enormous clouds of dust deserves emphasis as one of the most powerful images ever captured from the world of cycling.

Hanoi DOCLAB & manzi art space proudly presents a talk by Sunjung Kim, Hans De Wolf và Joëlle Tuerlinckx. Sunjung Kim is a Seoul-based curator and Professor at the Korea National University of Arts who has played a pivotal role in linking Korean contemporary art and the international art world.

From 1993 to 2004, she was the Chief Curator at Artsonje Center, Seoul. In 2005, she was the commissioner of the Korean Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale. Also in 2005 she founded SAMUSO: Space for Contemporary Art, a curatorial office based in Seoul. Through SAMUSO Kim established Platform Seoul, an annual art festival. She co-curated “Your Bright Future,” an exhibition of 12 contemporary artists from Korea presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Houston Museum of Fine Arts (2009–10). Kim has also curated solo exhibitions for artists such as In-Hwan Oh, Martin Creed, Beom Kim and Haegue Yang at Artsonje Center. Kim was the Artistic Director of the 6th Seoul International Media Art Biennale – Media City Seoul 2010. Kim is currently a Co-Artistic Director of ROUNDTABLE: The 9th Gwangju Biennale (Korea, 2012).

Hans De Wolf studied history of art and archaeology at the VUB and afterwards at the department of history of art of the Columbia University of New York. Since 2004, he teaches history of art and aesthetics at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). He is the curator of WANDERLUST: A Never Ending Journey to the Other Side of the Hill, an exhibition project developed in Belgium and realized in close collaboration with Samuso in Seoul. It is focused on five major Belgian visual artist, among whom some of the most infuential classical figures in Western art history of the 20th century such as Marcel Broodthaers or Panamarenko.

Joëlle Tuerlinckx was born in Brussels in 1958, where she still lives. Her work has been presented internationally, including, to cite the most recent, at the Reina Sofia, Palacio de Cristal, Madrid (2009), MAMCO, Geneva (2007), The Drawing Center, New York (2006), The Power Plant, Toronto (2005), Ausstellungshalle Münster (2005), The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2003), South London Gallery (2002), Documenta 11, Kassel (2002), Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (2001), Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent (1999) and Witte de With, Rotterdam (1994). She is represented by the Galerie Nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Vienna and the Galerie Christian Nagel, Cologne/Berlin.

Cycling event to benefit wildlife conservation

People who want to show their passion for wild animals and nature are invited to join the "Ride for the Bears" cycling event on January 26.

Hosted by ActionBear Hanoi in-collaboration with the Animals Asia Foundation, the day-long journey aims to raise awareness, especially among young people, of wildlife conservation and environmental protection.

The 124km trip will run from Nghia Do Park in Cau Giay District to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in Vinh Phuc Province's Tam Dao National Park.

The event will also consist of other activities, including visiting the bears and discussions with Animals Asia representatives.

Registration fees cost VND500,000/rider, VND250,000/student and VND100,00/person by car. Kids under 12 are free of charge.

All proceeds will be donated to support the Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.

Bookworm to host early Tet Festival on January 27

The Bookworm in conjunction with the Hanoi Cooking Centre will hold its annual Tet Festival on Sunday.

During the event that opens at 1pm, visitors can learn how to make banh chung (square sticky rice cake) through demonstrations by local villagers, or enjoy to he (rice dough figurines) sculpted by artisans. Local calligraphers will also draw new year messages for visitors while a music trio will perform traditional stringed instruments.

Talk to offer tips for enjoying ‘spa at home'

Friends of Viet Nam Heritage (FVH) – a non-formal group of foreigners living in Ha Noi who work voluntarily to promote and preserve Vietnamese cultural and historical heritage – will host a talk about traditional medicine on Saturday.

Focusing on the theme "spa at home", the talk will introduce traditional skin care herbs and their uses.

Performance to raise funds for orphanage

The American International School will host a charity performance and art exhibition titled One-Act Play Festival at the Ben Thanh Theatre on January 24.

The performance will feature five one-act plays – a mix of dramas and comedies, music, and dance performed by the school's students. Artworks created by students from art classes and clubs will be displayed at the entrance. Food and drinks will also be on sale.

Proceeds from food and drink sales and part of ticket sales will be donated to the Ngai Giao Orphanage in Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province.

Flea market to put in Tet appearance

The monthly Saigon Flea Market will open especially for Tet (Lunar New Year) in District 2 on January 27.

Many Tet products like hampers, flowers and plants, and calligraphy will be sold, as will home decoration items, clothes, and accessories.

There will be traditional games for kids, live music, a lucky draw, and food and drinks.

IDECAF serves up popular French play

Cuisine et Dependances (Kitchen and Dependencies), a well-known French play from the early 1990s by Agnes Jaoui and Jean-Pierre Bacri, will be staged at the Institute of Cultural Exchange with France (IDECAF) on January 28 and 29.

The play is about Jacques and Martine, a wealthy couple, hosting a dinner party for an old friend, Charlotte, who they have not seen for 10 years, and her famous TV personality husband.

The Le Petit-Theatre Troupe, formed by French expatriates living in HCM City, will perform the play.

Hosted walk to discover Ba Dinh Square

Friends of Viet Nam Heritage (FVH) – an informal group of foreigners living in Ha Noi who work voluntarily to promote and preserve Vietnamese cultural and historical heritage – will host a city walk on January 24.

Focused on the Ba Dinh Square area, the tour will start at the historical square to have a look at the Presidential Palace before continuing to the gardens at the back to see late President Ho Chi Minh's stilt house and the One Pillar Pagoda. From the pagoda, visitors will walk to Dien Bien Phu Street to see Ha Noi's famous French villas.

Music night to feature accomplished violinist

The first Experimental Music Night at CAMA ATK, a new event that aims to give a voice to emerging Hanoian musical artists, will feature Trinh Minh Hien – better known as Hien Violino.

Since she started playing violin at the age of 6, Hien hasn't limited herself to a classical repertoire. Pop, jazz, flamenco and country have influenced her style, which is often improvised, electric and experimental.

A member of the Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra, Hien has performed in Japan and America as well as at the Ha Noi Soundstuff Music Festival.

The Experimental Music Night will take place on January 24 from 9-11.30pm at CAMA ATK, 73A Mai Hac De Street. Entrance is free before 8pm, after which tickets cost VND50,000.

Thai DJ to spin Thai, Lao tunes at restaurant

Thai DJ and producer Maft Sai will present Thai funk, or luk thung, and traditional Lao music, or molam, at La Fenetre Soleil restaurant and bar in HCM City on January 25.

According to Maft Sai, the owner of the Bangkok-based Zudrangma record label, luk thung is music that speaks to the daily hardships of everyday people.

HCM City-based DJs Hibiya Line and Superkids will also participate in the show.

Bar to host electronic music, visual arts show

Yoko Bar will host A Year from Wednesday, a performance of visual arts and electronic music on January 23.

The show will feature Tokyo-based sound artist and singer unii. It will be supported with live art and video performances by Un escargot vide (An empty snail) with artist Sebastian Szczyrk of France.

Antiprism and Micmac from France will present electronic and techno music, coupled with visuals.

The performance will open at 9 pm at 22A Nguyen Thi Dieu Street in District 1. Entrance is free.

Brazilian food, samba dancers to be featured

A full-day Brazilian food festival Festa Do Brazil will bring culinary delights, music and dancing to HCM City on January 19.

The festival will offer lunch and dinner buffets with Brazilian-style churrasco. The night will feature performances of samba dancers from the Luna Negra Band and Hot Chicks Band. A lucky draw will also be included.

The festival will be held at Au Lac do Brazil restaurant at 238 Pasteur Street in District 1. The event will take place in Ha Noi on January 26.

Tickets are VND800,000 net/person for lunch and VND1,200,000 net/person for dinner. Part of the ticket proceeds will be donated to Operation Smile Viet Nam.

Street festival to be held at Cultural House

Pro Street Festival, an outdoor activity for the city's youth, will be held at the HCM City Youth Cultural House on January 26.

The Sound We See: A Hanoi City Symphony is a cinematic exploration of the dynamic urban environment of Vietnam’s capital. Please join us for the world premiere of this new film made in partnership with Hanoi DocLab and the Echo Park Film Center (EPFC), a non-profit media arts organization based in Los Angeles.

For the past month, 18 local filmmakers worked together to document the rhythm and movement of daily life in Hanoi from their unique perspectives. Dividing the day into its two-dozen hours, participants shot locations they felt best represented the city at each particular time of day and night with each hour becoming one minute in the final film. The result is a spectacular 24-minute journey through Hanoi as it has never before been experienced.

The Sound We See A Hanoi City Symphony 1

Shot on black and white Super 8 motion picture film and hand-processed by the filmmakers on-site at DocLab, The Sound We See: A Hanoi City Symphony is a truly do-it-yourself production that references the classic cinema of Walter Ruttman’s 1927 masterpiece Berlin: Symphony Of A Great City while exploring new approaches to collaborative creative process and celebrating the energy and possibility of 21st century Hanoi.

The screening will be accompanied by a live score composed specifically for the film by local musicians Luong Hue Trinh, Tri Minh and friends.

The project was made possible by Hanoi Doclab, EPFC, and Goethe Institut Hanoi. Free event; everyone welcome.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam shares the delight of introducing the great street snack from Japan, Takoyaki through a lecture & workshop in Hanoi on Sunday 27 January 2013, organized by the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam.

Takoyaki is a very popular Japanese fast food snack which is made from grilled balls of a wheat flour-based batter with a small piece of octopus inside. Originally from Osaka, Takoyaki is one of the “must” items at special events and festivals all over the Japan to be offered for visitors.

You might fancy that “octopus balls” do not sound delicious but the taste is so yummy that many foreigners have been attracted and became fan of Takoyaki once they have experienced.

It requests us to use a special Takoyaki pan but it is not difficult to master the art of cooking, once you practice well.

In this event, Japanese and Vietnamese specialists from the long-established Japanese restaurant “Kyy” (based in Hanoi) will deliver a lecture to introduce “What is Takoyaki?”, comparing with some popular Vietnamese foods such as Banh Xeo and Pho, followed by a workshop on how to make Takoyaki bringing the special Takoyaki pans from their restaurant. In the end, the participants will enjoy the taste of self-made Takoyakis.

The lecture and workshop will be conducted in Vietnamese three times on Sunday 27 January; Session 1 from 10:00 – 11:30, Session 2 from 13:00 – 14:30 and Session 3 from 15:00 – 16:30. The venue is the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi).

Kijanowska, whose recordings include “The Complete Mazurkas by Szymanowski,” has performed in North and South America, Asia, Europe, New Zealand, Africa and Australia. Hailed by The New York Times as “An excellent young Polish pianist,” she has established herself internationally as a recitalist; chamber musician and concerto soloist. She’s appeared at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall and the Kennedy Center, as well as in venues such as the Amazon basin in Brazil and the Himalayas in Nepal.

Ms. Kijanowska began her musical education in Bielsko-Biała, Poland and she attended the Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice, under the tutelage of Prof. Józef Stompel. After receiving her Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the Music Academy in Wrocław, she was awarded a scholarship to study with Dr. Madeleine Forte (pupil of Alfred Cortot, Rosina Lhevinne and Wilhelm Kempff) at Boise State University in the United States. She holds a Doctorate and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where she studied with Byron Janis (pupil of Vladimir Horowitz and Rosina Lhevinne), Mykola Suk (pupil of Lev Vlasenko), Sara Davis Buechner (pupil of Rudolf Firkušný and Mieczysław Munz) and Marc Silverman.

Ms. Kijanowska is currently a faculty member at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. She is a former faculty member of the University of Richmond in Virginia, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, The Castleman Quartet Program, the Levine School of Music, and the Washington International Piano Festival in Washington D.C.

Influenced by his surroundings (Berlin – famous for its vibrant and adventurous arts scene) and a wide variety of other musical palettes from rock, pop to jazz, Kangding Ray’s music is uniquely situated at the crossroads of digitality and sensitivity. His compositions demonstrate a combination of melodies and machine sounds, integrating guitar loops, massive bass lines, residual noise, acoustic instruments, field recordings and digital anomalies, blending techno grooves with dark textures. Slowly evolving, his live performances are known for intense moments of musical experimentations, completed by intricate sampling of voices and different instrument layers.

Together with his friends from the legendary German label Raster-noton (home to the likes of Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, Byetone, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and others), Kangding Ray has been extensively performing everywhere, from dance clubs to the most prestigious festivals dedicated to alternative arts and culture (London Alphaville, Berlin CTM etc). Author and artist Suzi Garner has collaborated with the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project and her book, ‘The Lonely Langur’, will be launched at Manzi on Friday at 6pm.

The images in the book are photographed from 3 dimensional diaromas constructed by Suzi. These delightful artworks will be exhibited at Manzi and are for sale

Representatives of the Langur Project will be at the launch to highlight the plight of these endangered animals.

Suzi’s first book, ‘A Death In Hanoi’, a short story told in pictures, garnered excellent reviews for its artwork and is a book and art collector’s joy. Her new book is just as rewarding.

Both books are surprisingly inexpensive and profits from ‘The Lonely Langur’ are directed to the Project that is attempting to conserve these endangered animals.

Come to the exhibition One Planet – an exhibition featuring new work by Nguyen Manh Hung –one of Vietnam’s most important young artists. One Planet is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Ho Chi Minh City. A multi-disciplinary artist widely known for his paintings depicting military fighter jet aircraft, Nguyen will present new sculptural installations in this major exhibition that expands on his previous two dimensional work.

Drawing from his own personal history growing up in a cramped Soviet style apartment block in Hanoi, Nguyen reflects on the idea of community, the conflicts that exist within and without constructed societies, and the complexities of civic development and individual responsibility. How is a community defined? Is the traditional idea of community just hollow rhetoric or an ideal that can evolve and adapt to modern day Vietnam? Nguyen confronts these issues with his trademark irony and humor highlighting the oftentimes absurdity of human behavior and endeavor.

Born in Hanoi in 1976, Nguyen Manh Hung has exhibited in a number of regional and international exhibitions including the Goethe-Institut, Hanoi, Vietnam; ARKO Art Center, Seoul, Korea; ifa Galleries, Berlin and Stuttgart, Germany; Stenersenmuseet, Oslo, Norway; ZKM Center for Art and Media; Karlsruhe, Germany; and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, California, USA. Nguyen’s diorama Living in Paradise is currently being featured in the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia.
