The guide has been “one” with the land almost from birth, and is thus able to save his party from perishing. Four years in the making, Dersu Uzala won the 1976 Best Foreign Film Oscar and restored the flagging Akira Kurosawa to the top ranks of the Japanese film industry.

German Film Week
11 – 18 Jan 2013
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
At the beginning of the New Year the Goethe-Institut Hanoi presents a German film week from the 11th of January to the 18h of January, 2013. It shows a colorful mixture of successful German films of the recent years, including some films, which were already presented on the German Film Festival 2012 and were well received from the Vietnamese audience. So anyone who missed the drama “When we leave,”about a young woman between German and Turkish culture, the touching story of “Three fourth moon” and the comedy “Men in the City 2″, has now a second chance.
The documentary “Under Snow” by Ulrike Ottinger is the opening film of the film week and takes the viewer into the archaic world of a mountain village in Japan. Followed by “Barbara”, the most recent film of director Christian Petzold, which tells the story about a young doctor in the DDR and depicts the conflict between staying and leaving. Also the documentary “This is ain`t California” plays in the DDR and is about a clique of friends, who established the skateboarding in East Germany. “Vincent wants to sea” is an award winning, unusual road movie about the Tourette’s syndrome suffering Vincent, who starts a journey to the sea, to spread the ashes of his recently deceased mother.
German Film Week 2
At the screening of „Three Fourths Moon“, Ms. Carmen Oberhofer of German Film Distributor Majestic, who was in charge of the public relations and marketing for the film, will be giving an introduction, talking about the filming and answering questions of the audience. Because of the big success and the high demand at the German Film Festival 2012 we end the film week with the hit comedy “Men in the City 2”.
Furthermore, the young audience could look forward to the most beautiful fairy tale classics: Four fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in the latest film adaption, which will be presented on the first film weekend.

Exhibition “Ulrike Ottinger – Retrospective”
Opening: Fri 11 Jan, 6.30 pm
Film screening: Fri 11 Jan, 7 pm
Exhibition: 12 – 31 Jan 2013
Goethe-Institut Hanoi
56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học, Ba Đình, Hà Nội
The photographer and artist will exhibit a representative selection of her work: portraits, everyday life scenes, architecture and travel photographs. Ulrike Ottinger is regarded as one of the most self-willed German filmmakers of international stature. Her oeuvre spans from the surreal theatrical and stylized artificiality through ethnological portrayals; from the fictional to the documentary.
She finds her motives in Europe, Asia and North America. This exhibition centers on her large-format photographs which often correspond to the film works, but still put their very own visual accents. Regional focal points include China and Mongolia, which Ottinger has visited repeatedly. In the center of her images are the outlandish, offbeat and grotesque of those places. The construction of images often arranged very strictly, contrasting bright colors and unusual style of productions, triggers fear and joy at the same time.
The exhibition has been created in a close collaboration with the artist. After the opening the Goethe-Institut presents Ulrike Ottinger’s„Under Snow” (2011), a documentary film about a mountain village of Japan with magical elements.
Biography
Ulrike Ottinger was born in Konstanz in 1942. She lived in Paris from 1961-69 as a painter and photographer, where she also wrote her first film script »Die mongolische Doppelschublade« Graphic works originated at the Atelier Friedländer. She returned to Germany in 1969, where she founded the film club Visuell in cooperation with a film seminar at the Universität Konstanz. She directed the club until 1972.
She has lived in Berlin since 1973 and works also as a film author and as a director of plays and opera.
Both her films and her photographic work have been shown in numerous retrospectives and exhibitions, including at the Venice Biennale (1980), at the Cinémathèque française, Paris (1980, 1982), at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2000, 2004), at the Kunst-Werke Berlin (2001).
