He was born in the Czech Republic, but began his career in Germany and can now be heard in numerous concert halls in Europe. Currently he is principal horn in the Konzerthausorchester in Berlin. Among the works with which he became well known is the Horn Concerto No. 2 by Richard Strauss, with which he won the ARD Music Competition in 2010. “Vietnam, from a less known myth”

Due to limited space, please register via this link.

Program outline:

1) Vietnam territory ‘opening’ myth seen from Cham perspective

2) Cham’s OPENING spirit

Vietnam was united from three ancient kingdoms, which is a rare thing. 54 relative ethnic groups, each with its own distinctive cultural heritage, all share one Vietnam, which is even rarer. Realizing this fact in order to know that 3 ‘kingdoms’ and 54 peoples help enrich Vietnam’s multi-ethnic culture, not the contrary. Thanks to this characteristic, Vietnam’s culture is greatly diversified.

Speaker’s information:

Inrasara is a famous Cham poet, translator, researcher and critic.

Come to “The Cosmos and The Sea” – a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Christine Nguyen. A noted artist known for works that draw upon the imageries of science and nature, Christine Nguyen will present a collection of new and recent photo-based work ranging from intimate c-prints to ambitious mural-size work.

Combining drawing with photographic techniques, Christine Nguyen has developed a pioneering practice centered on the manipulation and layering of negatives. Her work revolves around the imaginings of an organic prism, a dream-like world where oceans merge with outer space. Her works depict ferocious ocean currents, meandering creatures, iridescent flora, spiny strata of rocks and other fantastical imagery, each performing a distinctive act in the collective formulation of a mysterious ecosphere. As our vision fluctuates between the micro- and macroscopic, shifting between the primordial organisms dwelling at the bottom of the sea and the gossamer beings floating in the midst of the universe, the complex multilayered works speak volumes about our infinitesimal juxtapositions vis-à-vis the natural world.

Nguyen relentlessly explores the frontier of her materials. Through the development of a personal cosmology where “commonalities among species, forms, and environments become visible and expressive,” she creates works that defy the conventional conceptions of time and space. The quintessential concoction of a mystical bionetwork beyond earthly limits is a suggestion of both past narratives and future possibilities.

The phantasmagorical sensations brought about by her works are sprinkles of stardust into the imaginary world inside our head, a soothing call for the resurgence of our quiet inner child.

Christine Nguyen will be giving an artist talk on Tuesday, the 9th of December 2014 at the Goethe-Institut in Hanoi.

Every year again – Goethe-Institut is bringing a first-class German band in December as Christmas present to the youngsters. Goethe-Institut Vietnam in cooperation with Meta-House in Phnom Penh and Goethe-Institut Manila invited the band STABIL ELITE to play in Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines.

Eight concerts as well as meetings and talks at the PASCH partner schools are planned. And as a special highlight there will be iPad supported music workshops for young music enthusiasts.

The band comprises live five young men in their mid-twenties. They are highly talented musicians altogether: Lukas Croon, Martin Sonnensberger, Nikolai Szymanski, Lukas Heerich (live) und Timo Hein (live). They were decorated and celebrated as the future stars on the sky of the extraordinarily successful electro pop in Germany.

STABIL ELITE presents an electrifying combination of bass, guitars, drums, synthesizer, sitar and – surprise! – one can also hear wood and metal in their music. The dynamic soundscapes are intensified by the hypnotizing festoons and collages of their lyrics – German gets really different for once. You will listen to STABIL ELITE once and forever! Some music critics even associate the band with legendary musicians such as KRAFTWERK, NEU! and D.A.F., but STABIL ELITE are actually simply inimitable new.

The band celebrated their first big success with the hit “Gold” in 2011. And in 2013 they had their big break through with the album “Douze Pouze”, which they released at the Berlin music label Italic Recordings. And now in 2014 STABIL ELITE is live in Southeast Asia.

Exhibition: 03 – 07 Dec 2014, 9 am – 7 pm

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyễn Thái Học

Ba Đình, Hà Nội

Recently in Vietnam and around the world, photography has evolved as an effective method in raising awareness of global social issues. The most commonly used tool, known as Photovoice, empowers marginalized people by allowing them to reclaim their voice. This method of communication effectively reveals the raw truth about communities all over the world and inspires individuals and communities to take action for the greater public good.

“Dad, I wish…” is a collection of 23 stories revealing the hardship of young boys facing domestic violence within their own homes. Domestic violence affects men and women from all geographical locations and socioeconomic statuses. The stories depicted in “Dad, I wish…” were discovered in the cities and farmlands of Ha Noi, Ha Nam, Hoa Binh, Hung Yen, and Bac Ninh revealing the far spread impacts of domestic violence. The stories, accompanied by powerful images, expose the trauma endured by the boys evoking a range of emotions from viewers.

With the artistic support of the photographer, Nguyen The Son, “Dad, I wish…” helps the children voice their wishes of having a model father, and a happy family. A loving father is often considered to be the reality for children, however, for many it remains nothing more than a dream. The story of these 23 boys exposes only a fraction of the faces of young children left dreaming with broken hearts. “Daddy, I wish…” is not only a message to the community, but also a call on the government to increase participation executing laws that promote gender equality and prevent domestic violence. The exhibition is inspired by the UNFPA, Atlantic Philanthropy and Canada Embassy sponsored campaign, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign 2014.
