Hanoi Rock City New Year Eve Countdown Party

Tue 31 Dec 2013, 9 pm

Hanoi Rock City

27/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho

A HRC NYE count down to get your pants in a twist and your feet in a swirly whirly. Here are some of the signs that you’re in for the hottest giddy musical get up, popping 2014 into its slot in style.

:: Axon. Savour the flavours for this HRC debutan who will rip open 2014 like a rugrat to his presents on Christmas morning. Axon has had a number of releases on various respectable labels: Invisible Recordings (Noisia), Proximity (Basher) and Demand Records. Axon’s records have been played on the three biggest dance music radio stations in the UK: BBC Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra and Kiss FM. Spinning from various venues across Europe and Asia, including the iconic Ministry of Sound, Hanoi Rock City is privileged to have Axon to host the last party of 2013.

:: So Good Fusion. The boys who killed it at Rock City’s mid December birthday party. These outstanding instrumentalists left the crowd screaming for a ten minute violin, bass, drum, keyboard rumbling encore. A total ear clinger. Who needs vocals anyway?

:: Pandrava. Her acclaimed DJ sets are pushing up the ranks and getting popular with the party going massive in Hanoi. Spinning all circles from the heavy bass universe, from Drum n Bass to Jungle classic, Pandrava first appeared on the Vietnam scene way back when Hanoians were getting excited over the sound of dubstep and a dubby snare drum.

:: Hi-Jinks. Sackful of talent, pocketfuls of sing-with-me-baby funk, fun and live energy. Music that gets at you from the hips and lets everything else fall into place.

Tickets: VND50K (free entry before 10PM)

About Once

Once is a musical film set in Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

It tells the story of an Irishman, played by Glen Hansard, who plays the guitar on a popular shopping street in Dublin, and a young Czech flower-seller, played by Marketa Irglova. The Irishman and Czech girl start talking and discover their mutual interest in music. Together, they sing and play music and the story follows them as they record a demo CD together. This is also a tale of unrequited romance.

Made in Ireland on a shoestring budget, with the support of the Irish Film Institute, the film features scenes of Dublin city and beautiful music by its musician stars. It received the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song. It has recently been made into a Broadway Musical.

About A Very Long Engagement

A Very Long Engagement (French: Un long dimanche de fiançailles) is a 2004 French romantic war film, co-written and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou. It is a fictional tale about a young woman’s desperate search for her fiancé who might have been killed in theBattle of the Somme, during World War I. It was based on a novel of the same name, written by Sebastien Japrisot, first published in 1991.

Screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life”

Fri 20 Dec 2013, 7.30 pm

Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents

51 Tran Hung Dao Str (4th floor), Hanoi

Following 2 film screenings about love last week, we are pleased to introduce the screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life” themed on Christmas, directed by Frank Capra.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American Christmas fantasy comedy-drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra, based on the short story “The Greatest Gift”, which Philip Van Doren Stern wrote in 1939 and privately published in 1945. The film is considered one of the most loved films in American cinema and has become traditional viewing during the Christmas season, alongside popular classics such as Holiday Inn, A Christmas Carol, White Christmas, Meet Me in St. Louis and Miracle on 34th Street.

The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams in order to help others and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers). Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be had he never been born.

Despite initially performing poorly at the box office due to high production costs and stiff competition at the time of its release, the film has come to be regarded as a classic and is a staple of Christmas television around the world. Theatrically, the film’s break-even point was actually $6.3 million, approximately twice the production cost, a figure it never came close to achieving in its initial release. An appraisal in 2006 reported: “Although it was not the complete box office failure that today everyone believes … it was initially a major disappointment and confirmed, at least to the studios, that Capra was no longer capable of turning out the populist features that made his films the must-see, money-making events they once were.”

It’s a Wonderful Life is considered one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. It was nominated for five Oscars and has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, placing number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, and would also place number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

The screening is for educational purpose, entrance is free, though guests are welcome to donate to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

Film screening and discussions on topic “Images of gay and transgender people in Vietnamese contemporary cinema”

Vietnamese filmmakers have been paying more attention to the topic of gay and transgender in recent years. LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people) characters are being portrayed and appear briefly on both television and motion picture screens. The topics of gender and sexuality are also mentioned more than before in media in Vietnam. Feature films “Chơi vơi” (Adrift, 2009) by director Bùi Thạc Chuyên, and “Bi, Đừng Sợ!” (Bi, Don’t be Afraid, 2010) by director Phan Đăng Di brought home awards from renowned international film festivals. Director Vũ Ngọc Đãng’s “Hot boy nổi loạn” (Lost in Paradise, 2011) brought the film to both international and domestic audience. Most recently, gay people, as portrayed in both foreign and Vietnamese characters, are featured in director Hàm Trần’s “Âm mưu giầy mũi nhọn” (High heels’ plot, 2013). The movie has gained success as one of the latest productions in Vietnam so far.

Through the demonstration of LGBTs in cinema, we hope to discuss about LGBTs and gender equality through cinema language and popular culture in our event. With this talk, a broader audience of both cinephiles, art lovers, LGBT people and heterosexuals, and anyone who cares about gender equality could join us to discuss more about the topics of: How LGBTs are being portrayed in film screen? Does cinematic representation of LGBT people manipulate, discriminate, or protect their rights and encourage them to raise gender equality awareness? How social, political, and economical influences have shaped their images? What do these movies tell us about LGBT communities in Vietnam? What do they tell us about the relationship between our dominating culture (where heterosexuals make the norms) and the LGBTs? And what action can we take to fight against any discrimination towards the LGBT people?

The program:

3pm-5pm

Renowned film director Phan Đăng Di will give a talk about “Images of gay and transgender people in Vietnamese contemporary cinema: Rebellion within frames”. Marcus Mạnh Cường Vũ – Festival Director of Yxine Film Fest – an annual online international short film festival will be the moderator of the following discussion.

5pm-6pm

Coffee break, light refreshments

6pm-8.30pm

Screening of Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s documantary “Love Man Love Woman” (2007, 52 minutes).

A panel discussion on topics of gay and transgender people in the popular Mother Goddess Religion – Đạo Mẫu, with the film director Nguyễn Trinh Thi, guest speaker Phạm Quỳnh Phương (ISEE) and moderated by Đặng Hoàng Giang will take place after the screening.

Summary:

In this documentary, the filmmaker follows Master Lưu Ngọc Đức, one of the most prominent spirit mediums in Hanoi, and his vibrant community through their rituals and everyday life. The film explores how effeminate and gay men in homophobic Vietnam have traditionally found community and expression in the country’s popular Mother Goddess Religion, Dao Mau.

The screening and discussion is the first event of ‘QUEER FOREVER!” Art Festival that will take place on 14-31 Dec. 2013 in Hanoi.
