Hanoi Musician Launches Debut Solo Album
Hanoi musician Michelle Stewart prepares to release her first fully-produced album, Sands of Time. Stewart has been living and performing her music in Hanoi since 2009.
The 12-track album was produced by famous Thai producer, Thananat Peerayagangvanglai from DBS Studio Bangkok, while Stewart is the sole musician on the album, as well as the songwriter, composer, arranger, and co-producer. The album will be released on December 10, 2012.
Sands of Time will be available on iTunes, Amazon.com, CDbaby.com, Spotify, and more, for $9.99. The album includes full lyrics with special photos from the magical place where it was all made.
Sands of Time was inspired in the northern Thai countryside of Pai, Mae Hong Son Province, where Stewart visited twice before finalizing the recording for all tracks in Bangkok. Four songs featured on the album were written in Hanoi.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam and Nhasan Studio proudly present two contemporary art exhibitions, “Measuring the World” by Nguyen Huy An, Yuichiro Tamura, Kumpei Miyata and “Utopia” by Tuan Mami from 12 December 2012 – 6 January 2013 in Hanoi.
In “Measuring the World”, three artists from Japan and Vietnam will provoke you to re-think about the size and scale of the world around us, through their art works.
Nguyen Huy An measures the height of the Hanoi’s tallest skyscraper with pieces of paper and folds the pieces of paper into simple shapes. A newly-made paper installation will be exhibited.
Kumpei Miyata, meanwhile, tries to feel the world through his own eyes and with his whole body. In 31 October 2010, he left his home in Fukuoka for Lulea City in Sweden, telling his friend in Lulea by phone that he is coming to Lulea. Finally in 3 December 2010, via 18 countries without taking any airplanes, he arrived at the final destination. He will share this long journey with you through his video installation “I’m sorry for being late”.
Kumpei will also do the daily exercise to jump over the self-made jumping box in front of the exhibition hall.
Yuichiro Tamura, on the other hand, creates a video work without shooting any images but with using available online images from the Google Street View site. This award-winning road movie “NIGHTLESS” will be shown.
In “Utopia”, Tuan Mami will create a new land in the Japan Foundation Library by covering its floor with 100 kg of rice seeds and a thick sheet of glass. This installation aims to create a utopia space within a normal library. This large-scale installation is a part of his on-going project “Untouched Paradise” which aims to invite the visitors to come close to the created paradise resulting in irritation with not being able to touch it.
The pressed rice seeds by glass will grow even without water and soil day by day throughout the exhibition duration. The visitors might paradoxically feel the freedom of the rice plants that grow in such difficult conditions as well as the risky and impossible temptation of touching to feel the rice plant. This installation is conducted specially for elder mothers including Mami’s mother herself who live in Hanoi. By inviting them to this exhibition to enjoy arts, Tuan Mami would like to show to the audiences the definition of social view while explaining the “appearance/disappearance’ structure of an artwork.
These two exhibitions are the part of the project “Skylines With Flying People” which is a multiplex project of contemporary art. For more information on the whole project and schedule, please visit our websites at:

HRC turns two years old this December and is celebrating with two huge free parties on 8th and 15th December under the title ‘UR2’. The parties honour the diversity of current and contemporary music and creative arts we embrace as a promoter and our emphasis on providing a solid, stable and dynamic creative platform for homegrown, grassroots talent as an arts space.
The main party will take place on Saturday 8th December followed by a Bass Streets Aftershock focusing purely on electronic music on Saturday 15th December. Both events are being headlined by quality international acts and will be joined by an array of Hanoi’s finest local talents including the likes of Tri Minh, Raggamuffins, Sebastien Gesell, Phuong Dang, Vu Nhat Tan, DJ Y (VN Tribes), Cybersnake, Inklings, Dirty Fingrz and more. Film by The Onion Cellar, live painting, fashion, vjing and interactive art activities will add a unique visual splash to the events.

Headlining on the 8th December are Berlin electronic reggae bigshots Illbilly Hitec feat. Longfingah. Illbilly Hitec mix reggae and electronics, blending influences of dub, breakbeat, hiphop and jungle. Made up of live drums, electronic sounds, heavy offbeats and sublimely selected reggae classic samples, cut into with chasey live vocals to create fat dance tunes and a gripping live performance that is made to make you move. The band’s first groove-induced EP “BadBoyBass”, several vinyl releases and growing feedback on their concerts in Europe, India, Japan and Mexico are all pointing towards one thing: Illbilly Hitec are arguably the most exciting newcomers of their genre from Germany. SEEED, the biggest name on the German reggae market has singled the group out as raw talent and is working on a remix of their upcoming single “Augenbling”. The group will be performing at HRC fronted by the supremely talented reggae singer Longfingah (Dubmatic, Mungos HiFi).

At Bass Streets on 15th, we welcome award-winning DJ Chamber from Bristol, UK, to burn up the dance floor. Chamber is a founder of Bass Kitchen Worldwide and was voted Best Breaks DJ in the world at Breakspoll 2011. He has shared the stage across the globe alongside many of the electronic music scenes biggest artists such as Beardyman, Orbital, Benga, Dilated Peoples, Plump DJs, DJ Vadim, Ed Solo, Adam F, Donaeo, Stanton Warriors, Atomic Hooligan, The Freestylers, Benny Page, Lee Coombs, DJ Yoda, A Skillz, Freq Nasty, J Majik, Baobinga, Rennie Pilgrem, Jon Carter, General Midi, The Breakfastaz, Fabio & Grooverider and many more.
With tracks coming out on Mutated Sounds, Kick It Recordings and Unstable Label as well as gigs across China, Australia, South Korea, the Philippines and Thailand in early 2012 alone, this has been Chamber’s year. Projects Abroad is an English, family run organization, bringing volunteers from Developed countries into Developing countries. Our volunteers work in a variety of different placements, ranging from hospitals, to schools and Orphanages. At the moment, we are trying to help to improve the lives of the children at an Orphanage at Bo De Pagoda.

Come to the screening of “Little Girl of Hanoi” (73 minutes) - one of the most remarkable movies ever made anywhere during wartime— full of exquisite and startling images. It was produced in 1973 by veteran director Hai Ninh.
Filmed amid the rubble of a recently bombed Hanoi, this harrowing tale of a girl searching for her soldier father after losing the rest of her family during a bombardment is a powerful drama and a very rare look at life in the city during the Vietnam War.
The film won the Golden Lotus honor for best feature film at the Vietnam Film Festival in 1975.
Lan Huong, the artist who played the Little Girl will be able to attend the screening and take part in the question and answer session afterwards.

About Type Directors Club (TDC)
The Type Directors Club is the leading international organization whose purpose is to support excellence in typography, both in print and on screen. Founded in 1946, the TDC’s earliest membership included leading designers such as Aaron Burns, Will Burtin, Freeman Craw, Louis Dorfsman, Gene Federico, Edward M. Gottschall, Herb Lubalin, Edward Rondthaler, Bradbury Thompson, and Hermann Zapf. Every year, the TDC simultaneously holds two type competitions: one for the use of type and letterforms in design, and the other for the design of typefaces. HCMC – Screening of VALTARI FILM EXPERIMENT

The Onion Cellar proudly presents an official showcase of Sigur Rós’ VALTARI FILM EXPERIMENT in HCMC. The event is organized in collaboration with Saigon Outcast. The film was also screened in Hanoi on 06 Dec.
It has been a while since that screening of INNI at Hanoi Cinemathèque. The first ever Onion Cellar event. I had no idea if we would make it this far.
Fast forward to the current days, on the back of a string of exciting Cellar happenings over the last 12 months (and new connections and friendships that mean more to me than any so-called success), it is only fitting to celebrate the ‘one year later’ with another SIGUR RÓS screening. After all, who doesn’t love those Icelandic dreamers?
Upon the release of their latest album Valtari, SIGUR RÓS gave a dozen filmmakers the same modest budget and asked them to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from the album. The idea was to bypass the usual artistic approval process and allow people utmost creative freedom. Among the filmmakers are Alma Har’el, Andrea Arnold, Floria Sigismondi, Ramin Bahrani, and John Cameron Mitchell. At the same time, the band invited fans to contribute their own personal creations.
The weekend of December 7 – 9, a VALTARI FILM EXPERIMENT program collects at least 17 commissioned “official” and fan-created short films created to coincide with the album VALTARI. The program will screen on all seven continents (including Antarctica). Venues will include cinemas, cinema-like spaces, rock clubs, Native American casinos, hardware stores, hairdresser salons, and beyond.

The photography exhibition titled “Involvements for Peace” is a collection of photographs to tell the stories of many people who are suffering from the war remnants and landmine action of MAG and the positive impacts of these actions towards the economic and social development. The exhibition showcases 62 photographs taken by Sean Sutton, Aidan Dockery (UK) and Na Son (Vietnam).
The exhibition also displays pictures of activities of MAG – a non-profit organization which assists people in Vietnam affected by landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and SALW (Small Arms Light Weapons) since 1999.

Sàn Art seeks your application for ‘Sàn Art Laboratory: Session 3’!
Begun in May 2012, ‘Sàn Art Laboratory’ is Vietnam’s first studio/residency program, initiated and managed by Sàn Art, in Ho Chi Minh City. It aims to provide 3 Vietnamese artists (under 35) with studio and living space for 6 months each. An additional studio and apartment is dedicated to international residents
During each ‘lab session’ (residency period), participating Vietnamese artists must be willing to participate in regular writing and discussion regarding their work and ideas with a specific ‘talking partner’.
Successful Vietnamese applicants will be granted USD1000 production money, a studio to make their art, separate living quarters and a small living allowance.
Each lab session will end with a group exhibition at Sàn Art showcasing realized work.
The ‘Sàn Art Laboratory’ Advisory Board’ will assess all applications for successful applicants.

Three very different musicians from the Hanoi underground come together for a night of experimental DJ-ing and sound mixing.

Giuliana Soscia: accordionist, pianist and composer, she was awarded in 2001 the “Sonerfisa” Trophy in Castelfidardo, International Award for Best Italian accordionist, in 2005 the prestigious “XXXV European Personality Prize” at the Capitol in Rome. She is the first accordionist to join the prestigious Jazz Festival Lucca.
Pino Jodice Graduated in piano in 1987 he is currently Professor of Jazz Composition at the “D. Cimarosa” Music Academy in Avellino. Founder and Director of “Power Jazz Unusual Orchestra”. He won several international competitions for jazz orchestra composition and arrangement, he was awarded the “Positano Jazz Prize” as best new Italian talent in 2002.
Giuliana Soscia & Pino Jodice Duet: established in 2006, the group is engaged in an intense concert activity in the most important Jazz and music festivals.
“Tango from Naples to Buenos Aires”: The musical project addresses jazz versions of the two great masters Astor Piazzolla and Roberto De Simone: The two artists, with their passionate creativity, enclose and give a meaning to culture cohesion in a very similar way. Both had understood that traditions can lose their meaning if they become a habit. Giuliana Soscia and Pino Jodice highlight the importance of discussing on these issues and think over their importance.

The Onion Cellar proudly presents an official showcase of Sigur Rós’ VALTARI FILM EXPERIMENT at Goethe Institut Hanoi. The event is organized in collaboration with Hanoi DocLab.
It has been a while since that screening of INNI at Hanoi Cinemathèque. The first ever Onion Cellar event. I had no idea if we would make it this far.
Fast forward to the current days, on the back of a string of exciting Cellar happenings over the last 12 months (and new connections and friendships that mean more to me than any so-called success), it is only fitting to celebrate the ‘one year later’ with another SIGUR RÓS screening. After all, who doesn’t love those Icelandic dreamers?
Upon the release of their latest album Valtari, SIGUR RÓS gave a dozen filmmakers the same modest budget and asked them to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from the album. The idea was to bypass the usual artistic approval process and allow people utmost creative freedom. Among the filmmakers are Alma Har’el, Andrea Arnold, Floria Sigismondi, Ramin Bahrani, and John Cameron Mitchell. At the same time, the band invited fans to contribute their own personal creations.
The weekend of December 7 – 9, a VALTARI FILM EXPERIMENT program collects at least 17 commissioned “official” and fan-created short films created to coincide with the album VALTARI. The program will screen on all seven continents (including Antarctica). Venues will include cinemas, cinema-like spaces, rock clubs, Native American casinos, hardware stores, hairdresser salons, and beyond.

A large Vietnamese ex-pat community now lives in Germany, and presently constitutes the largest non-European immigrant group in Berlin. Yet what happens when – despite the better educational prospects, higher quality goods, and measure of social security that Germany may offer – a yearning persists among immigrants for the land of their ancestors?
Berlin-based photographer Nora Bibel visited Vietnam in 2009, to work on a book project sponsored by the German Foreign Office and produced by GCREP (German Conservation Restoration & Education Projects). Fascinated by the country, she returned in 2010, and spent a month getting to know a broad range of Vietnamese returnees, and taking photographs of them.
In cooperation with her subjects, she staged scenes depicting traces of homes “with a foot in two cultures,” so to speak, which thus prompted questions of universal relevance on the nature of home. Although the scenes in each image are staged and, in certain cases, artificially lit, they appear to have arisen spontaneously and by chance – as if everyone, for a brief moment, had put everyday life on hold, so as to think about the broader meaning of his or her life. Closeness to the person portrayed is paramount. “Bielefeld School” is how photographer Nora Bibel sums up this very special mix of precision, aesthetics and laconism. She also briefly interviewed her subjects about their biographies and motives for moving. And thus clearly communicates what “home” means to each one of them.
The exhibition is presented courtesy of the German Embassy in Vietnam, with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Vietnamese-German Centre.

Skylines With Flying People is a multiplex project of contemporary art in which art practitioners collectively work for achieving one primal mission: To explore the alternative methods of art-creation and team-working.
Curated by Nguyen Phuong Linh, various projects will go on simultaneously, ranging from renovation of space, open-studios, exhibitions, performances to artist talks and documentation of the whole projects.
One of the highlights in this event is the open-studio project. In this open-studio project, which is widely known in the world but rarely practiced in Vietnam, around 10 participating artists will stay and work at each “dream-come-true” studio constructed in the Japan Foundation to present archives of past works as well as “work-in-progress” productions. For those enthusiastic visitors, you can enjoy conversations with each artist to know further about their inspirations for creating arts, as well as to discuss about future creative plans.
The other side of the highlight is the exclusively constructed studios for the participating artists. Tsuneo Noda, a first-grade architect from Japan who successfully renovated old buildings into sustainable collective studios for all kinds of creators in Japan, will smartly renovate existing rooms and cleverly construct structures in the Japan Foundation, to realize the ideal studios which the participating artists discuss about and dream to work at.

We do hope that the uniquely constructed studios will become stimulating platforms to inspire not only the art practitioners involved but also all visitors to communicate with each other and exchange ideas and thoughts on contemporary arts in Vietnam.

1. Renovation of spaces

Tsuneo Noda (Architect) will renovate existing spaces and construct structures in several areas of the Japan Foundation in order to create studios for the participating artists. He will basically cover the whole spaces of the Japan Foundation with simple wooden pallets which can symbolize the platform to connect each studio and visitors. Interviews with Mr. Noda, photo takings, TV recordings are welcome during the process of renovation.
2. Open Skylines

3. Open Studio

The participating artists will stay and work at each studio to present the archives of past works, to show “work-in-progress” productions, as well as to communicate with visitors. You can visit anytime at any of the studios during their opening hours.

Information Center
This room includes: an office for curators, a public space for all the visitors, for coffee, tea and snacks, schedule boards of the whole projects, displays by Lai Dieu Ha, Nguyen Quoc Thanh, art doll decorations by Tran Thu Hang and creative products from Tohoku region in Japan through Tohoku-Kyushu Project (*).
*Tohoku-Kyushu Project is a 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake reconstruction support project which aims to create jobs for artists and designers in Tohoku region (northeast of Japan) who lost most opportunities and channels to sell their creative products after the Earthquake. The project members in Kyushu region (southwest of Japan) have invited creators from Tohoku to several cities in Kyushu in order to promote and sell their products as well as to hold a series of talks by cultural experts from Tohoku region. Some of such products from Tohoku will be exhibited and sold at this Information Center for Skylines With Flying People project.
MAC (Mami Art Center) Hanoi
This room is run by Tuan Mami and Hiroyuki Hattori. It aims to be an experimental and alternative space for contemporary art by conducting the following activities: artist talks, dialogues, presentations and recordings/archives.
Media Lab
This studio is shared by 3 artists in media art, Nguyen Trinh Thi, Jamie Maxtone Graham and Yuichiro Tamura. They will shoot the videos & photos with visitors and show the process of editing their videos & photos. The following video and photo works will be also screened regularly:

Mini Theatre
This small theatre is run by the artist collective, Appendix. Appendix designed a simple theater by using Vietnamese traditional mattress as a measuring unit. They will carefully construct meditative, near theatrical scenes. They will screen the video of their past performances.
Family Kitchen
This studio with cooking facilities is run by Nguyen Hong Ngoc. She will cook and serve foods to her selected visitors every day.
Sewing Factory
This studio with sewing equipment is run by Lai Dieu Ha and Nguyen Quoc Thanh. Lai Dieu Ha will carefully make sculptural white dresses in great detail, while Nguyen Quoc Thanh will create a series of uniforms which are used for different functions and contexts.
Mobile Gallery “ESCAPE”
A 3-wheels car is transformed into a mobile gallery at which Nguyen Tran Nam will work and exhibit his works. Some of his video works will be installed inside the car and this mobile gallery will go around Hanoi.
Gymnastic Field
One area of the courtyard in the Japan Foundation will be used by Kumpei Miyata for his physical exercise. He will vault over a self-made jumping box every day, making the box higher and higher by piling up more boxes on each day.

Exhibition I: Measuring the World

The three artists are different in selected media and usages of materials, but their creations all move towards the same direction: Measuring and grasping the world by their own units and re-building the world in their own interpreted ways.
Nguyen Huy An measures the height of the Hanoi’s tallest skyscraper with pieces of paper and folds the pieces of paper into simple shapes. A newly-made paper installation will be exhibited.
Kumpei Miyata, meanwhile, tries to feel the world through his own eyes and with his whole body. In 31 October 2010, he left his home in Fukuoka for Lulea City in Sweden, telling his friend in Lulea by phone that he is coming to Lulea. Finally in 3 December 2010, via 18 countries without taking any airplanes, he arrived at the final destination. He will share this long journey with you through his video installation “I’m sorry for being late”.
Yuichiro Tamura, on the other hand, creates a video work without shooting any images but with using available online images from the Google Street View site. This award-winning road movie “NIGHTLESS” will be shown.
The past but representative works of these three artists will provoke you to re-think about the size and scale of the world around us.

This exhibition is an installation by Tuan Mami who creates a new land in the Japan Foundation Library by covering its floor with 100 kg of rice seeds and a thick sheet of glass. This installation aims to create a utopia space within a normal library. This large-scale installation is a part of his on-going project “Untouched Paradise” which aims to invite the visitors to come close to the created paradise resulting in irritation with not being able to touch it.
Mami provokes the visitors to look back at our current behavior. Aren’t we always looking forward to a better future but regretting our past at the same time? How wonderful, how beautifully difficult, how sane and therefore real: a field of rice plant existing in a library. The pressed rice seeds by glass will grow even without water and soil day by day throughout the exhibition duration. The visitors might paradoxically feel the freedom of the rice plants that grow in such difficult conditions as well as the risky and impossible temptation of touching to feel the rice plant. This installation is conducted specially for elder mothers who live in Hanoi. By inviting them to this exhibition to enjoy arts, Tuan Mami would like to show to the audiences the definition of social view while explaining the “appearance/disappearance’ structure of an artwork.

Curator Susanne Husse will give an introduction to the exhibition SAY IT LOUD. on words and actions on 03.12 at Goethe-Institut Hanoi. Recently shown at District Berlin, the exhibition investigates the extent to which language is used in the construction of public identities and as a medium of social interaction. This talk is related to the art projectSkyline with Flying People curated by Linh Nguyen who will give an introduction and participate in the subsequent discussion.
SAY IT LOUD. on words and actions, was an art project at District Kunst- und Kulturförderung in Berlin in October 2012, with 12 international artists assembled by the curators Susanne Husse, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and Megan Marissa Steinman,. The various works in the exhibition reflected critically on the essential character of speech and text while simultaneously pointing out their inherent power relationships. In the context of contemporary communications, which increasingly prefer text-based interaction to physical communication, SAY IT LOUD asks artists and their audiences to question both the hierarchies and possibilities woven into the relationship between words and actions.
Biography:
Susanne Husse (born 1982 in Görlitz) studied literature and linguistic sciences, cultural management (M.A.), art history and philosophy in Rome and Berlin. She has worked since 2008 as an independent curator and author in Berlin. In 2009 and 2010 she was curatorial adviser and production manager for Hörspielpark Berlin. From 2008 to 2011 she was a member of Berlin Kunsthalle e.V. where, under the title The Arts and the City, she organised conferences, workshops and interventions at the interface between art, urban spaces, experimental exchange formats and community-based artistic engagement. In 2012 she was granted a lectureship at the Berlin Weißensee School of Art.

There have been walls either demolished or still existing in this world. All of them were and have been built on blood and sorrow of mankind. But not only walls made of steel and concrete, also virtual boundaries, such as prejudice, discrimination and ignorance of human feeling exist in the minds of society.
Also the life of the artist Le Huy Hoang was inspired by the Cambodian genocide during the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia by a border and engages this theme in his art. For the first time the Goethe-Insitute shows his installation art project The Wall. As shown in its name, this art installation is a high wall made out of bones pointing out the human’s cruelty and the meaninglessness of war.

As a Cambodian- Vietnamese artist, this artwork of mine was originally inspired by the Cambodian genocide during the Pol Pot regime. From the beginning, this was just a story of an individual feeling and a story of my coutries Cambodia and Vietnam in this tragic time.

However, the further I researched, the more I realised that the world has had the same sorrow.
There have been walls either demolished or still existing, either physical or virtual, in this world. They are the Berlin wall, the border between North and South Korea, the Gaza strip, the Ben Hai river which separated the North and South of Vietnam before 1975- all of them were and have been built on blood and sorrow of mankind.
Also, for me and for many people, “the wall’ is often used as the metaphor for isolation, block or denial of an individual or a community. There’s also, of course, always a wall inside each person, which could be prejudice, or discrimination or ignorance of human feeling.
As shown in its name, this art installation is a high wall made out of bones pointing out the human’s cruelty and the meaninglessness of war.
I believe the artwork will show some aspects of human sorrow. I hope the audiences and the Vietnamese art community will share and appreciate the idea of the work.

Trinh Cong Son (1939 – 2001) was a Vietnamese composer, musician, painter and songwriter. He wrote over 500 songs. Many of Trinh’s songs are love songs. Others are anti-war songs, written during and about the Vietnam War; some of them were censored by the southern Republic of Vietnam and later by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Come to the opening of exhibition to discover the work of Colin Christy, artist in residence at la 4uatrieme.
Colin Christy is an artist who makes site-specific sculptures, installations, and drawings that combine natural and artificial materials using different techniques to create pieces that change and discover themselves over time.
He has recreated and destroyed burial mounds in St. Louis, transplanted river-side ecosystems to Oakland, and made guerrilla sculptures in the streets of Florence. He moved to Hanoi from Oakland in the summer of 2012 to explore collaborations with other artists working in Vietnam.

The photograph exhibition of Sébastien Laval reveals another side of Hanoi at night when the light shows different colours.
The exhibition showcases photographs of the streets of Hanoi from 6 pm to 6 am the next morning in many years. These colour photographs shows another look of Hanoi at night time. Hanoi at night is a different city where the urban side of it changes the colour completely.

Dao Viet Dzung’s family started to make miniature bicycles out of steel wire and scrap metal in 2001 when Dzung was in high school. Dzung hand painted them and traveled from his village and sold them on the streets of Hanoi.
Success breeds imitation and eventually too many copiers destroyed the market.
Since 2006 Dzung has made a series of bikes for the Bookworm every two years and now they have started to become collector’s items.
Dzung hopes that you enjoy series 2012 as much as he enjoyed painting them.
Bookworm does not charge artists rent or commission.

Year after year – The Christmas concert of the Goethe-Institut brings again Christmas to Hanoi and for the first time also to Haiphong. After an exciting year with a lot of cultural events, new German students and graduates Christmas is just around the corner. The Goethe-Institut invites kindly to celebrate the end of the year with compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, Telemann, Mozart et al. in a tranquil atmosphere at the courtyard of the Institute.
Again under the direction of Graham Sutcliffe singers of the International Choir and young musicians from Hanoi attune the audience for the Christmas days. Goethe-Institut Vietnam proudly presents FOTOS on tour in South-East Asia. The popular German Pop-/Rock-Band FOTOS from the city of Hamburg shall play two concerts in Hanoi and one in Haiphong before heading to Bangkok. A workshop and a third concert will follow in Thailand. The FOTOS will play gigs from their latest album “Porzellan” and more recent hits.
The tour is jointly organized by Goethe-Institut and Hanoi Youth Theatre. By inviting the FOTOS a popular German band Hanoi and Haiphong students – especially those who are part of the PASCH partner school program – shall experience the latest rocking German tunes – all live!
Pop music made in Germany is divers , internationally acclaimed and most successful since the 1980ies. If Electronic-Music or Rap, Rock or Pop: Bands like Kraftwerk, Scorpions, Tote Hosen, Tokio Hotel and last but not least FOTOS mesmerize huge crowds. Popular tunes and German language made Falco´s “Amadeus” or Nena´s “99 Luftballons” mega hits on an international scale.
The FOTOS are four smart musicians: Thomas Hessler (Vocal, Guitar), Deniz Erarslan (Guitar), Friedrich Weiss (Bass) and Benedikt Schnermann (Drums).
Bassist Friedrich describes founding the band like this: “These four boys got randomly together and just matched really well on a musical and on a personal level.”
Their style of music is individual and not easy to put a label on. In their own way the band is mixing Indie-Rock/Pop, with German Rock and Electronic Sounds.
The FOTOS perform since 2005 and have released three albums so far. The FOTOS have been successful in Germany, England, India, Indonesia and Mexico. They played festivals in Austria, China and Kazakhstan.
